Big Picture: Germany Today
"Germany Today" to be shown on Army TV series -- This is the story of a people desolate in defeat, who found the way back with the help of the military force that defeated them. This is the story of the role played by the United States Army in the rebirth of West Germany. "Germany Today," as seen through the eyes of "THE BIG PICTURE" camera, is an outstanding documentary of a vast reconstruction job. A cycle has come full turn. The Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces which helped defeat Germany is hailed now by free Germans as friend and protector. No other force in military history has done so much to put a conquered nation back on its feet as the United States Army. Because the U.S. Army has been a bulwark, West Germany remains democratic -- a front line for this nation's security. As the film concludes, the narrator says, "We do not know what future dangers may arise in Germany, but the United States Army is on guard and will be ready. The ringing of West Germany's Freedom Bell echoes in all free lands. It calls for eternal vigilance. It calls for readiness to defend freedom with all the power at our command."
I was sent to West Germany twice TDY in the mid 1980s. I was serving in USAF at the time . Loved the country and the people. Oh, And the food and beer too. 😀❤🥨🌭🍺🪖🪗✝
I was stationed in Augsburg from 64 till 67 in the us army,what a nice country with really nice people.

That being said, part of the Marshall plan money was used for loans to companies, which helped a lot. The U.S. really were exceptionally benevolent victors and managed to turn a bitter foe into a dependable ally within less than two decades.

I have much family still living on my family's provincial lands. We lost many during the firebombing of cities like Dresden. They still recall that necessary act of demoralization.
My point is: life in occupied Germany was not as peachy as this interesting propaganda film.
My relatives in Germany are, for the most part, grateful for allied aid. But look at Der Motterland now... It's a pain to know what has happened, in an unspeakable way.

I never knew these films existed, I'm sure they never aired on regular TV networks else I would have seen them. Like so many other historical footage on TH-cam, no date(s) of production are provided, which drives viewers like me NUTS! Allow me to issue a plea to all TH-camrs: Please try to give a date of production on these films...please? Thank you.
It became beautiful in a few years and returned to its former glory. I can't imagine what would have become of their historic cities and families under Hitler. East Germany was so sad and backward under Russia for many years, until Reagan and Gorbachev took down the wall! Families were reunited again after many years.
When the Germanies reunited, someone posited that bringing East Germany up to western standards would take 200,000,000 marks. I laughed and said, "Try two trillion." I was right. Though this was cheaper than gaining that land via a war, of course. And much less bloody.

It's called being generous.
The film is sometimes a bit patronizing and tends to exaggerate the american role in the 'Wirtschaftswunder' - Marshall plan aid came mostly in the form of american foodstuff and consumer goods and was also substantially less than in France and Britain. And in stark contrast to any efforts to rebuild the german industry, the Allies actually dismantled parts of the industry and capped output until '51 - e.g. steel production had to remain under 25%, car production under 10% of pre war levels.
That's what comes from being the aggressor nation of all Europe. Precautions had to be in place, until Germans proved themselves as peaceful.
As we can compare the outcome after US occupation and sovjet occupation, I have to say that the US stance vis-à-vis Germany was more than fair.
Its ironic that WWII started because Germany invaded Poland and then for 45 years after the war the Soviets occupied much of eastern Europe. And remember Canada, New Zealand, Austrailia etc as part of the British Commonwealth were involved as well.

Stalin engineered WW2 by signing a pact with Hitler to invade Poland knowing it would draw in France that had a bigger army and he thought Germany would be defeated so he could walk over a weakened Germany in his prelude to communising Europe. We know his plans went slightly wrong but at least the German resistance meant he only got half of Europe

@@alpspitz1 Stalin was not capable of seeing that far ahead. He knew enough to understand that war was in the offing and not much more. The British and French might come through Estonia, Lat and Luth and Finland or Germany through Poland. In return for 1/2 of Poland Hitler would not oppose him sizing Estonia, Lat, Lith and Finland. He didn't get very far in Finland.
When Germany crossed beyond its agreed upon border. Kruschev said Stalin couldn't believe it. For a few days he did nothing saying it must be a mistake. At one point he had the whole government packed up on a train to head east and abandon the capital. At the last minute he decided to stay and fight. They had to keep him out of military decisions because he didn't know what he was doing. Eventually he was convinced to let Marshall Zhukov run the war.

