gisforgary sams. People down here sound brain washed and when you say something about the work being bad people are ready to fight. It’s that protection. They are so proud of him for being self made and employing black actors which is great but there’s no accountability for him to better his work.
Straight trash! The horrible weaves/wigs, pregnant pauses in the dialogue, repetitive dialog, the never ending background music. I can't support this garbage
The reason Tyler writes everything himself is so that he doesn’t have to adhere to union rules with a writers room. He’s known for underpaying people. I have to find the link to the article so I’ll be back.

@smkep Yes. I agree and I remember that exchange between the two. I thought that it was just me that felt the same about his movies, but Spike Lee’s commentary was quite accurate. I’m glad that they made up though.
Tyler Perry: "I wrote all these in 2019" 80% of people: "I wish i had that kind of work ethic" Any writer ever: "All those in a year? They must be garbage"
Right. There's just no way to put out that many scripts and for them to be good. I thought that was a pile of scripts he had written over a period of years. He said he wrote all of that in 2019. It's crazy that he sees that as a good thing. It means that one, you're a quantity over quality guy and two you're a psycho workaholic and have no balance to your life whatsoever. I'm not envying any of that.
@@marylandgirl9246 Exactly. And at the end of his clip he goes "work ethic!" as if he has a good amount. No. Pumping out trash script after trash script in a short amount of time does not qualify as good work ethic. In fact, it's the opposite. Clearly, he's not putting much thought or effort into a single piece which is why he's able to create so much
Right? I've been working on a novel and I've been at it for almost a year. ONE book and I'm constantly reworking it and editing it and trying to make sure it actually makes sense. I know it's not a script, but at the same time, if you can do all that writing in a year, keeping multiple plots going, it makes me seriously question the quality of it.
yes it's mediocre content, and that's what bothers me because I feel like with all of his money and with all of his influence that he can write so much better!! like I'm rooting for him I have no galler hatred towards him at all I just feel like his stuff needs to be so much better!!
I’ve worked there! I refuse to go back. The only thing “Mr. Perry” cares about is “Mr. Perry”. His goal is pushing out tons of product ( shows) as fast as he can for the least amount of money. This in turn keeps his crew members from making a healthy amount of money. He films entire seasons of His TV shows in 3 weeks and the Movies in a weeks (6 days) time. Meanwhile he cash’s in the same amount of money as if he shot the show over the typical amount of time it takes to shoot them ( 3 months for movies and 6-7 months for TV). In the meantime while you are there working, you are in constant fear of being fired for the most ridiculous of reasons. I’ve worked in this industry for 13 years now and was never more stressed, overworked and undervalued as I was working at TPS. I’m black and that should say something. 🤦🏽♂️
The business is likely still a start-up with lots of debt and inadequate financing partners and so it still needs to prove itself to more flushed investors. Cashflow is king. Just my speculation though.
"I'm no longer impressed by people who work all the time. Just making a lot of stuff is not it. What are you making? What's the degree of difficulty?" YESSSS. So poignant. For music as well.
Agency in Repose that’s a really good point. I hadn’t considered that. I can respect what he’s done to change the status quo. But why continue to create subpar things after the fact? He clearly has an audience now and the funding and means to work with other talented people and make something exceptional. A lot of the mistakes he makes feel lazy or amateur for someone as successful as he is in the industry. I do stand by that criticism for other creators who haven’t as much cultural impact though, like artists that crank out soulless music someone else has written for them just to chart or make money
He basically is surviving on perpetuating the stereotype of us being sad, angry, no man needing, drug affected, workaholic...... I have yet to see a beautiful well adjusted woman in his movies, shows, plays. That's just my opinion.

