I really enjoyed this. I am not a jazz drummer but an ex punk drummer but I followed very easily tapping away on my knees. I will say though I used to play the RLL at speed and I purloined it after hearing John Bonham on Dazed and Confused and there began my lifelong relationship of appreciating John Bonham, stealing simple ideas and adding gravitas to punk songs. It was only years later listening to people like Elvin Jones, Max Roach and Art Blakey that I started to think here is where the Bonham style comes from in many ways for example if you listen to Fool on the Hill and then listen to Bernard Purdie but when I listen to John Bonham now the drummer that I think influenced him was Dave Brubeck's drummer Joe Morello. All of a sudden Bonham's style starts to become clear which for a drummer is fantastic but I had to start listening to jazz to understand it. It is no surprise that all those late 60's and 70's drummers like Bonham, Ian Paice, Ginger Baker, Phil Collins and Mitch Mitchell were brilliant but they also all came from jazz before switching to rock.

Mike, this is one of the cleanest, visual and audio examples I've seen of swing rhythm on drums. I only wish you had added the kick back in at the end! I have a student who is learning swing rhythm on piano, and when he hears drums, he can't separate the different components to hear where the downbeats are. I think this video will help! Thank you!

This is one of my favorite drum videos. It really teaches the basics. I enjoyed the break down of the ride cymbal and the tableture helped as well. it makes it so easy to count. It's cool to know you can apply the bass drum on every count. It enriches the jazz sound. Thanks for this upload.

That's seems simple but it's not... It's easy to think that You are playing a triplet on the Second and forth notes on the ride but You dont, actually. Theres some talking about speed but speed doesnt matter... You must have control and feel and that guy have a lot of this... Nice lesson!
