I really appreciate your videos like this, because I can't afford lessons. I'm disabled and almost died from a severe car crash, and painting is one of the only things I can enjoy. It's difficult for me, but I love it, even through the pain of it. I can't tell you how much this helps my spirits lift. Thanks again so much!!! ❤❤❤ Love from USA!!!
This is one of my favourite acrylic tutorials! It got me really excited about glazing and how much it can really enhance your artwork. I’d had a bottle of glazing fluid on my shelf for months not really knowing what to do with it until watching your tutorial. I painted this one twice and I’m leveraging these techniques for another fish painting. Every Sunday, my dogs have sardines with their dinner - we call it “Sardine Sunday.” I hung one of my sardine paintings just above my dog’s dish so he can enjoy sardines all week long. lol Thank you for this amazing tutorial!
Will, I am a 10 year old artist in the Philippines, I sincerely thank you for your wonderful and inspiring art even if I use oils weirdly better than acrylics, for I just simply use your art as inspiration for me. Thank You😉 P.S. Please do not be amazed by my elegant English because I am in a special English class in the Philippines😀
Hi Will, thanks for this wonderful lesson. It was amazing to watch you do it- I could almost “see” you pause and observe and make those deliberate brush marks . Honestly a pleasure to watch . Thanks again!
Thank you for the great content, Will. You have persuaded me to return to painting 29 years after graduating from art college. You make this look so easy but when I put the video down and try to do it myself, the results are never the same. But I’m having a great time learning from you again! Your videos are better than my college professors!
Thank you so much for this video and all your superb acrylic guides! I find your approach to teaching and the level of detail you go into so incredibly helpful. Very grateful for your channel and the Will Kemp Art School, keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for your very easy to understand and yet still quite comprehensive tutorials. I am so glad to have found your videos. I envy the ease with which you handle the paints and the brushes. Being a novice at this, one of my biggest obstacles is loosening up and trying to overcome my hesitance to just go for it and get creative. Thank you so much!
Oh my ! I’m so happy that I found you. Maybe this will help me paint a rainbow trout!!! I can’t find any help on a pix I want to paint!! Thank you for sharing
Gearing up for Acrylic III class. As a beginner, hopefully on the way to early intermediate stage, videos like yours are so very helpful. I thank you for to sharing knowledge.
Thank you very much for providing us with very informative content! I really went back to painting because of your videos and I am very grateful! Kudos to you!
So so good! Looking deceptively simple but there is years of learning and practice and an artist ‘s eye in it. Still, if my herring turns out half as good I will be happy! Thank you Will!
I love your classes! I have learned so much from your videos and I appreciate the fact that you share them with us. Your presentation is always notch and easy to follow. I hope that you will continue to post your videos because I have learned so much from them. Thanks for the great content!
Beautiful rendering as always! So like your style of a light touch, and seeing tonal and then colour 'patches' to construct the image rather than seeing a 'fish'. Still working on that myself. Love your videos.
Brilliant - thank you! I'm just starting to use glazes and was confused if you could use different colours of glazes at the same time, and blend them together while wet. This answered my question!
thank you for this! i usually never do tonal underpaintings, which I think is the reason i get frustrated when i start to paint and things just "look wrong." I'm doing a still life of some bananas right now using an underpainting and it's turning out pretty good! thanks again!
Thank you so much, this video was so informative! In digital its easier to paint in values and then pop color on top, but i never knew how to translate it in traditional... Thank you for teaching us about paint+glazing liquid! I love using acrylics, i will try it out! ❤
This is wonderful. I’ve been an artist all my life. I’m in my fifties now, since raising my children, I’ve just now have gotten back into it. I drew comics and whimsical art when I was younger, and started arts-n-crafts when my children were younger. I’ve been doing crafts now for about six months and I’m so drawn to painting that that’s all I want to do now. I started painting on rocks but I’m ready for the canvas. I’ll follow you from now on and learn what you’re teaching. You’re very patient and and an awesome teacher! Thank you so much. Is there an order to your videos?
Hi Kristy, really pleased you've been enjoying the lessons, there isn't a specific order to the video lessons, but there is a free pdf guide on the website that gives a suggested guide through: willkempartschool.com/free-pdf-download-beginners-guide-to-acrylics/ Cheers, Will
