It's shocking that more ranches haven't used donkeys or llamas to protect livestock. This predator prevention has been known for decades, yet they have been seriously under-utilized. I don't agree with culling wild predators and hold those who do in disdain. If livestock predation can be prevented simply by introducing bad asses, that's the way it should be.

Coyotes were RE-introduced into my farming region near Lake Erie over 35 yrs ago . . . Without much 'notice or debate'.
4 years ago we had to go to war with them (and our own local, state and federal agencies) because of them.
One neighbor gave up his sheep herd after 15 years of loosing battles and another 50% loss of spring lambs.
Dogs, cats, chickens, even foals and calves have been attacked or lost.
Now it's been confirmed there's wolf/coyote hybrids out there.

The best method is deterrence so these donkeys are a great idea. Killing coyotes (about 1 a minutes is killed in the US) actually increases their population as they breed and have more offspring as a response to culling. In coyote packs that aren't hunted, only the top mating "alpha" pair breed within a complex social structure. Culling coyotes breaks apart the social hierarchy and makes more breeding pairs as a response. They end up breeding twice as fast or more. It's 2022 and "educated", regional governing bodies still haven't figured this the fck out.

I had issues with coyotes, foxes and other preditors getting my livestock. I brought in a jack donkey and he is very territorial and protects the farm. But all donkeys dont make good guard animals. If you see a donkey who accepts canines they will not guard. Donkeys have evolved to hate canines and even cats are not tolerated. But unfortunately or fortunately how ever you want to call it, that fiestyness was bred out of them. So just adding a donk as a guardian because it's a donkey and all donkeys protect is not true. I would say one out of 10 will have that natural hatred towards canines still in them. Adopting wild burros from the BLM would be your best bet finding a guardian. Not ones from breeders who bred that meaness out.

There is no such thing as coyote proof. I've seen donkeys grab coyotes and shake violently until dead.

How long do americans need to get it, that donkeys can help? In third world countries it's usual to use donkeys as livestock guards.

Can't shoot them, what about bow & arrow? A good bowman should be able to target the lead and let them deal with losing its leader. Just a thought...

If the donkeys aren't enough, consider getting a Kangal or an Ovcharka (Caucasian Shepherd), they're bred to keep wolves away from livestock and they're fierce protectors!

Large Sheepdogs are definitely good, but don't underestimate standard to large-sized adult donkeys as guard animals. They're very territorial, and can be especially so towards canines; and will both bite viciously and slash at coyotes with their hooves, charging into fighting them, and intent in chasing them off; even going for the coyote's neck for the kill, stomping them to death, and to the point of flinging the coyote around to make sure it's dead. They're so determined to beat coyotes up that experienced donkey owners advise NOT getting in their way until they calm down on their own.

what a shame that humans have encroached on the majority of the land that makes it impossible for the coyotes to find their own natural source of food. a definite imbalance has occurred.

It's not do much that predators can't find food. It's just more convenient to get groceries in a barnyard where prey is fenced in and there for the taking. And since the last three meals were so easy, they keep coming back like absolutely anyone else would do, like birds who regularly visit feeders. Coyotes are just trying to survive. And if you present them with a banquet behind a fence, they'll keep coming back until the food is gone.

The only humane way of doing this is to catch the coyotes and tickle them to death.

Donkeys are not a new approach. This is the oldest domesticated animal, and farmers have been using them for centuries. Can “news” media get anything right? (That was a rhetorical question. We all know the answer).
