  • Fast Laser sailing with downwind death roll towards end. I was forced to jybe due to shoals off of my starboard bow and a large tour boat astern. I was a little rusty and the laser death rolled and then turtled. I failed to secure my main-sheet and it ran through all of the pulleys as well, fun fun! This was first time on Laser in 25 years.
This is a 1982 Laser and was filmed in the Thousand Islands near the Navy Island group in August 2015.

A death roll is a capsize to windward, you capsized to leeward on a reach because you let that boom end get wet.

I hope you still are sailing the Laser. I was out of a Laser for 30 years and have been sailing it in Calgary for the last 4. Slow as hell, but ton's of fun and the Masters group are a great bunch! Keep sailing!!

Happened the same to me the other day :) Even though the main had an eight knot at the end. But I'm using a new line from Rooster that it doesn't like knots hahaha. If I don't sail for 1 or 2 weeks I get kind of rusty.... so kudos to you, because after 25 years you seem to be doing great!

I know what I'm saying, I'm a laser sailor myself, I'm 11th Canadian in Laser Radial. This man was on a beam/reach which is not downwind. When your leech is further than a 90 degree angle with the wind on a run, that makes you capsize really quickly, that's when you can consider it a deathroll....

Indeed, exactly. And with a deathroll the boom points up (another simple clue ;-) )

I'd love to take up Laser sailing again...last time I was in one was about 1977...I'm 64 now and wondering if it would be too much for me...

You can do it! Maybe avoid higher winds to start.

Where is that a death roll? It's just a normal capsize

    St. Lawrence river?

And the centerboard was up during the second roll. I personally sail 420s and have watched many sailors mistakenly push in their centerboard after capsizing and ended up turtling.

Actually, a death roll is to windward, usually caused by too little kicker and having your boom out too far in breeze.

That was not a death roll
