    Depression, from a Jungian perspective, can be seen as a profound gift because it compels the individual to confront the unconscious, shedding light on shadow aspects of the psyche that often remain hidden in the busyness of daily life. It is a call from the soul, urging us to turn inward and reassess the values, goals, and roles that no longer serve our true self. Much like alchemical Nigredo - the dark, chaotic stage preceding transformation - depression strips away illusions, leaving us bare to the deeper truths within. This descent into the underworld is not a punishment but a necessary journey, a liminal space where healing and wholeness are cultivated. When approached with curiosity and care, depression can guide us toward a richer, more authentic life, connecting us with the numinous and the archetypal patterns that shape our inner world. It is the psyche's invitation to growth, an initiation into the mystery of becoming.

      I'm not sure I agree with you; there is a tendency for individuals to over-estimate their agency over History, Economy, Social change and Industrialization. Maybe you will find your 'tribe' your 'niche' your group of like-minded people, with a similar outlook and values, etc., but you are dealing with massive external social forces that undermine this every step of the way. And that is the contrast between part of a given social, tribal identity versus large groups of faceless individuals who are as foreign to you as you to them, without the slightest iota of interest or responsibility to you and responsibility for themselves. This is, what I believe she was getting at.

      @@vladvlog9677 Thank you for your perspective, it’s a valid and important point. I agree that massive external social forces often feel overwhelming and beyond individual agency. These forces can indeed create a sense of alienation and fracture tribal or communal bonds, leaving individuals feeling disconnected from both others and themselves. That said, I see this as part of the tension we all must navigate - the interplay between the external forces shaping our lives and our internal capacity to respond to them. While we can’t control the larger tides of history, we can grow our awareness, find like-minded people, and create spaces, however small, where values, meaning, and a sense of connection can exist. It’s not about overestimating personal agency but about reclaiming what influence we do have in shaping our inner lives and the communities we participate in. I think this balance - between acknowledging the weight of external forces and recognizing the power of inner transformation - is key to navigating these challenges. It's also worth remembering that there is often more at play than we can see, and our efforts may have a greater impact than we can fully comprehend.

    • @vladvlog9677
      @vladvlog9677 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @ Thank you for your comments. I don't have any issue with the gist of what you are saying; we are compelled to seek out connection, belonging and identity - things that can only be found in our 'Tribe.' It is in our nature to do so, just as it is in our nature to be agentic and establish context. The majority of the present and recent past generations have never experienced the type of sedentary, stable 'Family Village living' as it's a thing of the past. No matter what individuals do personally, has not worked, so saying it's a question of navigating the inner with outer, sounds too naïve for me; the forces are way too strong, moving in a very particular direction. The individual is more alone, isolated and alienated than he has ever been before, because the effects of these external forces are its consequences. There are no formulas to life.

    I was psychotically depressed, full on delusions and fits of rage for over a year, and it forced me to make sense of my life. It cut me away from all my friends and anyone I could rely on. I took a series of courageous steps forward, not knowing the direction I was going. I gained a bunch of knowledge online during this time and now, I'm not even the same person I was 10 months ago... I have direction and meaning and even faith in God. Which is also a massive boon to overcoming insecurity. Im not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but small steps forward become exponential. I was fighting the embarressment of all the things Ive said and done along the way. Ive made mistakes that people would surely think I was insane. But I believe I am on the road to making something of myself and wont settle for less than what I always knew was possible within me. Overcoming an abusive father and a smothering mother. I have found balance and confidence.

    I hope it’s ok to suggest something on your channel but one of the subjects which has helped me through depression is the depth of Psychological Astrology, particularly books by Dr Liz Greene who is a Zurich-trained Jungian analyst. Jung’s daughter, by the way, became an astrologer and Jung was very aware of those deep cultural roots. A helpful website to find a birth chart is Astrodienst, which is based in Zurich.
    Anyway, what I wanted to get across is that transits of the outer planets - particularly Pluto and Saturn - can help us to understand the powerful, sometimes destructive changes that are going on and so we might not be subsumed by the ‘blacknesses’ which seem to descend from nowhere: ie we can work WITH them and not be defeated by them. Especially if we know the transit will last for a year or two, and that we would be wise to submit rather than resist the changes.
    For any Jungian who has more than a passing interest in astrology, archetypes, fate, myth, alchemical stages, depression etc Liz Greene’s work will shine insight on the process of individuation from a planetary perspective.

    I see her point and it's true to a degree of rural and village - however it's a rather idealistic view too. There's a lot of suppression in small community, a lot of enduring intolerable people - small dictators often rule and people get away with things, because there's no escaping them. The worse they are, the less they care about any push back. So it's not always balanced out, sometimes people are just trapped.

