Get stuff painted. I'd say 90% of gamers don't "love" painting, but can manage it. Paint to your own standard and just stuff painted. If you don't like painting...don't make it more of a chore by chasing some impossible standard. Paint to a standard you're happy with and move on. Oh, and cheat. Colour primers, airbrushes, dips, washes, drybrushing, texture paints, grass-tufts etc. Use whatever methods you need to get the results you like the fastest/easiest way - again, unless you're a diehard painter (most of us are not). You'd be stunned what you can achieve by cheating.
I must admit something, I'm not in D&D, but I really like this shit, I have seen your maps tutorials (three times because I'm bad at drawing every ducking thing) but I really enjoy this videos
Loved this! great tip about angling your mini - use the sticky tac too - i found pill bottles kept getting knocked over by some klutz... mini flowerpots worked great - don't tip over and you can stick a thumb inside and rotated the mini easily without touching it or dropping it... another great video Nate great job
Really great tutorial. I'm an avid 3D-printer, but have never gotten into painting as it seems a bit daunting to me. I have however seen many of these types of tutorials, but none have explained so well and so clearly. Thank you!
A mistake I made a couple times is with the clear coat at the end. In the beginning, I used a spray clear coat. Worked fine enough, then one model, when I was finished, I grabbed an old can I got cheap at home depot that I thought I shaked enough on a paticularly humid day and sprayed it on. When it dried, the model was white and almost sandpaper to the touch. The lesson I learned was to test out any clear coat beforehand on a extra piece or the frame you get with plastic pieces beforehand
What a timely video! I just got back into the swing of things, and while I'm not doing D&D minis, I *am* painting my Rangers from "Heroes of the Grid" and have steadily been building my skills up over time. I use a pill bottle with sticky tack as my handle, and have been pretty good about using it, aside from some of the foot soldier minis which I tend to do more assembly line-style.
Perfectionism is a huge one for me, and difficult minis as well. I painted for a year and a long time ago, when I was introduced to Warhammer, and now that I have enough money I'm considering taking it up again (though for ttrpgs instead of Warhammer).
I made a lot of the mistakes you mentioned. I have also accepted that because of my shaky hands due to meds I take my miniatures will never look as good as those I see posted. I don't care I am having fun. And that is why I do any hobby. To dry my brushes I use brush holders made to hold make up brushes after cleaning. I had been using them for years for my expensive make up brushes and then one day I was like duh 🙄 they could be used for any brushes. You can find them pretty cheap all over the internet and Amazon.
I used to take paint directly from the lip of my GW paints, leaving the pot open as long as I needed that color, which made the whole pot dry out in no time, and whatever paint I could save from them, was very thick and annoying to work with...
I would very much like to, but unfortunately they didn’t send me a review copy, so as I didn’t get it until after release date and I already have a video plan for next week, it’s a bit iffy.
I spend way too much time on my minis and still get discouraged when I see people making miracles in a shorter time. The key for me was to get a lamp/magnifier. Saved my back and saved time redoing details.
I would highly recommend getting actual miniature paints, do not struggle due to poor materials such as craft paint, setting your self up with the appropriate tools will make things so much easier
@@euansmith3699 I saw that. :) His was actually from the Crippled God Foundry pack though. Similar pack for March. Seems quite a few companies are doing a nature theme for March (Saint Patrick's day/Spring coming, etc.)
Huh. Well, I suppose if you find it worth it for the finish product, keep doing it? If not, maybe it's time to move to a different medium. Have you considered Pathfinder Pawns? Or Geek Tank Games Tokens?
Biggest mistake= Getting in too deep too quickly. Don’t buy 50 plus paints, 200 dollars in brushes, lighting set ups, paint racks a couple hundred miniatures and a 3D print subscription your first year. Start slow, grow organically and have more fun.
Hooboy, just in time, i just started getting into mini painting
Enjoy! It's awesome.

My Redgrass handle came in, and I gotta say this is without a doubt the best handle I've come across.
Cool! They’re so great.

That pipe-insulation brush holder is a great idea; and it looks cool too.
Progress over perfection is a lesson I am still struggling to learn after a decade plus

Sweet! Glad you did a video on minis. I'd love to see more of them.
Awesome video Nate! I made so many of these same mistakes when I first started painting minis. Lots of gems here.
I just wanted to tell you thank you for the efforts you put into making videos.
Thanks man, I appreciate it!

Don't overwash! My first minis were all drenched in dark washes, muddy and coffee stained.
Ooh. Yeah, I’ve seen those minis. Not a good look.
This was a great video. Simple. I really liked not getting extremely detailed minis or least mixing it up with simple designs.
I would say a good tip would also be prep. Making sure you remove extra supports or sanding the bottom of the base smooth
This was great, thank you! I do have a question about primed and unprimed figures.. do they need to be primed? Does it matter?
Yes. If they aren’t pre primed I recommend it. I use Vallejo surface primer, and I included an Amazon link in the video description.
@@WASD20 thank you so much 🙏

I've watched countless videos on painting tips and guides, but I'm still not good compared to what you've done, like your dragon!
Or Ent! lol
It’s been years of practice and watching lots of TH-cam videos from other painters. :)
Are you going to do a review on candle keep mysteries or is that not your thing?
YES HE SHOULD! Petition to make review candlekeep mysteries
I would very much like to, but unfortunately they didn’t send me a review copy, so as I didn’t get it until after release date and I already have a video plan for next week, it’s a bit iffy.
I'll probably do an impressions video somewhere sometime in the next month.
Nice timing! I was just going to look for a d&d video to watch! 🙏😂👍💙
great video! ive started customizing some figures and these are really good tips
a lotta good tips here
Helpful tips, thanks!
Awsone info
What Brand of paint and Brushes you use
Do you make your own sculpting Tools
Great tips.
great video nate! lots of tips - many i learned the hard way...
Thanks, John!
Where are the links to the products you showcased?

Nice! Great advice. Good lighting especially is key!!

I am trying to draw middle earth but I keep having trouble getting the shape
You, Duncan Rhodes and Squidmar all posted similar videos today lol
Whaaat? Haha. Oh well.
Pefect timing for people to get into the hobby haha
@@WASD20 Black Magic Craft did a "how not to paint with oils" video recently using one of those Loot Crate Treemen. They are cool looking minis.

@@WASD20 Thank you; that's a cognition failure on my part :D As for the prevalent nature theme, I guess that Spring is springing :D
I was taught the thickness of melted ice cream.
I like that.
no.1 mistake, purchasing miniatures.
Welcome to the plastic crackhouse :P
Can someone play dnd without a miniature and a map?
Yes. Many people do.
I've used loose dice as place holders while I build up my mini selection
My biggest mistake was thinking painting minis is fun. It is not fun. It's a lot of work.
Huh. Well, I suppose if you find it worth it for the finish product, keep doing it? If not, maybe it's time to move to a different medium. Have you considered Pathfinder Pawns? Or Geek Tank Games Tokens?

Completely agree!
Things I wish I knew: how to paint miniatures
Found them. Apparently I'm blind.
Great! Let me know if I left any off.
Nope, all there. Had to get one of the handles and a set of the extra tops. Keep it up Nate!
