    Hemolytic disease of the newborn was a concern for my parents when I was born, but I turned out to be RhD- as well, so it turned out my mother didn't need the Rho(D) immune globulin to prevent sensitization towards RhD+ blood, but she needed it for my younger siblings who came later.
    I didn't realize that RhD- blood types were so much rarer in Africa. I had a coworker who had recently immigrated from Nigeria tell me about how his wife had died waiting a medical procedure because she also had RhD- blood, and they could not find a match for her.

    I know I'm a bit late to the party, but I thought I'd make a couple comments for anyone else who might be watching this.
    First, there is no 'd' antigen. It is like "O" in the ABO system in that it represents the lack of an antigen (specifically, a lack of the "D" antigen). There are 5 Rh antigens; D, C, E, c and e.
    Second, You absolutely can have both C and c or both E and e, and even all 5. While you can receive the genes for only one of each from each parent, they are co-dominant alleles and will both be expressed. For example, if your Rh genotype is R1R2 (DCe/DcE), you have all 5 antigens. The same is true about R1r" (DCe/dcE) or R2r' (DcE/dCe). And in r'r" (dCe/dcE), you have everything except the D antigen. In fact, the most common Rh genotype (~30%) is R1r (DCe/dce) which means you have D, C, c and e.

    Sad true story. I was in a relationship. She had an ectopic pregnancy. ( I hope that's right) But she wasn't told much about it. And no one told me how or why it happened. Next pregnancy it was worse. We where getting married after the child was born. But a little over a month or almost 2 months. It was bad. She lost the child. She went and did everything to find out why. No one offered to ask me about my blood type. We put off the wedding. A year goes by. She is pregnant with twins. 2 weeks. That's it. She almost died. Our relationship had taken so much We just couldn't stand the depression and anger. Even tho we love each others. Emotions was bad. We blame doctors and we blame life. But we never was told about the RH blood. I guess I was sick that day in high school as well. So did we have terrible doctors? Just curious.

    Ok, this is pretty hard to follow because the narrator gets technical without adequate definitions.\
    Here's my question. My mother was AB negative. She had four pregnancies. I am the second. My two sisters came later and they were fine, didn't need any treatment after birth. So should we assume my father was negative too? They are both gone. Am I and are my sisters negative too?

    • @BJA717
      @BJA717 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many Rh negative women have multiple uneventful pregnancies to Rh positive babies. This is because of a medication called WinRho or RhoGAM. It is essentially antibodies to the D antigen that pre-sensitize any potential fetal blood that gets into the mother's circulation and block the body from detecting it. Because the body cannot detect the D antigen itself, it therefore doesn't produce anti-D antibodies (which would be an issue for subsequent pregnancies, but still far from impossible), and the passive anti-D that was administered eventually is removed from your blood circulation..
      Every Rh negative mother receives WinRho at 28 weeks and then again at birth (or miscarriage or abortion), so this is not usually an issue. In fact, my own grandmother is Rh negative, but my mom and my uncle are both Rh positive.
      So, it wouldn't be possible to comment on the Rh status of you and your siblings with just this information. It is still very possible that you and your sister are both Rh positive because your mother would have received WinRho anyway. Likewise for your father, it wouldn't be possible to comment on his Rh status without further information.
      Hope that helps (even if it is a bit late).

    I don't understand something. I donated blood in college and my donor card stated O Neg. I understand that O Neg can be given to all blood types, but I have never seen any exceptions. When I saw my blood type, I commented to the blood bank technician that I was happy to know that I can donate to everyone. She stated that I could donate to everyone, EXCEPT pregnant women and newborns. I have only heard that exception to the rule, never actually seen it stated. Why is that? Does that mean all negative blood types cannot donate to pregnant women and infants? My husband has positive blood and since mine is negative, I received a RhoGam shot during my pregnancy and another one after my son was born, because he is positive.

    • @missyjo1228
      @missyjo1228 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, but was surprised I had to have another one after the birth. I asked the nurse what his blood type is and she replied, " apparently not the same as yours, which is why you get another shot." I had a missed miscarriage 14 years later and I chose to naturally abort so they gave me a shot to help with the process.

    • @missyjo1228
      @missyjo1228 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If a blood group was done on a cord blood specimen, that is the blood type of your baby. It means your child is A+.

    How does Rh-null work?

    • @leesonstream5532
      @leesonstream5532 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It completely lacks all of the antigens in the Rhesus system. Even somebody with an Rh-negative blood type still has a presence of antigens on their red blood cells; but individuals with Rh-null (very rare) have a complete lack of all 61 possible antigens within that system.

      This depends on parents genotype. Each parent can be DD or Dd genotype. Only when both parents are Dd can they conceive a Rh negative child. So, a child will be Rh negative only if both parents pass on the d allele. Parents have 50% chance of passing the d allele. To make it simple, it's possible. My parents and my brother are Rh + but I'm Rh -

      I am Rh negative, I am missing the D antigen. I had to get a shot called Rho(D) immune globulin or HyperRHO to protect my baby from being attacked from my blood, I just found out today. Rh negative blood and Rh positive don't mix, hence the shot because my baby was Rh Positive and I had to get an abortion because of not being able to carry an Rh positive baby to full term ever. Its rare but horrible none the less

      Ok, first, you are correct, if one parent is homozygous for "D" and the other is homozygous for "d", then 100% of their offspring would be Rh positive.
      Second, not exactly sure what Amona Maria is going on about making themself healthy? Being Rh negative vs Rh positive largely has no effect on your overall health (a bit more complicated than that, but for all intents and purposes, that is true).