Her circle of friends ignored her abuses of me. One of countless scenarios of when the village fails the child. Exceptions were my bff's mother who saw the abuse clearly, who stepped in countless times and who was hated by my mother. I am soooo grateful to her despite her accidentally losing my camp counselors glowing evaluation of me as a natural leader. She read it aloud to me, her husband and her daughter before letting it go out the car window as we drove home from camp.😂

C'est dû en partie par la mondialisation de tout par l'homme, sa quête de richesse, de pouvoir, la poursuite de ses désirs, l'import/export trop facile... She kind of reminds me of my Austrian grandmother who often tells stories of how people used to do things when she was growing up. Quaint stories of how people would talk to each other in ways that seem laughable to a young person from modern times. She is stuck in the past and never really met the 20th century and isn't an easy person to talk to so the grandchildren and so on don't really have a relationship with her.
    The problem though is that she is very religious and has that old fashioned fire and brimstone way of scaring children into behaving "good". I always hated that. As a sensitive and innocent kid that stuff has given me nightmares and deep seated fears that still persist to this day.

    why would a God create a system where depression was needed to find fulfillment.. and if your answer is ''the fall'' as if that one size fits all solution justifies the God putting this into motion and allowing us to suffer through it, then the next question is why would God create a system where it was possible for a human to mess up so badly (disobedience) that the punishment/ response from God would then be every single instance of suffering that exists today...

    • @The_Jungian_Aion
      @The_Jungian_Aion  วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      In Jungian psychology, we’re not referring to a theological God but rather to the inner God-image, the Self, the Central guiding archetype, the totality of the psyche. Theology, as a discipline, is not something I personally engage with or invest in. This perspective is beautifully articulated by Edward Edinger throughout his writings, where he explores the profound psychological significance of these concepts.
      From the Jungian perspective, depression isn’t punishment or a flaw but a natural psychological process signaling the need for transformation. It pushes us to confront the unconscious and align with the deeper truths of the Self. Rather than asking why suffering exists, Jungian psychology reframes it as an inherent part of life-a challenge that, while painful, holds the potential for growth and meaning. This approach shifts the focus from blame to transformation, encouraging us to find wholeness through the struggle.

      If you’re referring to the Christian God, I personally think that the story is incomplete. The way Christianity teaches about God is very black or white, very little middle ground. Other religions from the east, even extinct religions had a unified idea of the one God. Of course they also had deities that represented other aspects of this one supreme God. The way I see it, simply put, the one absolute God has created EVERYTHING, to this God there is no black or white, only everything. Therefore what we see as evil and good, is just a matter of degree in an action. Like cold or hot is simply a measure of temperature.
      To this God, who is in everything and has created everything, all experiences are the whole of life, good or bad. There is no punishment or reward, there is no hidden reason or divine plan for why bad things happen, they just do. What matters is how you respond, the meaning in life comes from you, because you are the one alive.

    • @brianbridges8124
      @brianbridges8124 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@thuladei5552 thanks for you response.. this God that you put forward doesnt seem to be a God that can be referred to as a loving God. Your definition has set him up to be completely neutral.. in that suffering and well being are just different states of being and that neither is really preferable to this God. Since love kindness and mercy are never associated with creating an environment where suffering HAS to occur ( outside of religion). It sounds like your God is more of a deistic God and isnt really concerned with our well being or lack thereof.

    Every problem you solve is a step forward. No problems no progress. Think about it ... if everything that ever happens to you is good AND easy then you`re staying the same. Think about examples: driving, math, painting... if you don`t find a task at least slightly difficult then you`re just repeating what you already know. Now, life could be more interesting and beautiful if you are ``sharper``, but some people look for difficulty on their own, they don`t need depression to punch them in the face to look within. It just happens more frequently so because as a whole we don`t like personal progress.....there is no societal pressure ! We want ``things``, better cars, bigger houses, more money .... but we don`t want ourselves to be better, we can`t know what better is ! Talk to a narcissist or a chronically angry person, what will they know about their condition ?!? NOTHING ! They don`t know how it is to not be narcissistic or angry, else they would like it and not be so ! We don`t know what we don`t know and it`s the biggest problem we have ! Like the matrix movie, the whole plot is that people don`t know !

      It is indeed an uprooting process, but I don’t see the need for a reversal. Instead, I envision a maturation into a truly post-modern perspective (what is often labeled as "post-modern" today is, in fact, ultra-modern). A genuine post-modern life would integrate the richest elements of the pre-modern world - its wisdom, traditions, and depth - with the rationality and technological advancements of the modern age. This synthesis, at least on an individual level, is not only possible but also a promising starting point.
