It's Been 1 Year Since Mailman's Death From Heat in Texas

- It's been just over a year since postal worker Eugene Gates Junior died while delivering mail on his usual route during a hot day in Texas. His wife, Carla Gates, says she remembers the day vividly. She said Eugene didn't call her during the afternoon, as he usually does. Not wanting to bother him on his route, she says she waited. Toward the end of his shift Carla finally got a call, but it wasn't Eugene. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more.
They need air conditioning in the trucks, all that glass and metal gets extremely hot.
Meh, you get used to it. I used to work for FedEx, and it wasn't that bad.
@@flyingjew2994that doesn’t help the elder people working
Absolutely it’s ridiculous that some of the vehicles STILL don’t have AC
@@flyingjew2994do you live in extreme heat zones? Last year the realfeel got up to 130 one day, working in that kind of heat is dangerous
While it may be just fine for YOU, respectfully, ANY doctor will tell you that individual tolerances for heat can vary. It's like when people say a certain surgery was excruciating and another person will say the same surgery wasn't that painful. Also, many factors such as age, genetics, body chemistry, and variables such as humidity, clothing, hat(no hat), etc impact this as well. It's like saying you like hummus & assuming because you do, everyone does and should.
The USPS cars need to be updated asap 😢
Agree 3:44
Well they refuse to buy air-conditioned cars they just want those metal boxes on wheels
@@genergarcia1943 they’re vans
Never will happen corps love swimming in blood money
So sad that he worked for the post office 34 years and never got a chance to retire or enjoy his later years. As a retired military guy we sometimes think we can endure any situation. Rest in peace fellow vet.
And nothing has changed. Nothing to protect employees.
And the employees didn't demand change
Where is personal responsibility? I know when in the heat you drink more fluids.
@@beth5050same the trucks AC dont work at all
@@beth5050sameYou must've missed the part where his wife said her husband kept a cooler full of bottles of water...
NO DOORS, AIR CONDITIONING, OR HEAT!!! DISGRACEFUL AND DISGUSTING TO THE EMPLOYEES & FAMILIES!!!
They don't have AC?!.. WOW 😳
@@DanYah85 I bet the shiny new war trucks in Ukraine have them.
@@DanYah85. Not in ant delivery trucks.
Is there really no ac in these postal trucks here in texas? I didnt know. These poor people😢😢. We need to inform our local and state representatives to fix this asap or be replaced
I felt really bad for him after that incident back in 2023..
Rest in peace❤
She has the most lovely voice. So so sorry for your loss, I hope they can fix the temperature for the postal workers in the future. It’s insane that they have self driving cars, but not an air-conditioned vehicle for workers.
My husband is a postal worker here in Texas, this enrages me to no end that the post office STILL does next to nothing to protect their workers during these hot summer months
He looked like a very dear man.
Worker safety has to be the number one priority.
Government worker safety is number 1.
When I worked for UPS, they supplied us with free water and ice for coolers. Now, they will finally update the trucks with air conditioning. In the year 2024, no outdoor service combating the heat shouldn't have air conditioning.
25 years at ups not 1 truck has air
And do you know why? WORKER UNIONS! They threatened to go on a massive strike and made a deal and air conditioning was included.
@@dougnoel3745Not yet
Still no air bud… just free water
Why is the usps still using those old small white trucks from the 1930’s that have no AC in them ??? the usps needs to modernize their vehicle fleet for the 21st century.
Blame Dejoy he is the one preventing the updates
Truth 🤦♀️
This is such a devastating story , I remember when this happened , all those years working for the post office and this happened . I’m so sorry for his wife and family 😢
So sad. Please stay safe everyone it is advised that this week will be in the 110s
I'm so sorry for your loss, nice lady.
He seemed like a wonderful person 😢.
I give my mailman 2 bottles of cold water on hot days. One is frozen and the other bottle is ice cold. He does several routes a day. And I put snacks in the cooler also.
Rest In Power Brotha!
My husband is a mail carrier in CA. Trucks have no a/c. It’s been over 110 the last week and will continue this week. USPS doesn’t care! I’m very worried about him. He has to work 12 hr shifts due to other people calling out.
I'm guessing there's not a power source (like where a car's cigarette lighter is) to run a fan or mini "swamp cooler" from. I'd have like 10 rechargeable fans clipped on, all over inside the mail truck if I was him.
My thoughts and prayers for your continued healing.
You think company’s care? Nah they don’t and never do. All they want is you get it done fast that’s all!!
God bless the mailman in Heaven for the hard work he has done. Thank you for your service, brother. Protect the mail couriers and others who work outside the hot weather.
This is why delivery trucks need air conditioning.
May he continue to rest peacefully 🕊️
Delivery jobs should not deliver in hot weather
Delivery vechlies need ac
So we should just wait until winter?
@@pennsylvaniacoachlines_fanpage just skip the 3 digit day and on to the next
With your logic they shouldn’t deliver in the winter either because theres a chance to slide on ice then crash and die or get stuck in the snow and be stranded and die or freeze to death. So only in the spring and fall? All they gotta do is get ac in the trucks.
@@pennsylvaniacoachlines_fanpageno because then there might be ice so no winter either according to this guy 😂
So sad! Those postal and delivery people work hard! Sorry to his wife and his family for their loss. 😢
RIP🙏🕊
I am so sorry. My sincere condolences 😢❤🙏 RIP
My sincere condolences to his widow. May he continue to rip.😔🕊️❤️
RIP🙏🏻… working conditions need to improve
Texas heat is brutal. So sad that happened to him
this is why mail carriers need to be able to have air conditioned trucks, not have to wear long clothes, etc. it’s very sad. or even. having mail not be delivered on dangerously hot days.
So sorry for the loss of this man.🙏🙏🙏
I remember this story. So tragic 💔
RIP 🙏☝️
Im so sorry for your loss ❤
I’m so sorry for you and your family! I admire you efforts toward attempt to advocate for greater awareness and expectations in areas of the extreme heat that TEXAS HAS! ADMIRING YOUR ACTION GIVEN YOUR OWN Grief. May he rest in peace. May your memories bring you gratitude and JOY🙏✨❣️Thank you both for your service!
Sad to hear that he died on the same as beryl hit us today. He and the others killed in the heat shall rest in peace.
Sad 😢
My most sincere condolences. Praying for you 🙏🏻
I'm so very sorry...my deepest condolences 🙏
So sad. Condolences to the widow of the late Mr. Gates. And R.I.P. to him.
This is why they have "island time", It's just to damn hot to work, especially not quickly.
Sometimes at Amazon they gave us energy popsicles, but they also always had big packs of water bottles.
Tragically, horrifically SAD STORY! 😔 😢
YES there definitely HAS to be something done... SOONER rather than later!
Thank You for sharing your story of your wonderful husband & his (😮lethal) dedication❤
It’s been like that ever since beginning of time, most have fans that do not work, bring your cooler with cold water and ice.
Heartbreaking 💔
This is why they need Air Conditioned trucks RIP. His death still made me tear up since his death couldve been avoided if he was given something to cool down while sitting in a rolling oven. *I mean the truck can get really hot in the heat which is why I called in a rolling oven*
I am sending out my thoughts and prayers and love to his family and friends I am really! So very sorry for your loss
😢💔 He is gone way to soon he is gone but he will never be forgotten
So sorry for her, my mom was at the post office for 34 years
Why can't postal delivery carriers be exempt from delivery on 3digit temp days???
The post office believes in delivering mail regardless of conditions.
@@grafando Risking the lives of their employees...how sad for those employees. 😢😥
So Sorry, My God! Condolences and Prayers ❤🙏❤
so touching❤💔
Not just outdoors but also inside as well because alot of warehouses get very hot quickly. People can pass out from heat exhaustion. Very dangerous . Theses companies need to be held accountable.
GOD Bless His Wife I know what it is to be a widow I'm keeping her in my prayers🙏
GOD Bless His Soul Cares All Passed Home At Last Forever To Rejoice He Is At Total Peace 🕊🕊🕊
This is so sad 😢
Heavenly Father rest his soul.
They need ACs now in those trucks. no fan is helping a lot in this heat. Especially when they have to walk to delivery mail down the street. Sorry RIP

