I remember the acid reflux thing from a Japanese study, showing that the reason of the acid goes back up, is because the sphincter from the esophagus into the stomach doesn't close. It doesn't close because the pH of the stomach is too high, so the liver just keeps dumping bile. The reason lemon juice and vinegar work so well, is because it quickly drops the pH of your stomach, and that sphincter closes. Problem solved.

I've been fasting for over 2 years now, and noticed constipation/diarrhea (for me) is usually an indicator that my fiber intake was too low. Ever since I paid more attention to adding plenty of fiber to my meals, my digestion issues are completely resolved.
That's great! I stopped all fiber and my issues resolved. I never burp or have gas. No painful stools. I mean absolutely zero fiber. It's great! Funny how all people are so different
Same here, I actually moved to Europe and started eating fruit every single day, I can't go without it and I absolutely reversed my years by a decade. Combination of fibre and fasting boosted my energy levels and fasting alone completely fixed my sleeping schedule and alertness.
The salt definitely helps the headaches. And for me it works instantly- the headache goes away in 5 min after I add a Hymalayan salt to my water. Thank you, Dr.Fung!
Salt helps us retain a healthy amount of water. If we don't have enough, we can get severely dehydrated and our brain literally shrinks, causing negative pressure. PS: In this way, it is similar to caffeine, in which going cold turkey may cause a change in brain pressure that results in headaches.
@@CarbageMan , thank you for explaining the effect. I wasn’t sure why it helped but when i got the headaches I was like let’s give it a try and amazingly it worked. Also, i tend to drink lots of coffee and I just saw it from someone’s post that coffee during fast can cause headaches more severely than if you just drink water.

The best adjustment that I made was instead of adding salt and potassium to my water, I just take a 3/4 teaspoon of pink salt in the morning and/or evening. I found that the chalky taste of water after three days would make any further fasting a big challenge. By taking the salt directly, I can continue drinking fresh water all day without the hesitation to stay hydrated. I can do five day fasts without batting an eye. I dropped 30lbs in five weeks at the end of last year. I've just initiated a four week regiment. I should drop another 20 or so before the end of March. I plan to be under 200lbs by June, and well on my way.

I have been doing intermittent fasting for over a year, the least is 16 hours, but I will do 17, 18 and 19 hours, no issues as mentioned. I did my annual checkup with the lab taking blood today, and the nurse asked if I fasted, I said yes, she said how long, I replied 19 hours, she then said why so long, dont you get headaches. I told her it is healthy to fast, she thinks it is crazy fasting.
Thanks for your help to understand all processes of prolonged fasting. I just resolved my headache very fast with littlebit of salt, vinegar and water.

