    This guy has to be one of the most humble game devs out there. He's a bloody genius and he doesn't know it. I was late to the party with Obra Dinn as I played it right at the end of 2019 but it was easily my favourite game of last year. I urge anyone who hasn't played it to support this fella and give it a go.

    my favourite part in the obra dinn was when the gunners were getting attacked by a tentacle in the gun deck and the cannon was accidentally pointed at two characters but in the next scene when the cannon blasted, you could only see one person's upper body vaporized. Where did the other guy go? listen to the audio again and you'll hear a scream that becomes faint pretty quickly then I realized, a person without a head can't scream.

    Danny I understand why you have a separate podcast channel but I really do think your views would increase dramatically if you posted these on your main channel. They're great pieces of work and it saddens me they're going unnoticed by a lot of people that would like to hear them.

      I really appreciate the thoughtfulness. From my perspective the podcast is growing pretty well in it's audio form, and ultimately I've never cared too much about views. I rather not spam the main channel with 4 extra videos a month then get a few extra thousand views. Hopefully this channel will grow over weeks, months and years - but my barrier for success is the quality of the work, and how much the Patrons enjoy it, rather than pure views.

    First podcast I've listened to, and is an interview to Lucas Pope.
    When I first played Obra Dinn, I thought the voice acting was AMAZING. I'm Argentinian, studying to become an English teacher, so I must attend to phonetics and phonology classes, and we study different English accents from different locations, and I remember saying (more than once) "This can't be someone important, he's a shipman, he's got such a cockney accent".
    Great interview, I loved it.

    Teleporting book would have wrecked this game. I stopped playing WoW when it turned from an open world to sitting in your home town queuing up for instances. Being able to immerse yourself in the world is key and you cannot do that if you are constantly pulled out of it.
    Good call, great game, and a great way of doing the most with the limits that a one man team imposes.

      Definitely agree you can walk the entire ship in under 30 seconds so teleporting would be really pointless here.

    When I finished (Return of the Obra Dinn) I checked the credits to see how many people did it. When I saw that one person did everything including graphics, soundtracks and programming, I was shocked.
    Did lucas literally created everything or he hired some technical people to do his game and then payed them ?

    • @Anodoni
      @Anodoni 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He did everything himself! He even painstakingly redrew Edward Spratt's sketches in the game to make sure they were as authentic looking to sketches from that time period as possible.

      One question that is killing me. Even if he has the graphics and programming skills for that, how can make such perfect soundtracks !! Music is another domain by itself.

      SPOILER WARNING
      If it's what my wife and I ran into while playing, it's the tattooed guy who gets torn in half by the kraken. After seeing that memory, you see the Bosun's death, and he says "Where's my Frenchman?" and someone responds "Your mate was torn apart."
      Logically, we thought that the only "torn apart" memory we'd seen thus far would be the Bosun's mate, so we pegged the tattooed guy as Charles Miner. We later learned that was incorrect. It's the only misleading, out-of-sequence inference that we made in the game, and it was within the first 60-90 minutes.

    • @shnewmy
      @shnewmy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlexHaitz Spot on! I had the tattooed guy there for the longest time and was getting frustrated until I slowly started realising that it had to be someone different and I just blindly changed the tattooed guy to the guy from New Guinea just because I figured this person would stereotypically have tattoos and it worked out. But that Frenchman was one of the last identities that I got because it definitely was a Red Herring!

    • @TheOrian34
      @TheOrian34 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AlexHaitz Somehow that never even was a possibility for me, I recall the Bosun is on the deck and calling for him already while the other dude got torn apart.
      It was impossible it would be him since he was just right near while the guy died so it wasn't the one he searched for.

    Personally I couldn't get into Obra Dinn because of the difficulty of remembering so many small details at once which bummed me out because you can tell looking in from the outside that there's something special about the game. This was a fun listen (Lucas Pope is very well spoken!), because I feel it gave a bit of a glimpse on that specialness from the inaccessible inside, if that makes sense. Thanks for making this podcast

    Ok, so...I am very much looking forward this game (when it will make its way to either PS4 or linux) but now I'm very worried that I'll have big problems figuring out who is who, since English is not my mother tongue. Opinions?

    • @aidanator8008
      @aidanator8008 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You should be fine. While accents do help in identifying each character, I don't believe there are any situations where it's absolutely required. However, it'll probably be useful to be able to distinguish voices from one another.
