That is awesome! I'm glad to hear that my videos have been helping you, I always try to include tips in my videos that can be applied to other videos and not just want I'm building. So I'm glad to hear that it comes across :D
the best conversion I can see.I love space marines and their machines. It pains me to see that the Marine is almost the same size as the terminator. The difference should be visible. Likewise, the drednoughty should be much larger.I increased the drednought by about half a cm. and that's enough for the model to dominate the terminators
I can see why people think its a bit off but I really like it. Also super impressed that you were able to join two totally different torso parts so seamlessly.
It put me off first time i saw it, but im liking it more the more i look at it. It looks like the old terminator artwork that put a lot of care into making them anatomically accurate. I also think the rather plain shoulder bits arent doing it any favors, changing one or both to cataphractii shoulders might make the design pop a bit more
I think it puts some people off because they're so used to the normal, squashed/hunched looking one, so when they see this one that has reasonable proportions, it's off putting
Yeh I think some extra bits and gubbinz wouldn't have gone amiss. It would have been good to do something like this but for a more distinctly styled chapter like the Space Wolves.
I go back and forth on that issue. On the one hand yes old-style Terminators did look oddly proportioned with the arms buuut to give them their due I think they were trying to make them look hunched forward under the weight of the exo-armour. In any case, we now have better options in the form of Cataphractii and Tartaros armour, or indeed the conversion up here to rehabilitate the poor old Indomitus.
i've always found the stick-thin thighs more of an eyesore than the hunched stance tbh, although both are equally impossible in terms of a human (or even transhuman) physique. nice to see that the primaris range has more realistic proportions overall anyway, it sets a good precedent for terminators and for scaling in general. firstborns are still the same height as guardsmen generally, for example, so it'd be nice if new firstborn models addressed that. pretty sure in the lore they have at least 2 feet on a regular human, and that's without armour
@@wolfgangrecordings "New" Firstborn? Don't hold your breath. The current SM Tactical squad is the last GW will ever produce is my guess, outside of old-scale Horus Heresy. EDIT: Oh wait, the new CSM are much more recent than the SM Tactical squad, and by definition are Firstborn regardless of their age so in that sense I guess they have upscaled. Pain in the arse if you wanted to make a loyalist army out of that kit though.
Its because they were supposed to look like how the Mobile Infantry Power Armour is described in the Starship Troopers books. In short, between the position it puts you in to fit in it and the extended arm length, a steel gorilla.
Some people have thrown around the idea over the years (and might have been in a book at some point?) that their arms aren't even in the armours arms, but in the chestplate, like small mechas or something. more like the torso and helmet are cockpits.
As a grey knights player, please do this. I tried to make a brotherhood champion (who has no model) but couldn’t get the arm mounted storm bolted to work right.
@@mongooseiv I'm doing something like that right now actually. What I'm doing is taking a primaris Judiciar from the Indomitus kit, giving him a different hand and some GK accessories (shield plates, holy items, etc etc...). The arm mounted storm bolter could work pretty decently with his left arm that raised forward holding the hourglass, but I decided his hip mounted pistol will do just fine. I'm going to paint him in a way where I could use him as a Brotherhood Champion or as a Judiciar. It's not a heavy conversion and is pretty simple but you could take it as far as you wanted to really.
@@PeteTheWargamer to me the difference is that the term you've got in comparison is dripping in accessories, where the conversion is a pretty basic proof of mechanics. I'd love to see the conversion with the copious amounts of battle honors and other ancillaries worthy of a first company veteran with uncounted battles behind him. I think that might bridge the gap
I really love this conversion. To help with your final statement maybe bigger shoulder pads and arms a tad higher up would help bridge the gap between your kit bashed one and the original
The arms being higher looked very odd when I tried it and really messed up the more "anatomically correct" proportioning. But, some bulkier shoulder pads might have helped.
@@PeteTheWargamer yeah keeping the arms in the same place but adding taller/thicker shoulder players would make it look more terminatory in my opinion. Awesome job though!!
Or even just present it as just a new mark of armour. But they didn't, because there needs to be this dumb plot and tech advancement after 10-some-thousand years of use.
Instead of fucking up little Timmy’s $4000 space marine army they fucked up their lore instead. Fuck, they even upscaled Chaos Marines for god sake, without putting some stupid lore reason for that.
Yapp, TBH I go with this interpretation. In my world there are no primaris. I really love the design and every time I look at some of my very few old marines I feel kinda sad for them. The Primaris minis have so much more character and give the overall space marine feel that we know from the fluff. In fact, when Primaris came out I felt love for the Astartes for the first time in my life. Kinda pitty I quit playing 40k... but I just want to have a unit of Primaris Marines. The only thing that really bothers me: Why on earth did they need so long to design a space marine that actually fits the artworks?