The stages of fasting are so interesting!! From headaches to irritability in the first 18-24hrs, then at the 36hr mark the energy!! Hi Dr. Fung, thanks for promoting IF. I have been on it from the past 3 months and doing my regular exercises. Feel good about that, my blood sugar has reduced and i am getting off medication one by one. Lost more than 5 kgs, dont feel hungry etc., but 15 days back, while walking, felt crippling pain in my leg, thought had sprained my leg or fractured. But, no, nothing of the kind. Apparently my uric acid has gone up and causing the pain as it is crytalizing in the bones othetwise gout. Have increased my water intake and now it is slowly decreasing, but may take time. I wanted to go off IF, but then thought better of it and continued. Can you please throw some light on this issue? There are several videos on TH-cam about fasting and uric acid, but wanted your opinion on the same. Thanks.
One of the wonderful changes with fasting for me has been feeling a little cooler. I am always hot which indicates my sugar is high. When I fast for over 12 hours, I can feel that my sugar is much better.
I've had the follow issues and this is what I think is the root cause and a solution. 1. Headaches, especially in the first two days. I think this is lack of fasting practice and being hooked on sugar. I think my metabolism is not use to fasting and so doesn't properly get stored glucose into my body. Solution: Obviously, get added sugar out of your diet first. This takes about eight weeks. Next: work your way up to fasting more than 24 hours. With practice these issues go away or are greatly reduced. I almost never have fasting headaches any more or even hunger that lasts more than 30 minutes. 2. Low blood pressure when on BP meds. After 2-3 days of fasting my BP meds can drop my BP lower, quicker than usual because I am taking them on an empty stomach and my body is not use to having low (i.e. closer to normal!) BP. My heart rate also goes up, which makes me anxious. Solution: just take it easy the first couple of hours after you take your BP meds. At some point, you have to stop taking them I suppose. YEH! 3. Start to get weak and dizzy after 4-5 days of fasting. I think this is due to Insulin Resistance. My BG is lower than my "normal" 12 hour fasting level, but still plenty high enough for a healthy body. But because of Insulin Resistance my body isn't taking the glucose up any more. Solution: I haven't found one yet. I am concerned about pushing past this weakness without a doctor monitoring me. I am hoping that repeating 4 day fasts I will slowly get rid of my insulin resistance and then I can try fasting more than 5 days. It is a bit of a goal for me, not for any health reasons, but having a fasting BG below 70 and being able to fast more than 5 days is a sign that my metabolism and insulin resistance is back to a healthy range. If I'm full of BS, please correct me Dr. Fung. Following your advise is literally saving my life.
An observation about fasting: You still have to be careful about what you eat. Even though I fasted throughout this past holiday season I gained back 10 lbs of the 14 lbs I'd lost and am still having a hard time getting it back off. It's quite discouraging.
I can't find any information on your channel or others about nausea around the 48hr mark and afterwards (no heartburn at all, just insane nausea leading to vomiting regardless how much water I drink or don't drink), and mouth pain when breaking the fast with any food. There are hundreds of people on Reddit complaining about these issues due to prolonged fasts. Why does it happen and how to avoid it? I broke my fast with fruit (which I threw up within minutes due to nausea), then I ate a salad with a bit of soft bread but this caused intense pain on the roof of the mouth. I kept drinking a lot of water and started the next day with a very juicy mango, requires no chewing but my tongue muscles near the throat feel like they're cramping up and it becomes nearly impossible to swallow. I've only felt something similar when I had covid. But I know this isn't covid, this issue was happening before and after covid whenever I break a prolonged fast.
Your body senses a threat and conserves energy. I turn up the heat if I feel cold (and I usually keep the house and office in "conservation" mode, but not on a fast.)
It's a controversial topic. My personal experience was that I had a coronary artery calcium score of "2" (obviously not a five-alarm emergency, but not zero) and now my score is zero. I took the tests three years apart, the first about a year after I started fasting and eating keto. Some people may claim that shedding calcium could even be dangerous, but according to Dr Agatston, the authority on the topic, what's desired is to keep the score from going up. He believes that's a win, and that it reduces your risk of (that type of) heart disease.

I've been having a fasting lifestyle for around 3 yrs now. And last night i took magnesium on an empty stomach thinking that might be helpful. But unfortunately that made me have diarrhoea today 😅. So don't try it with magnesium 😂😂😂 otherwise it's the best healing tool ever! Thanks Dr Fung for saving us! 😊😊
I spend every other week out of town with work and do 48 hour fasts during that time. I've had great results with weight loss! However, I've noticed over the last couple months that within an hour of breaking my fast, I have to rush to the bathroom and have at least a large BM, often very watery. My theory is that the mass of the recent meal is somehow pressuring the colon to empty. With that fasting pattern, I usually go 2 days without a BM until the next meal. In about a year, I've lost 80 lbs!
❤Hi Dr Fung. I love you, your videos & all the knowledge you share! I need a little more help with exactly what to eat/drink for full nutrition on OMAD & how to safely do a 3-5-14 day or more fast to heal from disease? How do I get an appointment with you??? Thank you so very much! ♥️
Hi Nancy. I fast regularly both TRE and extended fasts. When I don't welcome weight loss, I eat more often (still not more than 3 times a day), eat more fats and protein (whole foods of course) and also exercise. Exercise builds my appetite helping me to eat more than I might otherwise.
Yeah it’s so weird, every single “diet” I tried, made me miserable. Constant cravings, intense hunger, dizziness, mood swings, irritability, feeling cold all the time, are just one of many negative experiences I’ve had. And it’s almost impossible to stick to, and when I did find the discipline to stick to it, the weight loss is temporary and will always go back up after. None of the diets were doable for life. I attempted fasting a couple of times, but this is like the 7th time in the past 4 years of me doing intermittent fasting, and my body finally adapted. Now I know it’s not willpower or lack of discipline, because I can eat once or twice a day, never ever feel hungry, almost never have a craving, and the weight comes down automatically. I also feel like I’m beginning to increase physical activity because I feel like moving around more. My dog is happy with that, but so am I. I now have the energy to get out of bed, do some household chores, and feel good by going to bed around 11pm. Waking up isn’t a pain in the ass like it used to and I feel more comfortable being social instead of locking myself inside for 6 days a week. I confirm everything that Jason Fung has said so far, it’s all true, and it all works! I eat less and less, so my stomach is shrinking, my body craves veggies now, and I eat less carbs and more fat than before, I’m happy and I’m anxiously anticipating the results in 6 months from now 🙏🏼

