Thank you for this. My Arms, Your Hearse is my one of my favorite albums of all time. Such an underrated masterpiece. This and Morningrise are Opeth at their best.
Youre pretty close. "When" is implied to be his wake. Where he sees all kinds of men surrounding her and talking to her, laughing. He gets jealous and hurt he believes that she either never loved him or got over him really quick. The next 2 songs are him haunting her, and she feels him and is meserable. Demon of the fall he finally shows himself to her. And scares her away. He then realizes what hes been doing to her moves on.
Theres more to it, but i dont want to type a novel.

Always thought of this album as being separated from friends or your lover and being on differing paths for some time, then finally coming back together but realising you have drifted so far apart that you have no other choice but to leave again. The love still might be there, but its more of a feeling of nostalgia and things wont be like they used to be before.

"When" was my first Opeth song. Scared the shit out of me. Very interesting story behind the album though.

Blackwater Park is one of those turning point albums for me; first Opeth album I ever heard, first time I realized how nuanced death metal could really be, and it forever changed my tastes and willingness to explore more metal genres. That all being said, when I found My Arms Your Hearse, it was immediately my favorite Opeth album. The circular nature of the lyrics I always really liked, and Demon of the Fall is a song that is just impossible to listen to and not physically move somehow. So damn good!

Blackwater Park is also one of my favorites!

I had a similar experience. I only listened to Blackwater Park because it was produced by Steven Wilson and I was a massive Porcupine Tree fan from their beginning in the early 90’s. Blackwater Park showed me how much depth there could be in an extreme metal album. I had previously disliked the death metal growl but Mikael Åkerfelt converted me. I bet there were a bunch of people like me.

This album was my introduction to Opeth, and the first time I was utterly confused. You’ve inspired me to give it another try! Thanks ☺️

Damn I didn't know this, so cool. I wake up, listen to when, drive to work, listen to when, drive around at work, listen to when, drive on home and listen to when, then get home and listen to when. Thought the song was about loneliness but the actual meaning is still just as cool

Purchased this album around a week after its Release. It’s EPIC and Beautiful. Nostalgia Rich and it reminds Me of A lot of Heart Break. Mikael is one of my Vocal inspirations along with early Gorefest(False) and Edge of Sanity. Thank You.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve always headcanoned that in the “Opeth-verse,” ghosts stuck in the physical world can’t interact for multiple reasons. How can one speak if one doesn’t interact with the air, after all? Just imagine how disturbing that would be.

Great work on My Arms Your Hearse and Still Life videos! I think I've read somewhere that Ghost Reveries is a concept album too so I hope we see that
    covered as well ^^

    • @aegon1807
      @aegon1807 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, ghost reveries also is a concept album about a man who is trying to escape of demon's prison. In "Reveries/Harlequin Forest" he got into a forest but in the end he got catched again. Sorry for my grammer mistakes.

I once heard that Mikael has been cheated on by his gf shortly before he wrote this album, may have been with his good friend not sure, so that was the inspiration apparently.

Yay I'm indeed new here. And if I'm not mistaken, it's pronounced miiikaeeell, with the L rolling, I've seen one of the behind the scenes of Opeth making the album's, and At a time someone called him like that in swedish, so...Awesome video, love opeth

This album is awesome and I hadn’t realize the story behind it, but I was sure it was that good.
Is there any chance to put small pieces of the songs in each main part you just explained? So we can compare the meaning and the lyrics
