@@brilobox2 it’s a fundamental problem with the game itself. The fact that powerful spells can be wasted so easily/randomly is something that should have been fixed like 30 years ago.

This is my first watch through of Campaign two and I will be immeasureably dissapointed if Jamedi dies. Small thing, but I like that when the vines attacked, Jester’s immediate reaction was to pick up Caleb. It probably prevented lots of damage to him and freed him to attack the plants. Truly the best buff, and a nice character moment to boot.

Bane is such an underrated spell. It's a level one spell that cripples all of the attacks and saving throws of THREE creatures for TEN ROUNDS. It basically pumps your entire party's AC and modifiers up by 1-4.
CHA save. Usually it gets one or two. It's good, but it's easily flubbed, and flubbed a second time if whatever failed its save is the one that dies next turn. It's ... a bit random, basically. If you see a big bad and his two named bodyguards, though, go for it. :)
I voluntarily swapped out of College of Lore into College of Spirits on my Bard because Cutting Words + Bane is absolutely redonkulous against big single targets
Travis: Okay. How many people are seriously considering 'Fluffernutter?' By a show of hands? *everyone stares as Sam and Laura raise their hands, grinning devilishly* I am LOSING IT
@@mariaenvoikertoa Same, it was animations of C2 that got me into Critical Role. I went all the way to start of C1 and have worked my way here... Imma be a little controversial here and say that that is what fucked me up the most about those episodes...
@@thetuerk A component pouch works like an arcane focus, meaning that he can use it to fullfill the Material components that do not have a gold cost that certain spells require. The Component pouch always has all these components prepared and it is considered that whenever the character has free time they use some of it to keep the bag filled. In later episodes he even plays out gathering his non-cost components and I love it.
I feel Marisha is often missing entire plot points or story elements altogether. Just a bit earlier they were talking about fog in darkness and everyone got it except Marisha just yelling "what?" but everyone ignored it. It happens often and is frustrating to watch.
@@jochenpanjaer980 to be fair I have sometimes also problems to see some plot points when I play. instead I can think more for combat or if I want something I find ways my DM doesn't think of. that's just sometimes.
@@FarseerRK There is literally a meme of Travis as being fjorgetful, for reasons I won't spoil. Marisha is not better or worse than any if them, asking for clarification when you did not understand something either because you were (a) taking extensive notes (b) thinking about another detail entirely or (c) are unsure whether you misheard something is perfectly normal and does not imply intelligence at all. Implying she is dim witted merely because you assume because she asks something because she was too stupid is wrong. And suggesting she doesn't pay attention, as if she were a lesser player, says more about you than Marisha. She is an excellent player and I feel sorry for you if you can't acknowledge that.
Marisha's sick Beau rp was so funny tho. Still, probably a really bad idea to enter the venomous snake people temple with a disadvantage on con saves or checks.
Normally I enjoy Taliesin but this episode he consistently put others down for trying things that were risky especially fluffernutter. When his characters are known for doing crazy shit. Just got irritated this episode.
I really appreciate how Matt locked in with Marisha and said, "don't listen to them. What do you want to do?" He could tell Marisha was second-guessing herself and falling out of character, and he locked her into a 1:1 with him for that moment. I've moderated webinars for businesses and man can ot be difficult to control the room and manage the flow. Matt constantly impresses me with his ability to listen and act with incredible precision, and encourage a healthy environment for all players.
@@Story_Sandwich To be fair, Matt also incorrectly applies disadvamtage in this game. Not against high level spells, but at least twice - Caleb and Cadeuceus - were given disadvantage using ranged attacks at 10 or 15 feet away from the Hydra. Matt even looked up the rule and then *still* misquoted it. It's about being ajacent to a hostile foe, not firing at someone who's melee range you are in.
Because that's survivable? And they're not even level ten yet? So having 11 HP is hurting, but not 'DING DONG, I NEED HEALING, DING DONG HELP'. Now level 15? 20? Getting down to 11 HP? That's when you start getting concerned.
@@williammitchell6254 Yeah, but at that point having an extra 10 hp doesn't really do anything. The only worry is if the enemy can do more than your max health plus your current health in one hit. If that happens then you instantly die. Otherwise it's actually better to drop to zero than to heal to full, since a grave cleric is way better at healing people who are already dying.
In DnD 5e, going down is not a big deal. PCs rarely die beyond 5th level due to healing word and revivify being way too good of spells. You've got to SERIOUSLY fuck up to die in 5e
Enemy: does scary stuff Caleb:*announces with great confidence the materials for a spell he's pulling out of his pocket* - "I'm about to end this mans whole career"
I love how after the ship incident the group had this crisis of conscience about their actions and promised to be better, and now they’re slaughtering people in a religious temple in order to release an obviously evil serpent god into the world because a pirate told them to.
I mean, I think they all agree that they're mostly playing along and looking for their chance to put a stop to this pirate, but want to have that fight at the most advantageous moment they can arrange and learn more about this web of schemes that seems to reach across a significant portion of this corner of the world first. They're not planning on raising any new gods.
1:23:46 the look of joy that Matt has when Laura said to keep explaining is a perfect example of good player and DM situational awareness and the recognition for pointing it out