I'm sorry for your loss, my mom worked @ Usps for 36 years.. and I know it gets tough out there for them.

This is ridiculous and completely avoidable. The rare case where she should Sue.

Pretty accurate intro. Talking on busy days is annoying af God rest his soul 🕊️ I wish it would’ve been a normal busy day for him 🙏🏾

my sister use to be a mail carrier but she used a normal car to deliver the mail! in my town i never seen a real mail carrier truck before they just use real cars? maybe its a small town thing?
So sad
It's ridiculous how little those boxes have no air conditioning.
😢😢😢😢 so sad...
What is crazy is that he more than likely was prolonging retiring until he met his full retirement age which typically is 65-67 years of age. I work for SSA so I'm aware that the people would rather make it to their full retirement age so they don't get penalized on their benefits which is sad anyone has to do that
Poor guy
R.i.p. kind sir
Rest in piece sir
RIP 🕊️
This is horrible! So sad and unnecessary.
I own a cleaning company and I worry that one of these days this will happen to me in one of these houses that refuse to have a/c in their homes
This mailman should of been giving ice cold water Long breaks
Rip🕊️😭❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
With the millions the postal services, UPS, Fedex companies need to be held liable and work to prevent putting their workers in such dangerous conditions. RIP Eugene Gates Junior. A life gone too soon.
You know what Joe ? How about stoping charging us so much on taxes . Perhaps we could take off more often specially during hot days …. Or we could make our job more comfortable!
Rip
RIP 🙏🏿
Just think about those folks picking melons and onions in Texas, i did that for a summer in Texas back in the lat 80s
no one got his reboot??
I heard that next year, they’re gonna add air conditioners in Indian trucks.

Wow one year already?!

My brother Hugh knew him, spoke with him on a few occasions. My brother hugh works in the same city but a different dept.
USPS: "Yes, very sad... anyway."

Omg! It happens

Poss work 6a-3p on hot days. UNF We NEED LAWS 2 Protect ppl working in inclement weather. 🥺Smh America do Better.
US mail and USPS trucks have been so outdated using the same models since the 90s, with no radio or AC in the trucks/vehicles.
I remember once when I was carrier they used to say if you can’t make it back before 430 pm to call I did at one point and they just said to keep on going and I didn’t finish my route till 630 pm that day to make this story short management could have cared less about me at that point so the next day I called in sick 😂
So let me guess, she is going to sue?
