How to Glaze with Acrylics

  • Glazing is a great way to tweak your finished paintings.
    Top 4 Glazing Tips:
    1. Pre-wet your painting with painting medium.
    2. Use a soft brush.
    3. Multiple thin glazes are better than one thick one.
    4. Transparent paints glaze better than opaque paints.
Hit that like button for me if you like this!
    Thanks,
    Richard Robinson

Although glazes are usually used to enhance areas, they can also be used to dull down areas. For example - turn a bright blue sky into an evening sky?....use an orange glaze over the blue to slightly darken the blue and desaturate it.

I've heard of glazing before but this demo really helped me understand the application of the technique. It definitely adds a depth and contrast to the painting. I guess the danger is picking the wrong colour to glaze with. Practice and play music be the answer!

Thank you! I've inherited a lot of random acrylic paints and mediums from Dad when he died. I have never painted in acrylics and am scared of them! So I will take heart and watch some of your videos and see if I can work out how to use them. Today I found some glaze mediums and had no idea. Now I do.

May i ask...using a glaze, is it like putting a varnish over the top? Or is it to add/intensify areas of the painting...does it add a sheen? So would it make the area added shiny? Would you need to do the whole painting? Or can u do just a small area?

  • @skasskass8331

Such a helpful video. Can i ask what is the difference in using Glazing Medium and the Gloss and Varnish Medium you used for this. I have both products but it one better than the other? Thanks

    • @ARTPAINTING101
      @ARTPAINTING101 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Glazing medium has more retarder and leveling agents added to it, this improves working time and helps reduce brushstrokes as they tend to flatten out. The finish, if you are using the correct brush and amount of paint, will yield similar results. If you are working on very large canvasses probably using glazing medium would allow better edge transitions (where you last left off)

    • @RichardRobinsonStudio

Daniel Wetzel as far as I know it doesn’t matter. It’s all acrylic which is very flexible and doesn’t have the same cracking problems as oils. For oils I’d use walnut oil or liquin for glazing, and wait a good amount of time before glazing.

Haha no rules in art, he chose those colors because he was trying give atmospheric light of the sunset, more yellow in the center, reddish as the light spreads. You could use (off) white glazes over distant mountains (blue recedes) green over trees shadows (signifying reflected light) even use a single unifying color over an entire painting to tie all areas together.
