- Theatre director Simon Stone deconstructs some of the common visual and audio tricks of modern theatre in this first-ever performance utilising a cast of first-time volunteer actors recruited in the days prior to TEDxSydney 2011 and rehearsed just once, the night before the event!
Simon is a writer, director and actor. After graduating from The Victorian College of the Arts, he acted in the films Jindabyne, Kokoda, Balibo, Blame and Eye of the Storm, and on stage in Benedict Andrews' Belvoir production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
In 2007 Simon founded the independent theatre ensemble The Hayloft Project. For Hayloft he wrote and directed Thyestes and The Only Child; adapted and directed The Suicide, Spring Awakening, Platonov, and one third of the multi-director project 3xSisters; and directed B.C.. In 2009 he directed his first main stage production for Belvoir, The Promise. In 2010 he was invited by newly-appointed Artistic Director Ralph Myers to become
Belvoir's Resident Director. His first production in this position was the 2011 production of The Wild Duck, which he wrote and directed after Ibsen's play of the same name. This year he will also direct Neighbourhood Watch for Belvoir and Baal, co-translated with Tom Wright, for Sydney Theatre Company and Malthouse Theatre.

the presentation is in itself an act of theatre.... i love its simplicity and how the actors act in different scenarios with the same script, this in turn taught me a lot to appreciate theatre art. :D
Facts, I’m just starting Theatre Appreciation at a uni, and this is a great intro
Its really interesting how, what begins as a simplistic demonstration of theatre practices and conventions can transform into an emotionally engaging piece of theatre. There is a moment where, despite direction from the voiceover, the scene takes shape as a distinct story.

Wow! If it can be that different on stage, imagine how differently things could have turned out for each of us within our own households and organisations (but did not turn out other than the way that they really did)? Please 'scuse me for stating the obvious here, but this is quite a scary finding. There's no telling how different lives could be, even without assuming that there could be any magic in play. Different roads that were not taken, but for which there was a momentary realistic possibility. I don't know much about theatre but can anybody come back on this 'multi-verse' thing?

It's not really satire but rather a demonstration of how small choices made on a stage or in a scene can change the entire mood and audience perspective of a theatrical production. This is a very well thought out demonstration.

I think you should appreciate the simplicity and not the lack thereof complexity here. The connotations you attached to the words 'capable of' gave rise to an expectation of refreshing potential techniques (same thing happened to me!) However, the premise of this piece stems from his opening lines when quoting Peter Brook. It is a demonstration of theatres capability to engage and evoke a response from an audience (which it does) without straying too far from minimalist techniques. -Sammy.

The most boring lot of clap trap I have ever seen or heard about the theatre. Brooks is a great director but a poor theorist of the theatre. Stone's talk is crap. TEDx has no clothes.
