  • In this adventure we went to explore one of the lost cities of the Mayans on the banks of the Usumacinta River, a rarely visited archaeological zone, which you can only reach by walking through the jungle where there is no road.
"Piedras Negras" is an archaeological zone of the Mayan culture located in the jungle of Guatemala within the "Sierra Del Lacandón" reserve.
The buildings on the site are not fully restored, almost everything is covered, and some buildings were unearthed between 1931 and 1939 when the Guatemalan government did research with the University of Pennsylvania.
It was possibly the largest city in the Peten area of Guatemala (north of the country, bordering Tabasco Mexico and Belize on the right side.) The grandeur of its buildings such as the Acropolis, a large number of stelae and engravings demonstrate the development that this city had and it is therefore considered the most important in this area.
Many of the stelae with beautiful designs were removed during investigations and are currently in the anthropology museum of Guatemala.
This archaeological site contains the tomb of "Tatiana Avenirovna Proskouriakoff" 1909-1985 (in Russian Татья́на Авени́ровна Проскуряко́ва) who did important work as an epigrapher and archaeologist of the Mayan culture at this site, deciphering Mayan symbols.
In 1944 she published her first article as a researcher, related to Mayan writing: An Inscription on a Jade Probably Carved at Piedras Negras