Love the way these guys look. All I've done to my Wolf Guard Terminators up to this point has been adding a ball of greenstuff to the waist and making their bases taller with cork. I'm definitely going to try this
I think part of the wonkyness comes from how the legs now are (relatively) slimmer than the arms rather than both being bulky, makes him look too lanky. Part of that also comes from the model being taller but not appreciably wider. Maybe something involving incorporating parts from the centurion or the closer to truescale heresy termies would help? also I think the circular plates on the legs just scream primaris and make it look less like a true scale termie and more like a primaris one (not a bad thing tho)
Great vid, and a demonstration of kitbashing. I think the issue is with the Auto-reactive Shoulder pads. On the Original Termie they are almost as high as the top of the armour, but they aren't on the conversion. It's possible that larger shoulder pads would solve this issue
that's kinda the point of truescaling though, older terminator sculpts coudn't accommodate an actual human figure inside, unless their head protruded from the top of their chest. they also have comically narrow thighs in most older sculpts (and some modern ones) and that's something that tends to be addressed with truescaling alongside just making the model taller & bulkier
Yeah, the shoulders are the big disconnect for me too. I wonder if just using a green stuff spacer to slightly raise the position of the shoulder pads maybe 2mm would be enough to help. Using the Roman Legion style pads of the Horus Heresy terminators might be another option to raise the height but disguise the fact that that's been done.
Not played or looked at 40k in over 20 years but recently had loads of painting and kitbash vids come up on TH-cam and your kill team vids and this have made me want to start up again.
I haven't properly played 40k for a good while now but I really enjoy the hobby side of things. It's fun and rewarding so I'd highly recommend giving it a go again, even if you just paint up a single squad.
... yeah, I think the whole "Terminator" design needs an overhaul for Primaris, keeping the "bulldog looking out from a kennel" look with some neat firepower. Graviton guns!
Honestly, as someone who hasn't looked at a lot of Terminator Armor in his two years of being in the hobby, I like both the original and the up-scaled versions.
i am actually working on the aggressor terminator conversion you showed a while ago! Also I think adding the armor plate in the rear would help bulk him up just a tad bit more
It's really easy to use the entire Terminator upper torso - no need to merge the Gravis front with the Terminator rear parts. If you trim away the Gravis chest, leaving the abdominal armour, the Terminator upper torso sits onto it nicely. A little bit of trimming is required at the rear of the Gravis armor to accomodate to the oval exhaust port, but this and a little Green Stuff is all that's required to achieve a seamless fit. I think this looks far more Terminator-like and achieves the same True Scale height as your method. That being said, another clear and easy to follow video. Keep up the good work.
I think it looks pretty awesome. The dissonance you mentioned might be because the kitbash has some visible tacticool elements, like the knee guards and the boots, compared to the original which has more decorations (chains, shoulder shield, etc...).
As a person that was so poor I had to build my Talos from various other models from tabletop games I never heard of when I was like 15, this is great, I remember doing Chaos Obliterators from SM Termies and they were FINE, this one of yours actually look like a unit that could actualy move and attack while being tanky, OG Termies always looked more like a Ceremonial Armour Show-off squad to me
I can see why people might be off put by the design, it feels like it just doesn't have the oomph behind it, but in my opinion that could be pretty easily be fixed, by adding some plastic card into the mix, like cutting the shins in half vertically and then adding some plastic card would make it look wider and doing the same for the crothch/hip section too. Another thing would also probably help is giving the terminator more bling to it like artifacts, and other elaborately detailed things cause the suits are supposed be ancient relics. Other than that I do love the design of it and I hope you do more of these truescale terminator ideas in the future would be really cool! Keep up the good work.
What can be added to look more bulky would be the skirting at the top of the pauldron like the deathwatch terminator shoulder pauldron and armor plating on the shins. And decorations.
As someone who really, really dislikes Primaris Marines from a lore and aesthetic standpoint, I absolutely love this video. It's easy enough to convert normal Primaris into true-scale marines, so I never really worried there. Where I did despair was for the terminators, who were just so iconic and a huge part of the original marine aesthetic. I love the look of this terminator, and I love knowing a way to convert my own now as well. All of your videos are truly amazing Pete, but for me, this one just has such a special place in my heart because of what you achieved, so thank you again!