Some may want/need to watch more of his videos before you fast. It all depends on how strict you want to be on a fast. I still have my one cup of morning coffee when fasting. I don’t get all crazy about it. That’s just me though and yes, I’ve lost weight
Same here - not having my tea and coffees in the morning, with milk, is a deal breaker for me! I think I've lost a little weight - I don't dare weigh myself as that would REALLY get me depressed - but I do feel better when I do 16/8 so it's worth persevering! I hope I lose weight as you have - that would be WONDERFUL!!
@@andersonomo597 , 100% same. Coffe, tea, even bullet proof coffe is a go, as long as it helps to keep going through the hours. And I have the same relationship with scale - after all the work I put in working out, building muscle, eating healthy, and now fasting, when the scale doesn’t budge at all it’s very depressing and all I want to do is to throw tge towel. But then i realize how loose my pants feel and good I feel and i just tell myself that it’s worth it! The scale and my body just are playing this joke on me like saying: you won’t see your weight drop no matter how stubborn you are - we win! The only time i get my weight is when i go for my physical- and i hate stepping on the scale then cause I already know :))
@@ilonaghine9690 I've just listened to 2 REALLY interesting interviews on "The Diary of a CEO " featuring Dr Tim Spector and Dr Giles Yeo. There's so much info there about calories and blood sugar spikes and how different foods affect people differently. Highly recommend listening to both - there's nothing 'visual' in either interview so you can easily listen while doing other things. Both interviews have made me re-think how I'm eating - I'll focus more on high fiber foods, more vegetable varieties and not no-carbs but fewer carbs. Cost = ZERO, benefits = can't hurt, worth trying!! And yes, the joy of looser pants, for me that's important, not the number which will send me into a deep funk!! Best wishes for success in your efforts!!
@@andersonomo597 , thank you! Will definitely check out the interviews! Always eager to learn and improve my health. Take care,
It's a good point about coffee. If you're a coffee drinker and go cold turkey, _that_ can give you a "caffeine headache."
Yep! I remember having some of those problems. It's so true that your body adjusts! Thanks Dr. Fung for all you do 😊👍
I’m fasting almost every month, it’s the headache make me worst.
I have done extreme fasting for a week and with coffee I stretched to a month without any food.
Now I’m back again after a year without fasting.
Never felt great, your obesity code give me life🙏🏻
I've been fasting for over 2 years now, and noticed constipation/diarrhea (for me) is usually an indicator that my fiber intake was too low.

I have been experiencing headaches too when doing intermittent fasting. Will definitely try salt.
@@ilonaghine9690 You bet! I found myself more comfortable drinking the same amount of caffeine as I'm used to.
Very helpful. I didn’t attribute my insomnia and feeling wide awake and energized to fasting. Good to know.
Yes, acid stomach has been my main complaint during IF. It's good to know I'm not crazy.
Try Apple cider vinegar, a couple of Tablespoons in some water twice a day. It seems counter intuitive, but I have full blown GERD Gastric Reflux disease. And doing it for a few months actually cured my disease. So give it a try, you can thank me later!
It was the reason I had to stop my fast. I couldn't get rid of it without eating something. So painful.

