(HD) Watching Airplanes - Snow Storm - Minneapolis / St. Paul International Airport KMSP / MSP

  • It's cold, it's wet and it's WHITE outside. Heavy snow. Welcome to MSP in near blizzard conditions. The snow starts gently at first and gets worse as the video goes on.
    There are some airports that handle this kind of weather well... Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport is one of them. Being no stranger to snow myself, having lived in Chicago most of my life, I have a fondness for snow and thoroughly enjoyed running around Terminal 1 Lindbergh taking in the action.
    These are the aircraft brave enough to venture into the whiteness, the airport running on a somewhat slower schedule, but a schedule no less, in 3/4 mile to nil visibility.
    Watching it all unfold and seeing the cancellations start to come in due mostly to lack of airplanes for later flights... the visibility was below landing minimums in many cases but not below takeoff minimums so planes took off but not many more arrived. I couldn't barely see the runways from the terminals, however, so I didn't really get any good shots of takeoffs or landings that took place.
    Enjoy the snow from inside the terminals in this snowflake filled picture.

    Awesome! Some people don't realize how much snow can effect airports. With just 6 inches and how ever many miles of taxiways and runways it takes a while to plow and when NYC got 20 inches, I bet that took a while. Huge like from me!

    I like those baggage elevators @ 8:30. They're fascinating to watch.
    Very interesting how effectively the blast from the engines of the A320 @ 5:48 clears the snow. Interesting how the snow settles on the engine cowlings; you can see where the hot parts are.

    wow that was a lot of snow and they can still fly in some of that? I heard about that blizzard that missed Illinois. We don't have any snow on the ground. It went to Wisconsin and Minnesota and some southern states but missed us. At 7:33 I saw those boxes and it dawned on me is that what they put the suitcases in if its snowing badly so that they don't get wet. That's real interesting.

    It looks like they can still fly In that weather if the sky and wind is calm at a certain altitude. Like if its bad high up too than they cancel many flights but if it looks good at almost 35,000 feet without much wind on the way up they can fly it. Even more so I imagine a plane doesn't want to fly to another state if that other state is getting the same storm while a plane will fly into another state if the weather is better. So I imagine most flight cancellations are short flights and longer flights get to go if the storm and wind is not too bad.

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sheri-myvideos true and false. airlines have things called landing and takeoff minimums and if the weather is below these then they are not allowed to takeoff or land. cancellations happen for this and many other reasons.... sometimes a plane is not available for the next flight at an airport if the weather is too low and they couldn't land it there in the first place.

    • @Sheri45myvideos
      @Sheri45myvideos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh ok...its all interesting. When I landed back in Chicago from Cleveland last May the weather was iffy and the night before there was a chance of thunderstorms when landing which i was actually excited about not scared:) The next day before we landed there was a lot of dark clouds like one of those spotty storms where the storm is passing over and the sun is coming out. When we landed there was a few rain drops on the window. Its in my utube video of the dark clouds in the background but the sun was out too like spotty storms that passed through. Just wanted to share that because it was cool. That was the flight where I got to sit in the cockpit for a minute after we landed and the flight attendant took the two pictures of me. By the way I changed I icon I wanted to change it up and picked a Meerkat from the San Diego zoo. I may change it again but I'm trying out the new icon. But my cockatiel who was normally in the icon she is turning 20 and doing great!

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weather is certainly very cool :) and complex enough that it can take years of study to learn it thoroughly. It can be sometimes tricky to tell which kinds of weather are dangerous and which kinds may be rough but not unsafe. Of course, you wouldn't land in a tornado, but when it comes to darker clouds and higher winds some conditions may require diverting and others are handled normally. This is why pilots and airline dispatchers must get extensive weather training in order to understand when action must be taken to avoid a bad situation. Great avatar btw :)

    • @Sheri45myvideos
      @Sheri45myvideos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were probably watching my plane extra since a storm had been there and appeared to be moving out. It was interesting how when we were way out on the lake i could see clouds over Chicago and land but no clouds were by us. As we got closer to land flying past some of the clouds that were hugging the lake the plane got a little bouncy. When i first saw the skyline we were probably 25 miles away or 30 miles away and we had about 15 minutes left or so of the flight is my memory and guess.

    • @Sheri45myvideos
      @Sheri45myvideos 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If i had to pick one of the most fascinating flights i would say its the Cleveland to Chicago flight. It was fun flying over the lake and seeing land at 30 miles away. And flying write past the Chicago skyline was fascinating because the Chicago skyline is the best!!!

    I live around MSP and I was wondering where the place is you do the spotting I would like to do that in the summer here. Thanks!

      +Jack Olson I would suggest the airplane park on Cargo Rd. It's towards the center of the airport past all the cargo facilities.

    Nice spotting, but that's not really a snowstorm by Minnesota standards.

      Eh, ... keywords, my friend, that's what makes TH-cam go 'round. And yeah, it's not a snowstorm by Chicago standards either.

    Love it and MSP is my favorite airport. However there's always delays during stupid winter. Whether it's de-icing the plane or the ramp agents taking forever to get people boarded or dumb ass people taking too long to sit down in the plane. I've always been delayed at MSP. One time we couldn't take off from LAX because it was supposedly snowing at MSP. I didn't get it.

    • @OHAREAVIATION
      @OHAREAVIATION  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +02Nawal well f the weather is bad enough at the destination (in this case MSP) then the fight is not allowed to takeoff per regulations. It's called landing minimums and it's to ensure that airliners can arrive safely. Not all airliners can land in zero visibility.
