Fun fact: Half-Life: Decay (the co-op spinoff included in the PS2 port) actually includes a mission where you play as two vortigaunts on a mission to Black Mesa to get the Xen crystals back!

I really loved how they fleshed out the world with the extra dialog and things in this game. Just a great way to kind of re-play an old masterpiece. Will definitely play through several more times.

There's a Half-Life mod called Point of View where you play as one of the aliens.

Love this nice surprise boyos! Just dusted off the Index and have been playing through Alyx again, along side my current playthrough of Black Mesa. Definitely helps the mild-to-moderate pandemic depression. H-L is my happy place for sure.

Black Mesa is Half-Life the way I remember it being when I first booted it up in 1998. Its Half-Life with rose colored glasses, and I mean all of that in the best possible way. Its become the default way that I "go back" and play Half-Life. In many ways I envy anyone that has their first Half-Life experience in Black Mesa. A game that truly changed the trajectory of the entire industry re-imagined and remasted by its own fan base for posterity.

I'm with Danny on this. I enjoyed Quake a lot and played it to death but Half-life came along and a new obsession was born. It was my summer for several years in a row. It was my favourite FPS, and now Black Mesa is. Such a good game. I keep thinking that the one thing I'd love to have would be a mod for BM that lets you just explore the BM Research facility, pre-disaster. The sheer scale of the environment is still amazing to me.

All this Half Life talk is wonderful. I flip flop between it and Deus Ex as my all time favorite. And speaking of, since he's going to have to practically dissect it, I cannot wait for Frank to play and talk about Deus Ex. It was bonkers at the time, and while the story was scarily prescient looking back, it was also just dumb funny here and there too. I played it a couple years ago and still love it.

.....Was about to do something else. Danny uploads something Half-Life related....... well, there goes my original plans out the window.

So, fun thing... in the original half-life the controls for the long jump were only taught to you... in the tutorial level. That isn't mandatory.
    Yeeeaaah :p
So you didn't miss it Frank !

I thought you are using Lakey Inspired as the intro theme, just Shazammed it, it's George Georgia - Silver Sunrays

31:09 That is not true at all at that point. Duke Nukem 3D from 96 did pretty much exactly that. Minus episode 2, the main appeal were seeing ordinary locations.
But then in 97 Goldeneye happened. Everything was grounded. There were military facilities, bunkers, labs, scientists... most things we see in Half-Life had already been seen in Goldeneye a year prior.

Always love the podcast. I love the half life doc and the history of the series. I've never beaten either game. I'm a few hours in on pc the source version not gold lol. I've had Half life 2 for years on original Xbox hut barely played it I chose Halo 2 haha. I'm about half way through Half life 2 on orange box for Xbox 360.

I was the opposite lol, Half Life 2 was my intro to fps games, only finished Halo 2 literally a month ago along with most of the rest of the series after falling in love with Infinite's multiplayer 😅
I've played up to Reach so far, and I have to say 2 is my favourite. Arbiter is best boi 😄

@@lizardlegend42 Hell yeah! Halo 2 is the GOAT of the franchise. Half Life 2 is a good intro to the genre.

I'm a tad worried about this documentary, just because as a fan of Black Mesa, I do think it is a far from perfect remake of Half Life and even loses sight of some intentional simplicities of the design of Half-Life 1. While Black Mesa displays an amazing achievement from the dev team, there was plenty of padding or fat that could have been cut from their campaign, especially in Xen. I simply hope that the documentary does not treat Black Mesa as a superior version of Half Life and rather a fascinating fan made project which provides a new interpretation of the game and tries drastically changing some mechanics from the original. Although of course Im aware this documentary will be more about Black Mesa, since most of the Half Life subject was covered in its own documentary, I just hope that at least some criticism from its community and from Half-Life fans is acknowledged.

I honestly kinda hate the discourse around Black Mesa when it's framed as just some touch up to Half-Life. It's not. You can love it or hate it but there are enough significant changes to be entirely different games. The way people talk about Half Life makes me feel like there's basically zero appreciation for what makes it mechanically unique from other shooters, honestly kinda bums me out.

Not just that, but the fact that it's so good- a fan game that took forever and it comes out and it's actually better than the original? Such a strong effort. Compared to a total bomb like Fallout the Frontier or Hunt Down the Freeman or any other cheapo piece of rubbish on Steam made by people who have lost all sense of perspective it's in another league. A different sport even. People don't bring that up enough either I think.
