    I've been to Little Italys all over the country. North Beach may be only ranked as the 5th best Little Italy in the U.S. But it is my favorite because it is the only one that makes me feel like I am in Europe due to the architecture. All of the other Little Italys look and feel just like what they are....Italian neighborhoods in the U.S.

    Lived in NB most of my life. Got stuck in quarantine elsewhere. This is killing me . I can't wait to get back . For many years I ran a snack shop for the children at the school by the Parish. We always made them pizza bread. A little cheese on top and popped it in the oven. I am so hungry to be back in NB. Toney's is one of the best also . The meatballs are to die for!!! Great video! But we don't call it "Little Italy" here, we call it North Beach.

    • @ZeeneInRealLife
      @ZeeneInRealLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Hi David! Thanks for the feedback 😊 For sure the locals don't use (or rarely use) the "Little Italy" moniker; for out-of-towners, though, "Little Italy" more easily identifies the prominent flavor of this neighborhood. Also, North Beach extends up to Fisherman's Wharf and out to The Embarcadero and to keep things clean I limited my scope to the smaller, more Italian-focused community within North Beach along Washington Square and Columbus and the video title is intended to reflect that. But to minimize confusion, I"ll append the title to include North Beach. Thanks for keeping me honest! 👍

      @@ZeeneInRealLife I appreciate the video and the neighborhood/cultural representation and I don't mean to bash you, but just because it makes it more easily identifiable does not in any way make it called that. You just came up with a name and decided it was easier/better. Lightweight offensive and dismissive to the history and culture of the area. You wouldn't go to The Mission district and tell people it was called Mini Mexico or some such thing.

    • @ZeeneInRealLife
      @ZeeneInRealLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@stephengribble5997 Hi Stephen, thanks for the comment. I actually didn’t make up “Little Italy” for this neighborhood. It’s been referred to as such for some time in an unofficial capacity (you will see it referenced this way when walking around there as well as historical & tourist materials that will turn up with a quick Google search). North Beach itself is quite extensive and encompasses many other micro-neighborhoods like Fisherman’s Wharf and Telegraph Hill. For purposes of this video I’m only covering the actual area around Washington Park that is unofficially dubbed this. It’s confusing for locals as most people just refer to it as “North Beach” but then conversely it’s not as precise for the tourists.

    • @cenkuygur8045
      @cenkuygur8045 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@stephengribble5997 Are you serious? North Beach has always been considered Little Italy, and it's not offensive. The Mission District has a very diverse ethnic history with just not Mexican's. It wasn't until the 40's that a big Mexican Population moved in. Also, The Mission District has a huge Central American population, since the 80's. But, the Mission District is known for great Mexican Food. Or is that not PC to say? You're awesome Zeene InRealLife. Don't listen to these professional complainers.

    great video! I'll be back this March from the 15th to the 24th. Last year I checked out Molinari and took my sandwich to eat at the Golden Gate Bridge. Kinda sad seeing a recent news vid about some restaurants along Columbus closed up now because of the rent. in previous years I've gone to Tony's Pizza on Stockton and a gelato place around the corner. Btw, in Tales of the City a character mentions a favorite cock tail lunch spot with compari. :)

    • @ZeeneInRealLife
      @ZeeneInRealLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree the rents are a real problem (in Chinatown as well). Don't know if you're familiar with the Golden Gate cookie factory but their rent has gone up 500% in the last few years. :( There was a recent article about them (in I think the Chronicle) that the owner is holding on by a thread financially.

    • @ZeeneInRealLife
      @ZeeneInRealLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been to Stinking Rose but sadly it's gotten really touristy which takes away from the experience somewhat. If you decide to go, get the bagna caulda which is a ton load of garlic that is oven roasted in olive oil and butter. It's soft and sweet and you don't realize how badly you stink of garlic until you are done and realize it's coming out of your pores! 😅 But oh so delicious!

      Extremely few Italians are left there. My family used to be one of them. My grandpa had a hair salon on Union and Colombus right across from the park that he ran for 62 years until he passed away. I believe it's an Italian grocery store now.

     @Zeene InRealLife Tourist mags that also call highway 1 PCH (it's not called that) among other mistakes. SF does not call this "Little Italy". It's such a generic tourist name. North Beach is what it's called and it is a unique neighborhood with amazing history from Italians to beatniks to west coast jazz. It's one thing to say "this is North Beach a unique neighborhood that is also SF's version of 'Little Italy'" i.e. an italian neighborhood. but Please stop saying "Little Italy" like that is the name of the neighborhood. edit: I'll add I like your videos, they are great, and you seem super likable and pleasant. don't want to sound like I'm being mean.

    • @ZeeneInRealLife

      Hello, I usually do street parking. If it’s early enough in the day, there is plenty around Washington Square (check near the Joe DiMaggio playground or around Union/Powell). If you want to be 100% sure to get something and don’t mind paying a bit more, use SpotHero or one of the other parking apps to secure a parking garage ahead of time.

      Love the people working at Molinari's too! Yes, for sure locals know it as North Beach and I've had a few heated discussions with other locals about this. 😂 However, this particular area of North Beach has for a long time been known informally as "Little Italy" and since most of my viewers (well, at least prior to covid) were tourists, it was the best way to capture the spirit of the neighborhood.
