    When drilling from one side of the bracket to the other, how do you get the hole to be straight?
    When I do this kind of drilling even the slightest angle makes the hole to end not in the right place where the bracket hole is.

    • @LewisRenovation
      @LewisRenovation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I find something that's straight to go off of, like a deck joist in this case, and keep the drill bit and joist edge looking parallel as I drill. Also edit out the one I screwed up on :) you can also just drill half way through from both sides

    How were you able to drill so accurately that the bit exited through the hole on the other side of the bracket.

    • @LewisRenovation

      Just making sure the bit is perpendicular to the post...plus editing out the time it didn't go that way.

      Drill a small diameter hole first then use the big one for the final hole.

    Well done, both video and your project. I have two questions; I'm about to install posts for a pergola. There are 4 posts and they are all in one row. There is not connection opposite of the posts, so the top of the pergola will just hang about 3.5 feet out from the posts, and have lattice on it, and that's it, and then a vine will grow up the posts and over the lattice. I live in South Florida, so that means sand, not hard ground.
    Given this info, would I be better off installing a concrete footing and using Simpson-Strong Ties, or putting the posts in the ground and surround with concrete?
    They will rise about 8 feet from ground to top, so if you recommend putting in ground, how deep should I go?
    For reference, I will be using pressure treated, 4x4 posts, connected at the top with 2x4s stretching approximately 26 feet across the top, 2x3s as support on each post, and 2x2s for the lattice. All pressure treated, all sizes are nominal.

    • @LewisRenovation
      @LewisRenovation  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d recommend putting the posts all the way in the concrete. So you have the force up in the air acting against the entire length of the post which is in the ground for several feet. Also , from personal experience, when using long PT 4x4’s get the top finished or at least braced up really well quickly (like within a few days) so that they don’t start drying out and twist and banana on you

      @@LewisRenovation Thank you for this. Yes, I was planning and building the top part just as soon as the concrete sets. Since I'm going about 8 feet above ground should I use 12 foot 4x4s and go 4 feet in the ground? Also, I didn't explain fully. Sticking out from the top of each 4x4 will be a 4 foot 2x4 on either side of the post. From center of 4x4, the 2x4 will hang about 3.5 feet out pointing east, and .5 feet out pointing west. I hope this makes sense. At any rate, I appreciate you and the help you have already provided.

    Which is stronger in strong wind / hurricane in Houston TX... The concrete footer and the metal bracket like yours or put the post 3 ft into the ground and pour concrete around it. I need it to be strong so I can put a polycarbonate roof or even shingle roof on top.

    I am pretty sure code in the U.S. wouldn't allow this because of the uplift issue if someone were to put a roof over it and not just an open pergola. There are simpson post anchors that have to be installed into wet concrete so that it locks in better. It isn't difficult to locate these right where you want them when you pour the footings. In other words, check your local codes even if you aren't getting a permit to see what the best practices are in your area especially if you are located in an earthquake or high wind area.