Era/classic means timeless. He is not. We are slowly moving on from those plays and he knows that. Why do you think he's saturating the industry with mediocrity?🤷🏾♀️
Let's be real: Tyler's success has everything to do with his pandering and perpetuation of negative stereotypes of black people. We have to ask the difficult question, had he been more willing to feature a different demonstration of blacks in his productions, would he be enjoying this level of success? Does he not exploit our plight in his productions , but dress them up fancy and repackage them, appealing to our deepest desires and hopes as a people (wealth, materialism)...just a rant...
Weird One Yes but now he is rich enough where he can start funding more indie films, more nice films with nuanced stories, he doesn’t have to keep doing the same movies and perpetuating the same stereotypes.
They don’t think they’re just movies. I lived with white southern girls who actually saw the plays. Their grandmas did too. One of them was shocked when I told her why I didn’t watch them. She said, “I just thought he did a good job of showing what black folk are like in the south. Especially Madea.” I had nothing else to say after that.
@@rra7490 thing is, he will. Keeping the same three profiles he has for every African-American/Black Women and Men. Look at all his plays and movies. There are like three or four different type of women characters he showcases and about three different type of male characters he portrays.

Roxanne Golden he doesn’t have characters in his movies only caricatures. He’s making a lot of money but he’ll never get my money because his movies are derivative.
“Bruh” is my exact reaction to him writing all his scripts. It makes no damn sense that he’s being doing the same shit for 20 years. Unfortunately as long as the aunties keep watching that trash he’ll keep creating it
Tyler Perry has an ego as big as his head and he gives me a ‘stingy’ vibe. I’m happy for his success and enjoy some of his work, but a lot of his movies and shows show women in a bad light. They’re either abused, being cheated on, crazy, or ghetto-acting. And the fact he brags about filming a movie in 5 days show us he just doesn’t gaf, he’s all about the all mighty dollar. And best believe, Madea will be back I’ll give it a year. He should take notes with James Cameron, Spike Lee, and Stephen Spielberg, their work take years between movies but the quality is amazing when it comes out.
...and don’t forget, then by the end of the movie those women are punished by life or God or other people for being so mean or crazy. Oh yeah and even when they’re abused it’s their fault for not leaving (when a character said that out loud in his version of FCG my jaw dropped)
He could hire several writers. He has multiple shows. So many characters. So much that can be covered. I hope he can release his hold on this aspect of his business in 2020.
YEARS ago when Tyler Perry's movies first arrived on the scene I was excited and my exact thoughts were, "He has a lot of potential." My excitement over the years eroded into confusion, disappointment, and finally collapsed from exhaustion and rotted away into indifference. Not. One. Single. Bit. Of. Improvement. It's actually astonishing.
Beyoncé’s Coachella project was so moving because of the fact that she collaborated with so many talented people. We are not an island as humans. We need the input and insights from others to make everything in this life work. Tyler Perry needs to take a page out of Beyoncé’s book! Beautiful commentary as usual, Kim.
Sabrina Mobley not only just collaboration, but bringing people up and people with you especially those that are not usually lifted up and granted opportunities
Yes she kept acknowledging how much she LEARNED from everyone who was involved in that performance and I see that mentality in a lot of her behind the scenes stuff.
“Why build your own table when you’re gonna be the only person sitting at it.” So true. Exclusion of other black creatives (especially the black women contributors he so desperately needs) should not be portrayed as a personal triumph.
I actually appreciate him telling us so now we can understand why almost all his characters on all his shows are underdeveloped and the women roles make no sense 🤷🏾♀️.
What I'm really sick of is that if you criticize the quality of Tyler Perry's work, a significant number of people will fire back and accuse you of "classism".... as if his work is somehow fully 100% representative of working class black people or their tastes... and yes to that point about workaholics! Tired of humble braggers trying to shame ordinary people for not breaking their backs enough when most people are just working normal jobs and trying to survive.
@@lepetitangesf I'm not shaming anyone for liking Tyler Perry, I'm just saying that criticizing Tyler Perry's work does not mean you're a classist, it just means that you don't like his work. I thought Kim explained her criticism of him fairly well in this video, might wanna give it a watch.
"You need some help, the TV shows and movies are horrible!" I'm glad i'm not the only one. The only Tyler Perry movie I enjoyed was Daddy's Little Girls.
For years we’ve been wondering why there aren’t more black writers in hollywood and now we know it’s because the most successful one refuses to make more seats at the table

