Rather than a marker of pathology and trauma, body piercing has been linked to a more positive expression of self and identity, even the research paper you cited is used in papers showcasing the body positivity that they bring. As well as, a level of personal identity to help overcome trauma. But I don't that gives you the right to call someone gross on their personal decisions.
