3)It is not transformative in nature. 1891年柴可夫斯基受邀至美國訪問旅行，回來後即受到聖彼得堡Mariinski劇院的委託，根據霍夫曼(E. T. A. Hoffmann)的「胡桃鉗和老鼠國王」的夢幻童話故事，寫了這首芭蕾舞劇配樂《胡桃鉗》。《胡桃鉗》描述一位少女克拉拉在聖誕夜那天，收到了一件胡桃鉗的玩偶。晚上當客人都離去後，她偷偷溜下床去找她的胡桃鉗玩具。卻撞見鼠王帶著一群耗子兵出現大肆破壞。胡桃鉗集合所有的玩具兵與之展開大戰。情急時，克拉拉以拖鞋追打鼠王，救出她的胡桃鉗。忽然它變成一位英俊的王子，帶領克拉拉前往甜蜜王國去旅行。在那裡他們受到小仙女盛情的款待，人們跳起各式各樣風格的舞蹈。最後隨著這首「花之圓舞曲」的旋律，全劇在活潑燦爛的歡樂中結束。