The Marshall plan allowed the Americans to steal money from the British to supply arms. Thee was no humanitarian gesture involved just a greed for money!!

that is so true. i was watching a documentary on that. the name of it is "Eisenhower Death Camps". He love germans?! If the Soviets had folded, Europe would have been overrun by the Nazis and the Thousand Year Reich would have been a reality. As much of a pain as the Russians are today, I do not deny their critical and blood-filled contributions.

The German people are certainly thankful for the help rendered during the Berlin blockade and will never forget this, but the US contribution to rebuilding this country was rather minimal, if not non-existant. It was the German people with their endurance and hard labor bringing this country up again, while at the same time paying billions of Deutschmarks to the US to cover the cost of the occupation. In fact, Germany is still paying to this date!
In the early 1950´s, the federal government was at the brink of having to declare bankrupcy, as these payments exceeded 49% of the budget!

It's important to remember that following WWII, Germany was utterly defeated and on her knees; Germany's future rested solely on Allied graciousness and generosity.
It's also important to note that the US forgave much German debt, and made repayment terms much easier for Germany in the 1953 London agreement. The total under negotiation was 16 billion marks of debt resulting from the Treaty of Versailles after World War I which had not been paid in the 1930s, but which Germany decided to repay to restore its reputation. This money was owed to government and private banks in the U.S., France and Britain. Another 16 billion marks represented postwar loans by the U.S.
Under the London Debts Agreement of 1953, the repayable amount was reduced by 50% to about 15 billion marks and stretched out over 30 years, and compared to the fast-growing German economy were of minor impact.
An important term of the agreement was that repayments were only due while West Germany ran a trade surplus, and that repayments were limited to 3% of export earnings. This gave Germany’s creditors a powerful incentive to import German goods, assisting reconstruction.
The agreement significantly contributed to the growth of the post-war German economy and reemergence of Germany as a world economic power. It allowed Germany to enter international economic institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Trade Organization.
What would Germany, and Europe, be like today if America had not chosen to rehabilitate, resuscitate and revitalize their former enemy (the first time in history that a victor chose to rebuild their former enemy), but had instead (in collaboration with the Soviets) chose to implement a policy far harsher than the Morgenthau plan, and snuffed out Germany as a culture, language and a people, much like the Romans had done to Carthage. What would the Europe and the world of this alternate timeline look like today?

Germany is still under American occupation, there are still 21 US military bases in Germany, some with nukes... an untold miilitary occupation.
This is still valuable because of this: The US has become so US-centric, it is vital that a segment of our population be exposed to other nations and governments and cultures, so as to bring this knowledge back to us. NO ONE in Germany, e.g., risks bankruptcy because of a medical crisis. Cf. the US.

That doesn't include the insane frenzy of "souvenir collecting" by the foot soldiers that eventually had to be restrained, private homes were being broken in and emptied of all valuables at the point of a gun.
Then, the US occupation intentionally starved the population even prohibiting the Red Cross from delivering much needed food relief packages and sending all coal production to France, leading many locals to freeze to death during the terrible winters of 45 and 46.
And then came the infamous Basic Law and its unknown clauses, still ruling Germany today because after the reunification, its promised replacement by a real constitution was refused under the pretext that it was not necessary and let's not forget the refusal to repeal UN articles 53 and 107, the enemy state clauses.
Then the forced inclusion in NATO, the imposed nukes, the Marshall Plan, the economic enslavement, the fictitious evacuation of "The Three Powers" and the just as fictitious return of sovereignty in 1993, the bribes to the democrats, the purchase of some communists, the cold war lie, Gladio, the CIA and other secret organizations that oversee over all German media and politics through the RIAS, Atlantikbrücke e.V., Checkpoint Charlie Stiftung, the Office for German-American cooperation, the Aspen Institute, DRÄGER Stiftung and all those "collaboration" NGOs that are in reality surveillance and control organizations said to be operational until 2099 and you think it's a good foreign exposure and learning opportunity for your fellow citizens? Really?
Well, let me tell you a secret, the only thing you could possibly learn from the bloody US is death and destruction under the pretext of freedom and democracy.
