A forgotten gem called Black Tiger, a Capcom arcade title that never really became a big deal on home consoles had a similar ‘whip’/mace mechanic even though it was pretty different otherwise, being more fantasy themed. However, the cover art for Black Tiger is strikingly similar to Castlevania’s. I wonder who got there first! This was wonderful nostalgi.
Actually, if you have an SNES/NSFC, you can play Black Tiger on there, and it is also a surprisingly good port of the game....wait, that was Magic Sword, sorry.

I'm currently trying to speedrun Castlevania. Completed Castlevania 1 and 2, currently on 3 which gives me constant headache and rage fuel due to how hard it is. Aria and Dawn of Sorrow were released on java mobiles too (though very different games than in Nintendo handhelds), in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Grimoire or Souls was also only released as a closed beta on 2018, having it's softlaunch on 2019 (Canada only) and official release on 2021 for Apple Arcade. There's also Castlevania: Moonlight Rhapsody, which was also a closed beta in 2020 (China only). In 2024 the Castlevania Dominus Collection was released, and it came with a new game: Haunted Castle Revisited, a remake of the original arcade title.

I think 3d castlevania is fine its just they did not do the whip right until Los. I mean just grab a whip and use it. Its main perk beside range is the attack arch. Unlike other weapons you dont need much accuracy training with a whip.
I wish konami just revisit this.... and give us castlevania origin., The first dracula.... The first version of the castle how and who help crafted it. What was the begining like, vs how it turn into twisted darkness due to death. How belmonte family was not chosen but actual fact, cursed and how they became the true bloodline to have the ability to kill dracula. There's so much story to dive in.
Curse of Darkness and the DS trilogy (as well as Aria of Sorrow on GBA) are the absolute best Castlevania games. SOTN is amazing and is the most influential of them all but the DS trilogy is just a much better improved version of SOTN. Bloodstained is an honourable mention. It's even better than the DS trilogy but since it's not Castlevania I wouldn't count it despite being made by the same man.
