Alan Watts - Acceptance of Death and Meaning of Life

  • We have a culture to live life as if to survive and to hush the idea of death, to avoid this topic of discussion. Alan Watts explores this taboo with a different approach, that death and life are like fronts and backs of the same coin. Death gives meaning to life and gives us the opportunity to understand what life is all about

a lot of people compare the experience of psychedelics to be very similar to being a child again, you gain that childlike wonder back.

It's a weird thing life, beautiful. I am 17 and learning more and more about the journey. When my dad passed away last year, i had a sense on why we are here...To be and to create love. Within 5 minutes of my dad passing away i felt a powerful sense of what i can only describe as being love reach inside of me. I stopped crying, and just felt peaceful with this buzz inside my chest. I am so grateful to my higher power for feeling that, so grateful to my dad too. Its made me feel more understanding on the process of life. That one moment, impacted me so much.

My dad passed away a year ago, and i can say i felt exactly the same way you described it, he passed away from cancer, and his last couple hours where he was in a state of brain-death, and when he took his final last couple of breaths, i stopped crying and realized that that was his chapter in life, which touched me in a way that, i realized i have to love and embrace all the moments i have with anything and everyone on my journey... A year later since the last reply, i hope matsterness somehow remembers he made a comment on this video with his story, i hope to hear from you, and if not, have a peaceful life, to you, and everyone else reading this comment.

Without life there cannot be death, and without death there cannot be life. The point that modern society completely misunderstands is that it is not how you die that is important at all, it is how you lived. So the ultimate consequence of birth, is death, and this transition alone is The Journey of Purpose

Talhah Khan that’s never gonna happen because that’s not living...you can not have existence without non existence just as you can’t have an up without a down or cold without hot. It’s all a balance from the universe and we are all made up of energy from the universe that’s the real you. You are just experiencing life in a physical form that is not the real you. And that’s the problem us humans have. We have hidden from the fact that our physical body is not the real me or you. We are all one massive ball of energy.

Meaning that of course there's pain occasionally in life, but it is the mental suffering that does not need to be there. Which can make the original suffering greater.
"I've experienced a great deal of pain and suffering in my life .... most of which has never happened." ~ Mark Twain

The past few days have been drowning in thoughts of death. Why it happens, how it happens and how it feels when it happens. Some days those thoughts would feel so real that I would snap out of them panting, trying to grab my breath. What I then realised was that what I'm really afraid of, is not just death but that everything has come to an end. Listening to Alan Watts has put my fears of death to rest. I am no longer afraid

I've had one perdiod like this in my life and i was 7.
I'm going through this at 28 and i just can't sleep at night because it feels like dying in some way.
The irony is, I've got "Memento mori " (be mindful of death") tattooed on my arm. I am aware pf death, and that's why i'm scared.
Most people don't think about it,they just enjoy the journey, they will sometime think about it when someone dies and that's it, back to normal. I'd like to be like them lol

I’m not afraid of death, in fact, I embrace and laugh about it even. I gives me peace that all of this will one day fade, so all I have to do is enjoy the ride.

The part with the bomb hits me hard every time. I was in a bad motorcycle wreck at 160 mph and flew around 180 feet. Felt like ages, first terrified but after a while i felt this feeling that everything is ok and will be fine. Like being comforted and i felt no fear, just love. 1000 of thoughts went through my mind and i saw my relatives and family vividly. I am an atheist but this is really what alan is talking about. I dont fear death, ride faster and harder then ever before.

This resonates with me in an odd way. I OD'd some months ago and now i realize why and how i changed. I don't cry because of redundant things in the past and I don't worry about the future. Seeing death can really fix your point of view in life. If you realize that you could die at any moment and you are okay with that then one day you wake up and it feels like the world has new life and that weight that you carried for so long has faded and you finally understand that every day is the best day of your life.

OMG finally someone who doesn't make me wrong for not wanting to live forever and not being afraid to die. I don't have to be depressed to know that there's no point in living on forever, and that in fact we NEVER GET ANYWHERE like we're always told to get someplace in life. We live INSIDE A BALL, meaning we only can go in circles anyway, which can be fun for a while but I just get bored easily and I really don't think I'm missing out on anything when I leave the human body form... Maybe its due to the fact that I almost died as an infant, I was blue in the face when my mom shook me and I started breathing again - maybe I saw something there that reminded me of my undying nature so I never felt quite home here, but always as a nomad, or visitor, who's kinda homesick by now....

I once thought that a truck on the tracks was a train. It was winter and it was too late for me to stop my car by the time I saw what I though was a train, so I just kept going. Obviously nothing happened but in the moment that I thought that it was all over for me at the age of 19 I had completely accepted that there was nothing I could do and I wasn't scared at all and I was just at such peace with everything. I'm absolutely terrified of dying but when I thought that was it, I felt 100% at peace. Crazy how your mind works.

Well i think that´s because we are all and mostly conditioned in life to link almost all achievements and sources of joy with certain conditions or efforts, as to say "nothing in this life is for free!"..so we learn to react and live in this patterns..we have to do this, to deserve that..and so one..and that´s a neverending vicious circle, which prevents us from being free at all and creates the illusion that we have to "handle" and "control" life, so actually we never feel free, as long we think we really are able to control things or particular goals..and in contemplation of death we finally realize that we merely cannot control things and therefore we are able to let it go, deeply accept and feel the true core of life, which gives us peace and freedom of fear..

Acceptance of morality makes me live in a more vital way. That’s just the way it is. I think when you are young you don’t think about it. Now as you get older, you take this on board and your life becomes more valuable!!😅😘❤️

People will not have any joy in living forever unless they can understand these and similar insights. The same way people can't enjoy our current short lives.
So I'm looking forward to marvel at endless ways "nature is" in universe. With out soon to be very long lives.

Minemasters3000 Try to realize that when you are being bullied, there isn't anything wrong with you. Instead try to realize their is something wrong with the bully. Feel bad for them because they have much worse issues than anything they are bullying you about. Bullies pick on people they envy most of the time, they have something they wish they had.