Fjord and Avantika (Travis and Matt) Yasha and Beau (Travis and Marisha) Fjord and Jester (Travis and Laura) Let's face it, everyone just wants Travis, even if he's not playing his own characters.
@@chesh05 a shipper is someone who is a fan of a certain relationship, or wants these two characters to have one. It's basically saying that Travis is hoping Beau and Yasha will get together and gets super hyped when they do something cute or flirty together. I am really sad that it did not work becouse it woulda have been amazing! But at the same time I am glad that it did not work becouse then Beau would have died.
@@tkthetank It was a small barrel. To be fair, sometimes Matt has a tendency to scale AC's and DC's as characters level and have more bonuses, but I feel it was reasonable this time.

If Caduceus had been one level higher, he’d have blight as a domain spell. It would auto-deal 64 points of necrotic damage to a plant creature if it failed a CON save (with disadvantage).

@@sedona3663 same! I listen to it as a podcast mainly, but the downside is I break down in laughter at the most hilarious parts and have to pause my workout but oh well, worth it
The spell does state you can choose your targets, and Matt's argument for using the first roll for the abomination was that it didn't make sense not to include it. However, whether or not it makes sense is up to the caster so Liam picking the Hydra as he said should have gone through. It was wrong of Matt to make that call the way he did to be entirely honest and the frustration on Liam's face and the fact that he kept trying to argue for his point only further reinforces this. Not to mention Liam is usually okay with taking a loss if he was wrong.
@@marcosdosdiaz8147 Liam made very valid points, and Matt was just plain wrong on how the spell worked. His only reason is "well it doesn't make sense not to include the snake guy so the character that you are playing would have done that." And Liam, the person making the decision says "I don't care about him, I use the spell that allows me to target whoever on the one." Matt just really wanted his multi attacks. So much that he changed the rules and made his player waste a third level spell.
Liam didn't specify before hand that he only wanted to include the hydra. Once the hydra succeeded the roll, only then did Liam mention that the first roll should have been for the hydra. Matt's reasoning for not using the first roll isn't a very good reason, however, he is still right to not include the roll because it was an "Oh he succeeded but I wanted this to happen but I didn't say it". Dnd is a game of chance and roleplay. You have to specify what your doing before rolls to avoid taking back what you said because the dice weren't in your favour.
Lackluster gotta just say that most of this is because Matt truly challenges them. Campaign one had a few difficulties but not as many as this one, both with story and combat tbh.
@@azuk4727 Campaign 1 I feel like the biggest challenge was their first couple chroma conclave encounters, but after that no real big big struggle until the end
@@gifdar They were Lvl 15+ for most of the campaign so its easy to feel like they weren't having trouble for the most part. However, many of them fell to complete death at least once and only kept those characters because they were able to basically teleport to their party cleric who had Resurrection. They also had really powerful equipment that gave them alot of advantages in combat, which makes me believe that Matt in this campaign is keeping magical items to a minimum to keep things balanced. To be fair, I haven't watched this campaign all the way through yet so that might change later.
Cad is often characterized as a stoner - but in the garden of hallucinogenic fruit he's stern, cautious, and thinking the most clearly about the situation. Cad isn't a stoner, he's straight-edge and high on Melora :P
I'm remembering what it was like to be a new mom and I think Laura picked a fantastic character, she gets to kind of do whatever she wants so if she's got like overly tired mommie brain she can be completely silly, and she gets to laugh like crazy or beat up shit, great way to blow off steam.
Feel like making a parody of Old Town Road now. 'Got the wizard in the back; Goblin's comin' strapped. Crossbow bolt is nocked and the warlock's prepped a Blast'

Bane carried them through this fight TBH.
CHA save. Usually it gets one or two. It's good, but it's easily flubbed, and flubbed a second time if whatever failed its save is the one that dies next turn. It's ... a bit random, basically.