Been really looking forward to seeing your video on this conversion since you first posted it on the community tab, I've been in the progress of kitbashing my army across the rubicon to be primaris sized but still based in the firstborn as the scale just looks so much better with the modern models, I'll definitely be following this guide in the future! Great video as always Pete, your tutorials are always so helpful and well thought out, thank you for always putting up so much great content!
The conversion is great! I think some of the dissonance comes from the proportions of the chest to the head compared to OG terminators. Taking out scale, the OG terminators has the chest comparatively wider and bulkier than the upgraded version, so the already large head looks smaller on the OG version. The OG version's head also feels more set back in the chest, making the whole area feel more immense, while the head on the upgraded version sticks out more with more of a neck. I think if they ever do primaris terminators they will just need to be really chunky and wide.
Plastic card to widen the box part of the body and bigger shoulder pads sculpted from greenstuff would make it look more like a traditional terminator. Solid effort though. Going back and adding the hip plates was a huge step in the right direction
Looks great man, much more realistic and better proportioned. Yes looks different from the classic look, but much better in my opinion. Keep up the awesome work man.
I never owned warhammer minies I was playing something else in the 2000's but I had friends that played. Now as an adult and an avid fan of the universe I'm thinking to start collecting the minies 🤔
Literally yesterday morning I googled true scale Terminators for Ideas. 16 hours ago you dropped this video! Spooky! But thanks! Great stuff! (I agree about that last bit though. We are probably very used to certain silouettes.)
This is a wonderful model! I think you hit the nail on the head why it looks a bif off which is probably also why we haven't seen any Primaris Termies.....at least yet.
Looks good, i think that to make him a little more "bulky" some shields in the shoulderpad connections would work, or maybe even some extra plating in the knees... it also looks nice to see the more heavy looking models being bigger in size to a normal marine
I think it looks pretty dang good, honestly. I kinda like the more elongated torso, it makes it look more proportionally correct. But yeah, seems like it was a ton of work, but the result shows.
I think the part that gets me is how different the top half and the bottem half look. The top is box and squared off while the lower half has nice smooth curves and flows.
This is Brotha L and I believe you have done an excellent kitbash concept, and I'm going to barrow this concept if you don't mind and make a variant of my own with a box I had sitting for some time, the Lexicanum Varus Librarian Terminator, oh yeah as well as 5 primaris terminators/in heavy Gravis Armour combo So far, Pete when comes to kitbashing primaris your are the man. Oh and a Terminator chaplain; you should do those as well. I've been building GW models for the past 33+ yrs. your on the right path maybe this will get GW something to think about; if it's not already in the works just years down the line Bravo! Peace!
Honestly I love the conversion, I got into the game after primaris we're out so looking at the 5'11 terminators my brain could admit that something with the name terminators was that squat so this conversion looks sick to me.
Love this concept. I'm a newbie to 40k, reading the lore alone, this version makes way more sense. And as a player I've skipped over Terminators entirely in favour of Aggressors. I might end up doing this to a new batch though, just so I can say I have Terminators lol
I love the converted scale! The bulkyness isn't really a problem considering that GW is replacing most of the older model sets, and this looks like a cleaner much needed scale.
Definitely looks more in line with expected height. I think, based on the side by side comparison, it's the missing details that make it stand out from regular terminators. Ridgy legs, shoulder plate trims and serials etc, they all add to the general "bulk"
I do agree with you about the look but still great stuff, I used to kitbash terminators using back terminator armor but in front I used venerable dread coffin case, also i fit leg guards on top of the shoulder pads, to make it look like tartaros terminator, they look interesting 🤔... Great content
That is a really nice idea. I think the issue of looking less bulky is because having the arms lower breaks the bulky familiar silhouette. Typically they have this hunched top armoured heavy look. I personally think what you've come up with works really well though.
your work of upscaling is nice and clean but your conclusions about the "slim" final appearence are even more accurate. I've seen some interesting conversion of Aquilon Custodes to obtain the lovely bulky taste in a convincing Primaris size and style.
Honestly I would love and even jump on patreon just to see you Kitbash Tyberos the Red Wake (Chapter Master of the Carcharodon Astra i.e. Space Sharks). Just imagine: Upscaled terminator armour kitbashed with DREADNOUGHT armour. He is the biggest space marine yet, maybe on eye level with Guiliman.
Looks amazing, definitely will be doing something similar to my terminators. The bulk is lost a bit by shoulders being lower and there being a bit more of a gap in the lower torso as in you can see the under abdominal plate much more however this is only noticeable as much because as you said it we are soo used to the old models. in my opinion the conversion lends itself to much more dynamic poses than the old ones.