Just ordered my lovely new coffee mug of yours. A constant reminder each morning not to give in! Plus after 3 wks my weight finally went down 1.5lb! I've found I'm getting less hungry now.
Thats awesome. You did 5 day fast every week for 5 weeks? Did you eat the other two days each week?
@@momohbanya2296 Yes, I ate at noon on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. It would be three large meals in a 48 hour period, then my next meal was the following Monday. I spend my winters volunteering in Brazil, so I didn't have the fast paced work of a construction site, or the bitter cold of the Canadian winter, which requires burning extra calories. The conditions were supreme, and I just stayed busy during the day to keep my mind focused.
@@momohbanya2296 Yes, I just didn't allow for any second-guessing to enter my mind. So every Monday I would break the fast at noon, and every Wednesday I had my last meal at noon. I made sure to take a half teaspoon of salt every morning, just licked it off my palm, haha, and chugged some water. I had no problems with food cravings, no problems with energy levels, and as long as I kept busy, even with simple tasks, I was able to maintain a pretty joyful experience.

Thanks so much Dr Fung. Can you please make a video explaining how long and often people in different age groups should do fasting to lose fat? 🙏
Thanks!

Love your videos Dr Fung! Thank you.
Wonderful
Today I just completed my 36 hours of fasting on the occasion of “valentines day” ❤❤
An observation about fasting: You still have to be careful about what you eat.
Even though I fasted throughout this past holiday season I gained back 10 lbs of the 14 lbs I'd lost and am still having a hard time getting it back off. It's quite discouraging.
eat real food and lower carbs and you won't have to count calories to stay fit. If you have to work to stay skinny your diet is garbage, end of story.
Thank you for the good info
Doctor Fung, please aknowledge that I know your works since 1 week only and that you are already one if idols
Nice video.Thanks.
Thanks, Dr. Fung.
Thankyou this helps greatly .
My only symptom is episodes of extreme cold. No amount of warm liquids or blankets help. Why please?
stress causes vasoconstriction and that pulls blood away from extremities
Your body senses a threat and conserves energy. I turn up the heat if I feel cold (and I usually keep the house and office in "conservation" mode, but not on a fast.)
What about metabolism? Does fasting too often/too long decrease metabolism?
Aren’t the “spikes” that are dangerous? Then why high glucose reading in the morning doesn't matter?
Hi Dr. Fung,
What effects does fasting have on atherosclerosis and heart disease? Can it possibly reverse it?
That’s a great question… I’ve wondered the same 🧐
Yes it can reverse, clearing plaque is a catabolic process and eating just makes it worse

I spend every other week out of town with work and do 48 hour fasts during that time. I've had great results with weight loss! However, I've noticed over the last couple months that within an hour of breaking my fast, I have to rush to the bathroom and have at least a large BM, often very watery. What if your bmi is good and you want to fast for health benefits. Please make a video on people that don’t want to lose weight.
You usually gain lean tissue from short fasts
Hi Nancy. I fast regularly both TRE and extended fasts. When I don't welcome weight loss, I eat more often (still not more than 3 times a day), eat more fats and protein (whole foods of course) and also exercise. Exercise builds my appetite helping me to eat more than I might otherwise.
hi
I eat less and less, so my stomach is shrinking, my body craves veggies now, and I eat less carbs and more fat than before, I’m happy and I’m anxiously anticipating the results in 6 months from now 🙏🏼
Have done a video on how fasting is different if you do not have a gallbladder? If not can you? I experience a sour gut off and on during fasting and horrible diarrhea when I start eating again.
Definitely having issues with rather hurried dashes to the bathroom, about two hours after breaking my fast. It's a bit inconvenient to say the least.
