This game is how I learned who Thanos was. I didn't read the Infinity Saga, so I didn't know who Thanos was, nor did I know what an "Infinity Gem" was. Kind of funny to think today that back then I questioned why Dr. Doom wasn't the final boss. I was like EVERYONE knows who Dr. Doom is. Thanos is a nobody!
Yah same here...played this so much with my brother as a kid and it was this game (along with the X-men and Spiderman Animated shows) that brought me into comics the most and reading Infinity Gauntlet and the Silver Surfer comics preceding it.
I had a similar story, though I first saw him on mvc2 then I played this and X-Men cota on an emulator and learned about thanos. This was like in the early 2000's.
Out of all Fighters, I think this still is my favourite selection screen, with the screens and Billboards on the building tops, then the smash out and drop down,
He was kinda replaced or merged with Loki. Thanos was about to strangle Mephisto to death, who attempted to betray him. Seems that's how Loki was actually killed in the infinity war film...
Someone I use to be friends with told me to play this game and honestly, I'm glad I listened to him. This game was so much better than I thought it was. I love the infinity gem mechanic in this game (Which is weird because I don't think i would like it in Marvel VS Capcom Infinite). It did have a good choice of fighters, good stage backgrounds, great visuals, and of course the great and nostalgic CPS2 Marvel music. Really appreciate this title along with X-Men: Children of the Atom for eventually spawning the VS Series.
This game was fantastic. Loved the roster, and use of the gems. There were so many possibilities, you just had to find a flow with each character. That soundtrack (chef's kiss)

Aww were finally going back to that magic of Marvel Super Heroes! Learning from X-Men COTA, Capcom really flexed their muscles with gorgeous artwork ( using some of Marvels best art as reff!) And expanding the awesome combos with lush visuals! The music was phenomenal and the voice actors came straight from the animated series( some anyway). This was the 1st of many great reasons to be a gamer!
This game on the SEGA Saturn absolutely crushes! Plug in any Japan RAM cart and a new option appears in the options menu to use extra RAM. This works in US version as well as the Jpn version and makes the animation even better! My friends and I played the hell out of this every night after college/work in 1997! Good times! The PS version is just sad.
Just a heads up, a lot of the artwork used for the side and title of the arcade machines were by super artist Arthur Adams and advertising art by Joe MAD!

Well you didn't need to scratch the disc to play n enjoy the game..that's why i won't let my nephews touch my video games cuz i know they'll scratch them all. 🤷♂️😆😆

Marvel Super Heroes was a great game, I still play the PS3 version every so often, Psylock and Doctor Doom are my favorites but I find Anita to be an interesting character to use
I instantly fell in love with this game in the arcade and love it even more than X-men Children Of The Atom. It plays smoother and more polished. The gem dynamic added an extra layer to the gameplay. I still play this game to this day using emulation and an old arcade cabinet I found at a laundromat. It's a classic that never gets old.

I still remember the first time I first laid eyes on this arcade cabinet as a very young lad in NYC. Time froze. I didn’t understand why. I mean, I was a fledging comic book fan and all, but still. This moment in time is forever crystallized in my psyche. Same as when I first saw X-Men :COTA. Now that I think of it, every single Marvel Crossover arcade cabinet up to Marvel Vs Capcom 1 had this impact on me. (Maybe I tapped into the future somehow and felt the MCU coming through).

Loved this game. Got it as a Christmas present for Sega Saturn. Awesome to play as Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Hulk. Also, it made me a huge Captain America fan. Seeing him in action made me realize that he wasn’t generic or boring, but pretty cool. Started to read more of the comics because of that.
What a great game! First we played it in the arcades, then we got the watered down version for the PS1. Whatever, we were happy as there were no other options. I have such fond memories of this game that I even bought the Arcade1up limited edition got it shipped here to Europe (well, since it includes Punisher it was a must). Great video, thanks!
Just got my Saturn copy a couple weeks ago. It was the last of the capcom/marvel crossover games I needed. It's great - im having a lot of fun with it. It's definitly a big jump in quality compared to COTA.

MSH is one of my favorite games from the MarvelXCapcom collaboration. The animation, the art, the presentation, the game play, everything about it is top notch. But most of all, the soundtrack. The soundtrack is top to bottom amazing. Dr Doom's theme is my favorite as it still sends chills down my spine!
I wonder if Capcom was considering developing this for the Snes. It did get a side scroller, War Of The Gems, which has a little bit of the fighting game, The Infinity War, feel to it. WotG is not a bad game itself, but I did kinda feel jipped that we got a side scroller instead of the fighting game.

This is the first game I played "seriously" at the arcade. I was 14 and the thrill of having to fight for your life (quarter) was really incredible for me.
Ah, I played this till my fingers bled in the arcades. T'was always my favourite non-SF game. Took everything good about XMCOTA and improved on it. Also the first game to ever get Spider-Man "right".

As iconic as the Marvel vs Capcom series is, I feel like Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes had their own identity before the tag team mechanics and would be worth continuing as a series. Instead of everything else being so focused on the movies, imagine a game that focuses on the aesthetic of the COMICS. You could have hand drawn animation in the style of the comic books... it would be glorious. I mean, even these old sprites are still charming to this day.
There was another Capcom game but based more in the Infinity War comic (the sequel to the Infinity Gauntlet comic) and also it was a beat 'em up: Marvel Super Heroes War of the Gems for the SNES.
Little disappointed you didn't mention this isn't Capcom's only game with the infinity gems and Marvel super heroes story as there was Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems on the Super Nintendo even though that was a platforming beatemup.
All of these retrospectives make me see an opportunity for Disney and Capcom, one already done for the Street Fighter franchise. Marvel vs. Capcom: The Ultimate HD Collection Games included... I'd also suggest that maybe there would be a small handful of additional characters in each game that were popular at the time of original release. (For example: I've always been puzzled that Sagat wasn't in XM vs. SF to be Sabretooth's natural tag partner, and that neither games under the X-Men brand name had Beast, Jean Grey, or Jubilee at a time when the animated series was airing.)

I LOVE Joe’s art! Discovered the X-Men Comics when he was doing The Phalanx Covenant.... loved that he had a semi Anime style for Western Comics!

Capcom recycled the sprites for the SNES game, it was a vice the company had for years.