If that’s terrible I’ll take it, she’s sitting in her little room talking about it and meanwhile he’s sitting on over 600,000,000 dollars.... think about that. All his work isn’t amazing, but to say he’s terrible is.... not completely true.
@@jay_baby_lacy3911 That's my opinion. In my opinion his work is terrible. I never downplayed his success but that still doesn't change the fact that his work sucks.
Gugu Hlatshwayo Well that’s fine I think money speaks louder than words🤷🏾♀️ and I just thought terrible was an extreme word to use, but all to its own.
"What's wrong with coming together with people who are just as creative and brilliant as you are?" Lol that would involve him thinking there are people that are creative and brilliant as he is.
As a black female writer, this makes me SO angry. Because he’s someone who needs a writers room. Specifically, he needs black female writers in the room who can actually give the shows that extra effort. He has all of the power and resources to put black women in spaces that we typically aren’t. And he just...won’t. His ego is so big and what’s he got to show for it? Terrible dialogue and misogyny. Edit: Okay you definitely said this in the video already 😅 But still! He’s full of shit.
Ok but people shouldn’t be telling what others have to do on their business He fought his way up and he’s proud of the work he does and the success he receives specially doing all on his own. He’s an example that black people can make it too. His shows are acc good, no matter how much y’all hate him or wtever, he acc represents black culture and his work is filled with meaning.

"If you get rich off the backs of a group you don't belong to, you have some added responsibilities." Powerful truth right there. This video is so quotable.
He could easily create an all black female writing room to take his genre to the next level and give a come up to black women. Quality, character and relevance are necessary from this point out. But in terms of hoarding, you make a really great point. We are constantly told there's very few opportunities in Hollywood for black centric projects and the few black people with power in the arena hold them close but I think we have to get past that point and as viewers be more vocal about what we expect from the people "At the table". More content like this please!!!!
last days if he does that he’d go down in history. Not only would he give jobs to actors and actresses but he’d give opportunity to black CREATIVES and that is the major key. I think he’s who people men when they say that there are gate keepers and blacks who aim to keep the next down.
last days well it should be the best person for the job. If we give a certain group a pass that’s just another way of debilitating people because they will rely on the gesture and consideration of others. No you must empower people.
I'm so glad to hear you call out workaholism. I stopped being impressed years ago when I noticed that many workaholics just didn't want to go home. I don't know what was waiting for them there (problems with the spouse & kids, or an empty house, or a stack of unpaid bills, etc.), but it was clear they were at work to escape the rest of their life.
Quality > quantity I’ve known for years that he writes all his own stuff. And it shows. The dialogue of his shows is so vapid and basic. You can hear the writers block in the dialogue. I do think his plays and some of his earlier films were much better quality, but he’s been out of his depth for years now.
You know what I’ve noticed NONE of his employees (actors) say in their interviews “Tyler is an AMAZING writer” and there’s a reason. They only say he’s a great business man or a hard worker.
I’m actually embarrassed and surprised that he made that video, no one at his “level “feels the need to make a video like that, it speaks volumes about where he actually feels he stacks in this industry.
This is also a big middle finger to all struggling writers, especially BLACK struggling writers when the window for success in the industry is already as small as it is. He really shot himself in the foot because even though he's set himself up as an example, he lowkey shut the door behind him by not giving those he's preaching to even a smidgen of his mass amount of resources that could go to young black creatives with real voices
Ninjarabbit yup, like I said before what was even the purpose of building a studio if you going to be the only person creating the content 😑; it’s so crazy to me that folks like Jordan peele, Ava, Daniel Washington, etc are taking first look deals for there production companies at studios like universal or paramount when Perry studio is right there 🤦🏾♀️; something tells me that tyler wants to be the only creative and voice that gets recognized with his work 😒 even though he desperately needs the help.

