Quiz games are truly the final frontier for the Japanese language student. Not only do you have to deal with a time limit, but also pop/traditional culture topics that you would never encounter in any textbook.
I'm convinced that just about everyone in this game apart from Neo and Geo are based off some celebrity known to the Japanese Neo-Geo gaming public in 1991.
Wow, your dedication to go deep into the games and their different versions in your reviews, no matter how obscure they can be, leaves me speechless. Outstanding episode !!
One interesting fact about the music in Quiz Daisousasen is that the ending theme called “Sunset Sky” is the first of a series of ending theme songs with that name trough SNK games from fatal fury to KOF games until Garou with the final song “Sunset Sky Again”
As someone that has wondered what in the hell this game was about for some years, I thank you for making an English summary with this video. I can't wait to see your video on the sequel, as, from what I've seen from the visuals, seems to be even wackier than the first game. Keep up the good work.
"I've struggled with how to tell you this. Your father... Your father's brain was put into a quiz robot." "... No, really. What happened to my father?"
"The second scenario is even crazier".... What ? I actually completely forgot there is another scenario.. The first one began with just "finding a dog".. So cool to have that kind of game shown since it's unlikely any of us would have played it. They really wanted to "seem" like a movie which is impressive in 1991 i think.
4:29 Sony Pony. 6:24 Clint Eastwood from "Escape from Alcatraz". 8:21 William Sadler from Die Hard 2. 10:52 If chins could kill. 11:57 Robocop 2. 13:43 Mike Tyson. 13:44 Marty McFly as oppose to George McFly. 24:42 Bruce Willis.
@@PAKA62 He kind of looks like a combo of Kenshiro and Bruce Lee, as he's wearing a red version of the yellow w/ blue stripe jumpsuit that Lee wore in Game of Death, and the pose he's in is one he did in Enter the Dragon when he's using nunchacku.
Really neat to see this game in it's entirety with a translation. Had no idea it was chock full of flagrant celebrity rip-offs and freaking Nazis (Neo-Geo Nazis?). Thanks for the video!
Some of the enemies in the horror story: The big bad looks like Marlon Brando The vampire looks like Bela Lugosi The spinning head girl monster looks like someone from The Exorcist
Out of curiosity, as you're going through the numbers cronologically, will you be covering the Korean versions of games too? Maybe an overview of the range even?
Hi Larry. I don't plan to cover the Korean versions in the main series. Although I might consider your idea about an overview video on the Korean releases in the future. Between AES/MVS, CD versions, and ports, the scope of the videos can get a bit out of hand. I only mentioned the Korean release of this one because it's a quiz game that isn't available in any other languages. (I found it interesting that this game was available in a language other than Japanese.) I plan to mention the Korean version again if I ever get to Quiz King of Fighters. Thanks for your interest in the series! - Neo-Alec
Ah, so that is what they are saying in the game Alec. I had absolutely no idea until seeing this video from you. Now I'm glad those mystery questions on what they are saying is finally over for me thanks to you bro. 8^) Anthony..
Very cool to see one of these quiz games with a translation. Although even with that, it looks like you should have a pretty good knowledge of various Japanese things as well.
If you just want to play through any of the modes and see everything, just enable the Unibios cheat that makes the questions only have two possible answers. And the one for infinite life if you're in AES mode.
I didn't get all the questions correct, but I did manage far more than I thought I would. The Dirty Pair cat was the oddest, as I can hear her voice call out the cat's name. I only saw that anime once, decades ago.
Quiz Daisousa Sen is an amazing and unique game, it is a shame that it was not released outside Japan but I guess it would be hard to adapt things. But maybe it was for the best, considering how Riding Hero had a poor translation and names changed so maybe it would be the same here.
about the composers, Makko and Hiraocchi are stated by Shimizu in the (incomplete) soundtrack release (released in a compilation album with the much more memorable King of the Monsters) to be "new members" (who presumably left right after this game). Although the tracks that are made by Yamate and Shimizu are obvious (the "accident" one for example is probably Yamate) edit: the soundtrack release only has the music that was in the zombie route, which is weird. i think it's SNK's only incomplete soundtrack out of all of them, also Shimizu and Yamate did a much better job on Last Resort
Also one more thing bro. Since you know a lot about NeoGeo, mind if I ask you, do you know why Quiz Daisousa Sen was not released on the NeoGeo CD, considering many other titles from 1991~1993 were released on the NGCD later?. This would have been a great release on the system!, an amazing game that would run smooth.
Hi there. Thank you for your nice comments. I gave my reasoning for why it wasn't released on the Neo Geo CD in the video (in the section where I would normally talk about the Neo Geo CD version). Did you see it? -Neo-Alec
@@BasementBrothers OOF, I didn't but there was a reason, it was because I am really looking forward to play it myself that I decided to stop after watching your review of Chris' story. My current level of Japanese is very low, I can only read about 20 kanji so I can't enjoy Quiz Daisousa Sen and Quiz KOF yet, but now I decided to watch everything and got your explanation ^^. Thank you very much for being so kind to tell me this instead of ignoring me(some people could have done this), someday when I improve my JP enough I'll still play it, and I hope someday I can be as knowledgeable as you on the Neo•Geo, even without the Naazo!
5:37 should be a trick question. Akira Kurosawa said that it was just a massive coincidence that Ran was similar to King Lear. Who knows if he was telling the truth though 😂
My only question is: why on God’s Green Earth are there NO Neo Geo ROM hacks?! Think about it: I would love to see a... Magician Lord Randomizer R-Type II for the system (COULD work, minus the aspect ratio for multi-scrolling in the game) KOF 94 with a Team Edit mode Among others I can’t Name I say this because-outside bootlegs, you don’t really see any ROM hacks for the NeoGeo scene; but you see like OVER 9000 ROM hacks for Sonic The Hedgehog, or ANOTHER Super Mario World Hack, or even Touhou! It’s like... can anyone think of something else to hack? Can’t ANYONE think of something else? Be freaking original!!! Oh and at 8:54, I am eternally thankful you did NOT reference the disgrace to the NeoGeo: Crouching Pony Hidden Dragon! Edit: I also want to give you a heads up for Last Resort... it is... BRUTAL. My only advice I can give is to judge the background colors upon what option power-up would be most appropriate to use. I hope this helps...