I know it’s second nature to him from first campaign, but when he gets to play Yasha, he is pretty much the only one who doesn’t have to think about what he is gonna do and have a panic attack before settling on something. Fjord included haha
@@dce040186 its cause barbarian is so simple to play. You tank and deal hella damage as l9ng as you cant get close enough to hit and remember to rage amd when you can do great weapons master or reckless attack.
3:26:15 Beau already has two party members high on fruit, and she licks a poison arrow. This truly is the kind of behavior I’ve come to expect from the mighty nein…
Laura got visibly pissed as soon as Matt said "she puts her hand in your hair", starts doodling as Jester.
I think she's just so much fun in this campaign
If Caduceus had been one level higher, he’d have blight as a domain spell. It would auto-deal 64 points of necrotic damage to a plant creature if it failed a CON save (with disadvantage).
Probably they can motivate the fact he has that spell with the fact he learnt from what happened here...
@@giorgiomauceri410 Confused. THe fact is he is lvl 6 here & do not have that spell yet until he is 7 so I dont know what is it he's supposed to learn here because he don't really have access to the spell yet..? If he's level 7, as a domain spell, he'd have Blight always.
@@RukiaTaichou they mean that they could play off Cad learning that spell as a story point. Yes, he gets it anyway, but it could be interesting story wise to say that it was inspired by this battle

Thank you, person (or people) who does the closed captions (and everyone else involved with this show, for that matter).
Peace.
I love how jealous Jester gets about fjord and ivantica. I think it’s really cute lmao
But doesn't Avantica like Jhamedi though? She sees Fjord as a fellow follower of U'kotuoa. Yet it seems like Fjord is starting to have second thoughts about his patron though.
@@zacharygadzinski3147 Nope. Keep watching.
@@Catervarii Watched 49 episodes. Their time with Avanroca would be short lived.
@@zacharygadzinski3147 For sure, but Avantica definitely had the hots for Fjord.
@@zacharygadzinski3147 you ask someone if they can be trusted when you're neutral towards them by just asking them... you run your fingers through their hair and pull their face close to yours when you're flirting. Fjord knows it's flirting, that's why he keeps checking if they can be seen by the others as hes awkward af with that shit as shown with the whole shenanigans with the soft core porn book Jester was reading lol
I love how fjord kept calling Caleb Caleb and Avantika just ignored it. Philip yes
I love the brief moments when Matt goes from standing to sitting and the camera doesn’t cut in time. It’s like Matt is peeking in going “hello!”

I fucking wheezed. Sam Riegel is an American treasure.

I totally feel Liam’s pain. It’s absolutely fucking heartbreaking when your high level spells fail. You only have so many.
But it didn't fail, Matt should have used the first roll for the hydra.
Guess he really wanted his hydra's multiattacks back.
@@BearOnTheMoon Matt specifically said that the first roll was for the small snake before the roll though.
*"panicky drug trip groan"* the people who write the closed captions are incredible
Having Travis roleplay as Yasha and then say "I would like to rage" was just fantastic
*ragé
I love how the combat is way more teamwork oriented in this campaign. Calebs spells and Clays stuff as well, very cool
"Pull your weight." I didn't think it was possible but damn, Caduceus can be scary.
No Mercy Percy came out there for a second!
When did this happen? I just wanna make sure I didn't miss it
when fjord said molly instead of caduceus he whole mood dropped instantly and im sad but mostly im cackling cause everyone just went "mmmmm|
Dude, knott fucking kills me. When sam screams or acts manic I love it.
Sam definitely had acid experience in the past, best high af performance ever XD
I get the impression he's the most straight-edge there haha

As a DM myself, that “Oh, that’s not good” from Matt when Marisha just got hammered by an enemy made me snort from laughter.
I love when Matt goes all Dad mode on everyone, cracks me up every time. Especially the candy incident a couple episodes ago lol.
Marisha getting annoyed at her monk abilities is the most 5e thing ever
