Thank you, Thank you , Thank you! I ran my first marathon (LA) on March 19th 2023 and took all of your advice from nutrition to pace. It was such a great experience. I finished better than expected and now looking forward to my next marathon. Thank you for making these videos, they are soo helpful!!
One of the best pieces of advice that I got from my wife (who isn’t a runner) and has helped me not dehydrate and never cramp is to get an IV the day before. I was skeptical, but it’s always helped and three straight marathons I’ve felt good at mile 20 and finished well. It’s the only way to know you are getting enough fluids. Drinking isn’t. It also helps with salt and potassium. I’d never not get one.
Hey Jason - I've never heard of this before this makes a ton of sense!! So my question is...how does one get an IV for themselves when it's not medically necessary?? I'm very curious now!
Great video! I ran a 50k in June, and it was hot and humid. Numerous fast runners were struggling at the side of the trail with cramps. I went out and bought salt sticks to keep in my pack, for myself or others. I'm doing my first trail marathon in a month, and I'm excited to try that distance! And I'm a huge fan of mantras...I have a bunch written down that I read before every race, so I can pick the one that fits the race as it progresses.
Thanks, Kelly! Ugh hot and humid running conditions are the worst...I've been lucky enough to not have to race in that...yet. I definitely do what you do with the mantras...one just sort of seems to fit and then I put it on repeat to tick away the miles. Way to go on the 50k...hoping to get one under my belt in the next couple of years. Can't wait to hear how your trail marathon goes - best of luck!
@@runningwithjane I am running the Los Angeles Marathon. I am struggling a bit with my long runs. Can't seem to go farther then 15 miles. I had an 16 to 18 miler planned today and fell while stepping on to the sidewalk. Had to leave it at 14. Hurt my knee a bit. I seem to get leg pains after 10 to 12 miles.
I'm so sorry to hear about your fall!! Have you seen a PT about your leg pains? That would be my best recommendation...but adding in body weight exercises to strengthen can be good too if you aren't already. If there is any way to slow down your long runs a bit more could help as well!
When I was dealing with bad cramping in my first marathon another runner handed me a pickle juice shot and that helped right away! I've also seen people run with a little ziplock baggie of salt. I'm going to add that to my kit this year.
For my husband it definitely was! I now always keep them with me like a security blanket, but I try to stay ahead of it with utilizing nutrition that has enough electrolytes. (I've also been lucky enough so far to not run marathons that are too warm.)
Hi! Thanks for this! About to run my first! (NYC) Salt stick to treat cramping or to prevent? I was told to take them every 30 min while running to prevent.
Hi Sara! That's so exciting - I haven't run NYC but what a way to start your marathon journey! I personally don't take the salt tablets as a prevention method simply because I take Huma Gels that have additional electrolytes in them. But, there's no reason you can't use the salt tabs as an electrolyte source during your marathon to prevent cramping as long as this method has worked for you in training. Specifically, when my husband ran his marathon and started cramping up, the salt tablets were used to treat them and they went away. I hope that helps! All the best to you at NYC!
Hey! Sorry about that - I changed my website and it's no longer there. Please email me at jane@readysetmarathon.com requesting the "marathon checklist" and I will send it to you for opting in to my email list. Thanks!
Grt advice about not trusting pacers, it’s smart to talk to them first to understand their approach… but even then it may not come true… run your own race if they aren’t working for ya…. Ask me how I know….
Sounds like there's a story there... 100% talk to the pacer beforehand...I tried to run with one once and realized by the end of the first mile that his strategy was not my strategy. At my 15k this weekend the 8:00 pacer was ahead of the 7:30 pacer the first two miles! 🤦♀️
Hey there! I have been running basically my entire adult life. Much more consistently after having kids 5 years ago, though. It is life-changing that's for sure - if you do decide to get into running I encourage you to surround yourself with advice and motivation as you get started on your journey!

THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY! Marathon number one is all about having a great experience, finishing, and saying, "When can I do that again??!" Congrats!!

Thank you for another great video. I have 3 more weeks of training for my 1st marathon. This video was really useful. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
You're very welcome, Amanda...thanks for tuning in!! Excited for you! Which one are you running?

Yes!! Excellent tip on the pickle juice!! I just might have to have this on hand for my next marathon...
Correct about hydration, I thought I was drinking enough but had still lost 1.5kgs of weight which I assume is water by the end of the run
Exactly what's happening. Want to consider salt loss, too, so important to replace with electrolytes.
@@runningwithjane oh yeah that nearly became a problem also lol
I've yet to try salt sticks, and also wanting to try the "walk through aid station' approach! Seems like salt is a miracle cure.

@@runningwithjane Thanks so much! So much to think about. At this point I'm just trying to relax and enjoy it!
Where can I get a copy of the checklist?

Great work on the run! How long have you been running for? i am thinking about getting into it I figure it would make a great video series.