It's a really cool conversion! The only thing I would have changed is after marking where the arms were going to be pinned, I would have then bulked up the armour so that it was in line with that old connection point. I wish there was a way to upload a picture so that I can better explain what I mean.
I really like it, this is what I would like terminators to look like. I do get what you mean almost like an old friend you meet after years apart but that is still a terminator in my book.
Loving this and looking forward to doing it for myself down the road, I would love to see some upscaled Sanguinary Guard for the Blood Angels eventually if possible

This is epic. The Terminator head kinda reminds me of the masks the old Lego Bionicles wear
Thanks for including the link to the saws you use.
I dig it, think the proportions work really well
I wonder how this guy compares to the new Terminator kit that was just announced
Looks great man, much more realistic and better proportioned. Yes looks different from the classic look, but much better in my opinion. Keep up the awesome work man.
Thank you very much!
If your Terminator came as a GW kit I would buy it ... It's that good!
Yep, amazing, perfect. Just good terminators should look.
Will be doing this myself.
It doesn't look like it's hunched over like the regular terminators. Nice work.
Absolutely Love IT!!! No more Poop Squat Terminators!
I would also put the bomb piece from the old terminator on the lower back of the new one.
Incredible, wish I had the skills to make this work myself. Greatly prefer the taller look, well done!
This is a wonderful model!
I think you hit the nail on the head why it looks a bif off which is probably also why we haven't seen any Primaris Termies.....at least yet.
Yeh I think they have just too much of a classic appearance, it explains why we were given Gravis rather than terminator armour.
Looks good, i think that to make him a little more "bulky" some shields in the shoulderpad connections would work, or maybe even some extra plating in the knees... it also looks nice to see the more heavy looking models being bigger in size to a normal marine
Would love to see your take on a Primaris Darnath Lysander conversion. Great work! 💪
I think it looks pretty dang good, honestly. I kinda like the more elongated torso, it makes it look more proportionally correct. But yeah, seems like it was a ton of work, but the result shows.
They look really sick, I'll definetly try and recreate this for my terminators
I used this idea on a primaris and changed it some. Looks very good . Great idea btw
I would like to see an updated tutorial on how you painted that yellow!
I think the part that gets me is how different the top half and the bottem half look. The top is box and squared off while the lower half has nice smooth curves and flows.
You read my mind with this conversion, and it looks great! Now I'm gonna do it too.
love the paint job on this one
I don’t think it looks weird at all. You’ve done a great job. He looks fantastic.
Peace!
I really like the upscaled model and certainly compared to the old pewter models from the 90s that I had as a kid, these are vastly superior!
Oh man, I love it. This addresses all the things I've always disliked about Terminator armor in the minis. Don't mind the silhouette change at all.
Thank you 😀
"space marine terminator goes to a chiropractor" was my first thought when seeing the thumbnail
Now we need to make these into Grey Knights! love the video!
Honestly I love the conversion, I got into the game after primaris we're out so looking at the 5'11 terminators my brain could admit that something with the name terminators was that squat so this conversion looks sick to me.
Looks great. I'm a big Terminator fan, probably my favourite unit. Good job 👏
That painted terminator looks great, would love a tutorial on how you painted it!
Spectacular job sir. Hats off to you.
Great work and you're absolutely right, the terminators are well overdue a redesign!
I think this might be the best conversion I've seen on your videos, holy molly!
Thanks! - Big terminator fan (Space Hulk is my game) and I will now have to go get myself a squad of these!!!
I do agree with you about the look but still great stuff, I used to kitbash terminators using back terminator armor but in front I used venerable dread coffin case, also i fit leg guards on top of the shoulder pads, to make it look like tartaros terminator, they look interesting 🤔... Great content
That is some Artificer Armour there good sir. Well done.
That is a really nice idea. I think the issue of looking less bulky is because having the arms lower breaks the bulky familiar silhouette. Typically they have this hunched top armoured heavy look. I personally think what you've come up with works really well though.
I like how it looks, grand job.
Awesome video today Pete, thanks for making a new Terminator. I love the armor and always wondered what an updated one would be
this was my first video I saw. Great introduction imo
Fantastic idea and so well executed
Thank you! 😊
I love this conversion and I think it looks great!
your work of upscaling is nice and clean but your conclusions about the "slim" final appearence are even more accurate.
He looks excellent. Great job.
What an awesome conversion! Great job!
GW need to be takin notes.. if this was the new Terminator kit I would be buying it in a heart beat! They look EPIC! Don’t be harsh on your creation it’s 100% how I wish they would modernise the kit range
I like the conversion very much. If you think the conversion is too tall use it for a heroic champion type character.
