Lisa Kudrow’s portrayal of Phoebe is deceptive. If you only watch a few episodes, you might only think Phoebe is a dumb blonde. But Lisa brings nuances to the character that really make Phoebe quite complex. Phoebe is a really smart, talented character. She beats Ross at intellectual arguments; she helps the other characters find truths in a situation; she accurately reads character motivations. Her sarcasm rivals Chandler’s. Lisa Kudrow deserved her Emmy’s.

Back in school, this show was still in its early seasons. We had a class project to each write a letter to our favourite celebrity. I wrote to Lisa Kudrow to tell her how funny I found Phoebe. She sent me back a signed photo and a little letter (unfortunately I lost the letter over the decades but still have the signed photo.) Years later I thanked her on social media and she she said she remembered the letter (covered in drawings of Smelly Cat) and said 'thank YOU!' I doubt it was actually her but it was cute anyway.
She was/is GOLDEN. Such a fantastic actress and character. Had anyone else taken the role of Phoebe Buffay they would’ve brought your stereotypical, ditzy blonde to this role but Lisa Kudrow brought so much more to it that she made a common character original and iconic in every way. I swear, Lisa IS Phoebe in an exaggerated way. She also kind of reminds me of Alexis Rose from Schitt’s Creek where you have two common airheaded roles that found the perfect actresses to take what’s a repeated character in Hollywood and made it into their own and brought a whole new level to what would’ve been a basic character had anyone else played it. Phoebe Buffay is like the broke AND broken version of Alexis Rose - without a spoiled and ritzy past. Phoebe also thought before she spoke. She was just an oddball. And that’s what made it fun and funny to watch every week and every day in the streaming world. She is a big reason why Friends is still enjoyable to watch today nearly 30 years after it premiered and 18 years since the final episode aired. She is a character that fits in any era and with any generation and a critical factor why we’ll still be streaming Friends 20-30 years from today. Rachel was always my favorite but Phoebe was right up there too.

Then there’s also the numerous times she says, “Stop the madness!” when trying to break up arguments. Then there’s the episode where she goes to meet Mike’s parents and starts using a South Hampton, upper crust accent! She was so good at it! When Mike asks her to just be herself, she says, “It’s hod to stop!” I LOVE PHOEBE!
I love when she speaks French and when she is helping Chandler with the tasks to propose to Mónica ❤ and the funniest for me is when she is looking for gum in her purse but finds every other item different than gum 🤣
Phoebe was always my favourite friend. She always stood a bit on the outside of the group..but had the best lines and her crazyness made me laugh so much.. The group dynamic worked becaus of her.
My favorite Lisa line is her delivery in "you look so...good!" when Rachel went to the the wedding dressed as "Something you drink when you're, nauseous!😂
I can't help but feel bad for the guy that turned down Chandler, but he purposely avoided the ensemble because he wanted the main character on a different show. There's a lesson here.
I just started watching this show. I never had time to watch despite being familiar with the show for years (watching short, etc). After 2nd season, im truly attracted to Phoebe character.
They should've included season 1 episode 1 phoebe with "Rain drops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Door bells and sleigh bells and something with mittens" LOL
One of my favorite earlier moments of the show is when they get locked out of their car at a rest stop. 5 of them. Then Ross has to drive there to unlock the car, and sometime during the unlocking, Chandler starts doing a weird dance. (He claims he's imitating Shelly Winters from the Poseidon Adventure about the capsizing of a passenger ship.) Chandler is hopping from foot to foot all goofy while the rest of them are arguing loudly. Then Phoebe starts yelling "Stop guys, stop, look what you're doing to Chandler!!!" .... (I think it might have been during this same outing that Joey spelled out PLEH with sticks, and that stands for HELP backwards so helicopters can see it from the sky.)
There are so many favorite moments,kinda hard to choose from. But I must pick her phone conversation with Emily’s British housekeeper from the Season 4 London episodes(Ross’ wedding)