@@olive6679 tyler is a deeply disturb man because he was molested by both men and women he said so himself. That why his movies always portray both black man and women in that way
@@olive6679 This is best shown in The Family That Preys; the daughter who went away and got educated and got a good cooperate job happens to be disrespectful to her mom, cheating, and greedy, so, of course, she had to get knocked down a peg, while her mother who pretty much gave up her life to have a family ends up rich and happy. The guy she was cheating with, his wife, who also did the stay at home mom thing, also ends up in a good place. Like, if that isn't a message of who is "good" and who is "bad", I don't know what does. And he does this over and over, too. Acrimony also did this. That character went to school and would have been successful, but she had a "mental illness" (and the way he wrote that shows he knows nothing about it, lol) and shacked up with some dude who sold her a bunch of false dreams and made her lose her house. Yet, he still ended up coming off as the good guy (by selling some old ass tech, lol) in the end? It was too much.
So many of those Madea movies burnt people out. Madea does this, Madea goes here, Madea's this and that. It became so repetitive. It reminded of the Earnest movies when I was a kid. Earnest goes to camp, Earnest get a Job, Earnest in space.
Which wouldn't have been terrible if he used it for funding to be better. But no, just churn out cheap product for the most cash. I'm sure it will keep him rich, but what will the value be in 10-20 years?
not to mention his work improving, but he'd also give a lot of other black writers an opportunity to get credit and improve their craft, and get into the business!

Unfortunately....since his works allowed him to open Tyler Perry Studios....he is VERY impressed by his work. Who is near him to tell him "you can do better"???
@Akeise Sample song writing and writing narrative scripts are different though. In a way you can say music represents an artist (even uf they bring in a sing writer...which isn't the sin people portray it as) but Tyler represents a "brand". So if TP produces multiple cheaply made works with all black faces, while he may be community supported by his audience, the perception outside of it is a degraded value of black performance and production as a whole. TP doesn't just affect TP. He isn't singing a song and that being seen as his character. He is creating portrayals of black community and since most people do not easily separate performers from performance, his writung comingvout of the mouths of black performers extends to a black culture world view that is much wider then a singer singing their own song. So not comparable.
Tyler: I ain't got a writer's room...Work ethic. Kim: SIR! You need some help! 🤣🤣🤣 I've been complaining about the lack of growth for years. Like, bruh why are you not getting better? There should be some evidence of insight and craft development. 🤦🏾♀️
Whew! The type of analysis I’ve been yearning for on the essence of Tyler Perry and what he does to and for the culture! I am oh so tired of people mistaking the critique of his “art” with an attack on him in totality. TP is not immune to criticism despite his appreciated efforts to help Black actors gain employment and his philanthropy. I actually have to wonder if offering opportunities to these Black actors somewhat hinders their career when other film professionals check their previous work to see the undeveloped, basic, and two dimensional pieces they’ve been forced to perform. Anyways, you said a meaningful mouthful and made one of the best summaries of how TP effects the community, thank you!

80% of people: "I wish i had that kind of work ethic"
Any writer ever: "All those in a year?

Weird One Yes but now he is rich enough where he can start funding more indie films, more nice films with nuanced stories, he doesn’t have to keep doing the same

Tyler Perry has an ego as big as his head and he gives me a ‘stingy’ vibe. I’m happy for his success and enjoy some of his work, but a lot of his movies and shows show women in a bad light.
I felt the same way. I was telling my self, "Now, I know why they all sound and look the same." Ugh
Tyler: I ain't got a writer's room...Work ethic.
Kim: SIR! You need some help!
🤣🤣🤣
I've been complaining about the lack of growth for years.
