This video saved me $1000.00 dollars. I was told by a shop that my compressor was bad and that the system wouldn't take a charge. I crawled underneath and discovered the AC belt missing completely. I installed the AC belt and a New drive belt. I vacuumed the system and charged it. AC is cold as ice again. Thanks for all the videos.

Great video - only one very minor item worth mentioning. In your companion Silverado video about the serpentine belt, you might want to mention that if you're doing both belts at the same time (like I was), do the AC one first. :)

1A Auto: Just changed out my AC fan belt and it took about 5-10 minutes and all is working well. Takes about as much effort to change a light bulb, had 2 quotes both around $160 for a 5 minute job. The air intake took a couple of minutes to wiggle out and put back on.
Thanks for the video, saved me $$$ now I'll go out to have a nice dinner.

This video was great. I'd been stalling throughout the winter to replace the ac belt on my 2000 Z71, thinking there was no way I could do it. But today I thought I'd give it a shot. Confounded, I used the power of Google to search for tips and this video came up as an option. I watched it and 30 minutes later my AC is back to working!

Ive found you can do this from up top. I mean, I'm tall and have long arms and can reach down to get to the ac belt tensioner. I can see why some might need to remove the lower shroud but not really necessary.

Great video. I honestly did not know there was a separate drive belt for the ac on my 2003 until I saw it hanging down, broken. I guess that explains the noise I was hearing before it snapped. I thought it was a bad pulley.

The serpentine belt tensioner should automatically apply enough pressure to it so that it doesn't squeal. Over time the tensioners can loose some of their tention and need to be replaced. Hope this helps you out.

If you are getting a mildew smell coming from the vents, you might have cabin air filters that were installed in the vehicle that need to be changed out. Some of those vehicles came with them, others did not so you will have to check it out.

Perfect. Thanks for the step-by-step talk-through, good camerawork and naming the sizes of the fittings. With the help of this video, I replaced both belts. Unfortunately, it turns out the screech I hear when I turn the motor on is now likely due to a bad A/C compressor. Anyways, I appreciate your informative video.

    • @paint3ball

You can just replace the AC belt but if you’ve never replaced your serpentine belt, I highly recommend changing both

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 ปีที่แล้ว

It may fit snug but shouldn't be impossible either. If it's a new belt, measure it against the old belt to see if it's the right size and not smaller.

  • @1AAuto

@1soccerkid If the belt is loose the belt tentioner may need to be replaced if it's not holding enough tension on the belt.

If the issue is only when it happens when the A/C is running, there might be a bad bearing either in the pulley or there could be something wrong internally in the compressor.

I have the 5.3 so maybe there is more room but I was able to reach the bottom tensioner without removing the skid plate. also I have an aftermarket intake so maybe that is why I had more room to reach the upper tensioner.

I have having the same problem. From what I've been able to find, it's most likely the AC clutch that is locked. If you call a dealership, chances are they won't replace just the AC clutch, but rather the entire compressor - my dealership quoted my 900-1500 bucks. At that rate it would behoove me to just buy a new vehicle (2000 silverado - 188K). But I was able to find a place that will replace the AC clutch as they have the required "special" tools, going to call them as well.

what about the belt squeal? i tried putting another belt on 1/2" smaller but it wouldn't go even with tensioner loosened all the way. the first tensioner i put on to replace the factory tensioner broke so this is the 3rd tensioner on it. the slipping only happens while the compressor is engaged and it has a new dayco belt and tensioner, i've tried belt conditioner and even cleaned the pulleys with paint thinner to ensure there's no build up on it. would you say i need to replace the a/c clutch?

If you pull the belt tensioner down far like we show in the video you should be able to slip it over the AC pulley. If any of our viewers need to replace their serpentine belt, we carry the one shown in this video on our website. Here's a link to them. We also offer free shipping on all orders in the US www.1aauto.com/serpentine-belt-acdelco-k040378hd/i/1aesb00053?TH-cam&CTA%20Comment&ATony

We currently do not have an auto repair video that covers this particular repair. We will keep this request in mind in the event that we need to make this repair in the future. 1aauto.com +Dustin Towsend

Why does every video on the a/c belt give the number for the serpentine belt but not the actual a/c compressor belt?

Turn the AC on and see how the AC clutch reacts, see if it shuts off when you loose the cold air. If it does, check the AC relays and the power to the system. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

I replaced my belt and it only lasted about 3 months. It kept making a whiny sound whenever I turn the ac on but it would eventually stop, then all the sudden the belt broke and its just hanging on the pulley. Is there something else I need to do? Please Help!

It’s not always as easy as it looks. Maybe the parts store sold me a belt 1 inch shorter than the original. As the old belt snapped and flew, I have nothing to compare. Screwdriver and pry the new one on while holding the idler pulley is not an easy task

You may want to inspect the belt to see if it was coming into contact with something that may have frayed it. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
