  • Had a customer drop off a long water oak log and he wanted some 20' beams. So I cut these beams at 20'5"x12"x4.5" and 575 lbs each.

I cut about 50 beams for a customer at 6x8x20.5' on my TK 1400. All dead ash that we hauled out of his woods. That was a task. All single beam per tree except for on one tree I tried cutting two beams like this and they bowed like crazy - glad yours didn't so that!
Nice video, I like how you talk through the decision making process on where to make cuts to get the best cant for the desired product

Awesome that's a lot of work for beams that size. I like to talk it out to myself as well so I can figure out am I doing it right.

It's always harder to give the customers what they want when the log just don't have it in it.

Look at it this way, at 4.5" thick, that is is equivalent to a 3 ply 2x12 laminated beam. That will be a substantial beam for any application.

G'day Thomas, that water oak looks very nice, what is the percentage of moisture content when you calculate 75 pounds per cubic foot ? You'll have to excuse me I'm used to the metric system.

I'm using an app called log weight pro. It doesn't really say anything about moisture content but I'm assuming it's used to calculate green logs. It gives a metric option as well. Water oak is 1197kg/m³ . It's pretty dense.
      Here's the app.

According to the Penn state university graph water oak @ 12 P/C moisture content weighs 630 kg per cubic meter 👍.