So glad to see you back with more videos! You mentioned a stay wet pallet? What is that?? Keeping paint from drying out too soon is an ongoing challenge for me.
Hi Carol, yes it's a sheet of absorbent paper (or sponge) that is soaked with water and has another sheet of greaseproof paper placed on top. You place the acrylics on top of the greaseproof paper. As your acrylics dry by evaporation, the water content is replaced into the paint through osmosis from the water reservoir underneath. You can purchase them from art stores or have a go at making your own with some paper towel, greaseproof paper and an empty ice cream tub! Cheers, Will
Thanks for sharing, very good as usual. PS: It would be a good idea to always put your site's URL in the video description, so we could just click and go.
Hey Mhrobe, glad you enjoed it, the links to the reference image and materials list are a coupe of lines down in the description under the video. Cheers, Will
thank you so much, you explain and show what you're doing so well, thank you. A video I shall definitely be revisiting time and again till I can get this right. (it's now in my playlist so I can't lose you :) )
Hope you are well, missing your videos.... In fact I am always hoping you will make some videos about making acrylic abstracts, something different than what you see everywhere on TH-cam.. Something to paint with a brew and a couple of biscuits
Thanks Will for this, and all your videos. You really explain things so well. I'm just wondering how your beautiful burnt umber string on the tear-off palette seems to stay so creamy and doesn't dry out. Is it part of the "open' series??
Hi Anne, thanks very much, the string on the tear-off palette stays wet due to the volume of paint that I've laid out, the colours are part of the standard heavy body range. Cheers, Will
Would you mind if I asked you about the trick of your palette: how do you manage to keep the paints on it, while the palette is put vertical? Every time I try this my paints are pouring down. Is it a gel of some sort? Or do you simply use a very specific heavy body brand of paint? Thank you :)
Great stuff as always, and wonderfully presented! Why not just use ultramarine for the blues, did you decide beforehand to use a slightly different colour palette than in the reference image?
Hi Teemu, yes, I wanted to demo the glazing properties of the Phthalo and keep to a limited palette for beginners, but you could definitely work with an Ultramarine Blue rather than tweaking with the Crimson, but then would need to switch to the Phthalo for its glazing properties (or a Manganese Blue if you wanted a super subtle glaze) Cheers, Will
I was just wondering. How much of a break is there in between the different color schemes? Do you like take some time to let some paint dry before you go on to the next tone, or do you just keep going? How long did it take to paint the fish in total?
Hi Susan, yes it would, if I were using oils over the top I would dilute the acrylic more with water so the oil has a better surface to grab onto. Cheers, Will
Hi Will, greetings from Finland. I would like to ask You about Acrylic Glazing Techniques... I use Daler-rowney acrylic paints (System 3- series) and when glazing I use only water to thin the paint. Some people say You can use just water to make very thin acrylic glazes but is it safe for the paint layers ? I would like to save some money , but do You recommend to go an buy some medium ? and thanks for good videos and articles of Your website , helped me a lot since I started painting.
Hi Jukka, I find when working at an easel using a glazing medium is pretty essential to prevent the paint from pouring down the canvas, if you're working on a very absorbent surface (like watercolour paper) you can just about get away with it but a glazing medium will create a stronger bond to the paint film. You might find this article of interest especially the section form Sarah Sands from Golden paints on thinning acrylics: willkempartschool.com/getting-started-how-to-choose-what-to-paint-on/ Cheers, Will

wow, you are so great, i did not get it about wet pallete, also, do we have to use any medium to slow down the drying time?
Hi Mike, not within the actual paints, just the glazing liquid gloss which will slow down the drying time slightly.

Will
I was just wondering. How much of a break is there in between the different color schemes? Do you like take some time to let some paint dry before you go on to the next tone, or do you just keep going? How long did it take to paint the fish in total?

Very helpful! Would this work with oils also, using an acrylic value underpainting and then glazing with oils?

Hi Will, always enjoy your teaching, your art. Would you mind I have a question for you.
I bought an Art Spectrum acid free 400 gsm acrylic paper pad. I gessoed it with two coats before I started painting. Well, the paint didn’t want to stay on the paper but moved around my brush. Was it because I gessoed it? Many thanks
Hi Vincent, sometimes on acrylic papers there is a seal that's been used to protect the paper that can repel the water, you can try adding a few drops of an acrylic flow release medium to your water, this is called a surfactant that reduces surface tension and helps the paint to adhere.
Cheers,
Will