This is one of the best episodes. It got me hooked all along
These are truly the greatest episodes.

at 3:18 that's a Tosa Inu. Yakuza use them for dog fighting. Even if this was entirely in english it's japanese to a fault.

Literally one of my favorite channels on TH-cam. Thanks so much for all the info on every video you do it's great!
Very intersting episode. This project is so consistently good, among the best game documentaries I have seen on YT.

Glad I could help! Looking forward to talking about the sequel one day.
This video missed my sub box and I only just realized you uploaded it. Keep up the great reviews.
Loved the focus on the fake TV names, and the pull of the classic Simpsons clip.
"I've struggled with how to tell you this. Your father... Your father's brain was put into a quiz robot."
"... No, really. What happened to my father?"
Your channel is exactly what i like in retrogaming
This is the definitive review. Top notch.
Amazing channel, keep going the great work! I really love your deep review thank you so much Sir!
Much appreciated!

This is a great deep dive into the adventures of McDonalds and Kentucky Fried.
Btw did you know that Daisousasen means Criminal Investigation AND also is the homonym for "TV scanline" ?? So funny!

Edgy one. How's your health my guy? Hope you are well...
Miss your "Hello yooo"
That one guy from the poster is directly ripped from the poster escape from alkatraz
Shhhh! It's "Altcaraz." Wanna get sued?
Damn! I really thought we're already halfway through your Neo Geo collection!
Not even close! We have to get to NGH-272 (172nd numbered game). This is only 23.
Geo Kentacky sounds like a man among men. If he were in the military he would have at least made it to Colonel.
Ah, so that is what they are saying in the game Alec. I had absolutely no idea until seeing this video from you. Now I'm glad those mystery questions on what they are saying is finally over for me thanks to you bro. 8^)

1:31 a true SNK blonde beauty. 6:40 another strong blonde beauty by the Japanese.
Another fantastic video =D It's a shame there's no english translation - yes its a bit meh, but still cool to try out.

19:49 -- Could it be a secret command at the tv buttons? Up, down, right, left, C.
How hilarious would it be if the informant answered with a "Great Scott!" or "Glate Scot" every time you answered correctly. >_

This game looks nuts for a quiz game lol.
I really like the graphics in this game.
Gotta do the hard yards till we get to the good stuff, can’t wait to scramble to that SHOOTIHG game.

Carving up a man and using his brain to make a QUIZ ROBOT is actually horrifying.
Great Stuff!

(It's LG).
No doubt that's Inoki with that chin. And around 14:09, Giant Baba?

0:27 bro, Neo is the red and Geo is the blue XD
But isn't it actually a quiz cyborg? (Also I'm sure most people realized it was basically a ripoff of Robocop 2)
If you've seen my other recent Neo Geo videos, you can probably tell I can't be bothered with the difference. Plus the word "robot" is just funnier.
3:24 Jack Nicholson?!?!?
How is this forgettable? Lol I'd love to play this with friends the whole weekend
Um, good luck with that.
