First i'm so glad finally someone show interest to WASP, really appreciate. Now concerning WASP n Blackie Lawless it's good to hear the progression from the start. From young crazy boys to mature. To me the band is like the journey of life start furious, crazy, raw and finish wise, emotional, religious. Now you never reacted to their old crazy stuff, i would recommend "Fk like a Beast", "Wild Child", etc.. but too many people already did that. So to me if i had only 1 suggestion, it's "Harder, Faster" with the speech at the beginning, cause this song is really crazy and it's a live performance so you can appreciate the incredible voice of blackie. Regards and good day sir.
@@MichaelMartin-eh6wl respect and will defend your point of view. Yet for me it adds nothing to the equation of life. If it gives some comfort for people then great! Blackie Lawless has had a REAL transformation into a positive role model. He had a TRUE spiritual rebirth and not what I refer to as a “prison” spiritual rebirth. Very positive music.
This song was inspired by a statement that Abraham Lincoln made while touring the Gettysburg battlefield. Lincoln said "Heaven must surely be hung in black." This song is about a soldier trying to get into heaven but being turned away because there is no more room.
I was there.. I survived a terrible illness. I got diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and I was found at my home close to death. Rushed to the hospital in a medically indouested coma. The medical team saved my life and I woke up three weeks later not knowing what had happened. This song I hear now and it speaks to me that I wasn't meant to pass on...it wasn't my time. It was my time to realize that I had a second chance...
Duuuudee, i love it! Wasp is one of those bands, for myself anyways that i never get tired of listening to. Everytime i hear a song from them its almost the same feeling as the first time you heard it, it just simply keeps amazing me. But yeah some similar songs that might surprise you are , the idol, godless run, into the fire, miss you, sleeping (in the fire), or another one that gets me going is "take me up". I guarantee you none of these will dissapoint, hell no wasp song will dissapoint, but yeah some of which i listed are also that ballad type feeling with amazing guitar solos and outros, look forward to seeing more of ya man, awesome as always!
I never knew the inspiration behind it with regards to the soldier, but I always thought it was (it got the impresssion) that this song was about depression. More specifically, an individual who is suicidal. Been a WASP fan since I was a teen. Just turned 27 and love them even more.
Welcome to the fold. I met Blackie in 1986 in Orange County at the airport I was in uniform and he shook my hand and game me a pair of tickets to their show. Been a fan ever since.

Great reaction! This song was referring to Abraham Lincoln seeing the fields of dead soldiers after Gettysburg and commenting that he hoped there was room left in Heaven for the rest of us.I can tell you are a fan of Mr Lawless🤘He has darker music on the KFD album...check out the horror
Fun fact, since 1992, W.A.S.P. has, for all intents and purposes (and the ever-changing lineup of musicians not withstanding), been a Blackie Lawless solo band - which Blackie nearly did with The Crimson Idol (release it as a solo project), but fortunately, it had so much of the W.A.S.P. vibe and sound that he elected to release it under the W.A.S.P. name, and it's been that way since. The next album, Still Not Black Enough, I consider an "unofficial sequel" to TCI, and a quasi-concept album. It has many recurring/common themes throughout and refers back to the TCI album on a song or two.
Spot onnnnn! I was 15 back then and I felt these two albums are so related in their delivery and structure of songs. Even the pattern of Heavy vs Ballads. They are my favourite albums, maybe because I grew up listening to them? But WASP is in my top selection, always listen to them.
Yes been waiting for this one such a masterpiece! Great insightful commentary as well my brother. As someone commented below their song Hallowed Ground is about 9/11 and is just as emotional as this one.
This song is a reference to the quote that Abraham Lincoln said after the Civil War. Due to the overwhelming cost of lives in the fight for our liberty and belief in the Bill of Rights, Lincoln said after the war "Surely, heaven is hung in Black".
Thanks for the vid. I've discovered WASP like a month ago and and damn... They quickly became one of my favorite bands, tracks like this one or The Idol are so damn good.
There's another version of this video that uses a story utilizing charcoal drawings to make the video into a movie type story and the video story is just amazing along with the song, just incredible. WASP should have used it as the official video
Blackie has always been an inspiration to me. I am not an artist, muscian, etc. I am a fan. His first works were the beginning of his story to be told. Blackie to me is one of the, if not the best song writer, artist, I have ever witnessed in my life. Yea, the vocals, etc., all play a very important role in the delivery of his works, but the time, energy, the lyrics, all tell a very important story of life, be it his own, or anothers. The man is legend! His lifes journey resinates with almost anyone who ever hears his music. The early days, battles with the PMRC, etc., were all a part of the building of this band. Blackie, knows how to write, create, to provoke thought, idea, and to really get to your heart and soul, so you can validate your own life journey. He brings an element that no other artist ever has, at least that I am aware of. I grew up with 80's hairbands, KISS, etc., when I got my hands on the first W.A.S.P. album, I did not listen to any other album in my collection for a year or so, until the, next W.A.S.P album came out, and so on. The Crimson Idol, game changer. The Headless Children, mind blown, Still not Black Enough, it just never ends. Constant and consistent realism. No bubblegum rock, his works are from.the heart and soul and reality of human existance. There is no other. W.A.S.P. forever!
We have talked about W.A.S.P. before, underrated in every way. They are like Pink Floyd in the way, that each song takes you on a journey that you might not be ready for.
Recently discovered this song, and it's completely stuck with me. When you know the origin, with Lincoln's quote, St. Peter closing heaven, and the soldier begging to be let in, so powerful.
When you were talking about the soldier knocking on heavens gates, what I heard was a wounded soldier coming back from war with PTSD or some other medical problem. And that problem is making it hard for that soldier to reintegrate into society. And the government (representing heaven) is ignoring the pleas of the soldier who's now homeless.
