Dr. David, I am amazed.... I suffered with sciatica for years, then the pain went to my groin and hip. I have been to numerous PTs and was never told about strengthening glutes!!! All I got was stretching exercises. After watching your videos for one week, I am feeling relief. Thank you for sharing this info, as I have completely lost confidence in medical physicians. I worked at a desk for 50 years and always tried to walk and do yoga, but I had no idea how weak my glutes have gotten.

I have been suffering from Sciatica for last couple of years. I have been doing the
“putting the leg on the knee and pushing it down” but why it didn’t help , I have learned
watching your video just now👍 From 🇬🇧

I’ve been suffering with sciatica the past 4 months and I tried everything. Came across your videos and just started with a simple glute activation by squeezing and relaxing my glutes for 10 reps multiple times each day and I feel almost no pain. This is the only relief I’ve had in a long time. Thank you again 😭😭😭

I was wondering if you could share how you’re doing now after 10 months and what helped you to keep up with the program consistently..

I suffered one of the worst bouts of sciatica for the past 5 months. My doctor just threw a range of medications at the problem and advised lots of rest. Nothing worked. In desperation, I turned to TH-cam for stretches etc. No relief until I came across your video for the top 5 exercises. Almost instant relief! I shared with a number of family and friends with the same conclusion. Your advice is sound and your suggestions WORK!!!! I can only say a HUGE THANK YOU❤

Thank you so much, I've been in agony for over a year and was basically told by other PTs to do everything that you advise not to do. I've been doing the butt and lower abb exercises for 2 days, and I feel better already. I'm so glad I found your videos. I'm from Scotland, so there no chance of me visiting, but you've absolutely changed my life. Thank you so so much for making the videos and showing on the skeleton where the pain comes from. It makes more sense whilst visualusing if you can see it in your minds eye. 😊

I rarely comment on social media. But finding and watching your sciatica videos is the best thing that happened to me for a long time. I have been suffering for 3 years going through all the steps .. MRI, many PTs, injection, physio again.. nothing has helped as much as 1. stopping streching and 2. squeezing my glutes as often as possible following your exercises. I have been doing this for 6 weeks and see significant improvement. I still need to be more regular and also find a better solution for sleeping but definitely see the end of the tunnel. Squeezing and holding glutes feeks like I am taking off the pressure that was hurting the nerve.. I have been doing lots of other glutes exercises but only the sqeezing made the difference. A huge huge thanks

I am 60 and have had sciatica for several years possibly from my spondylolisthesis. I agree with the other commentors 100%. PT many sessions , other youtube sites relating to sciatica but nothing about what you are suggesting and strengthening the butt muscles. After one day my pain down my leg is almost zero! I am at the beginner stage and only 7 days in but I never had one day before starting this that I didn't experience pain down my legs. I am only doing about 40 reps daily every other day but will continue stepping it up and advancing to the 3rd exercise. I get that a not so strong butt muscle won't hold the nerve in the position that it belongs in and that will cause pinching. Genius! Thank you so much. God sent my husband to this spot to answer prayer for my pain which I was seriously considering a surgery to rectify. Your wisdom helped me to avoid surgery!

    1-Bridge exercise
    2a-Butt blaster
    2b-Dunkey kicks
    3-Squat straight back
Thank you so much for giving all the details to do these exercises correctly and what to watch out. I have been doing wrongly the figure 4 exercices etc by other PT.
I have to admit by just squeezing my glutes while writing this comment, I can reach my sciatica nerve. Therefore my problem is really starting by reinforcing these muscles.
Mille mercis pour ces exercices que je vais faire dans ma journée au travail devant mon écran. Je vais me mettre des pauses forcées dans la journée afin de faire ces petits exercices faciles.

I’ve been suffering for 6 months with sciatica. I know I have lateral stenosis from a C scan. I’ve just had a. MRI but haven’t got results yet.
I’ve been following you our exercises for about 2 months, and also getting fascia treatments for my super tight hamstrings. Both have helped so much with the pain.
My butt and legs have really improved, I don’t get the shooting pains down my legs, but my right leg on the outer side of my shin bone above my ankle hurts constantly. It feels bruised. Even when my right calf touches a chair while sitting, it sets that bruised pain feeling off.
Can the sciatic nerve be inflamed at the bottom of a leg and not so much at the top?

Hi Ellen, We are so glad we could be of help! Just in case you are interested we have a playlist for sciatica you might find helpful. You can access it here:
      "Sciatica Pain Exercises & Stretches"
      th-cam.com/play/PLJVIPiFvv1maZPQPPtirn4oxj8oCPuIMR.html
Start with one or two exercises, beginning with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not.
We hope you found this information helpful to you. We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

My knee issues are almost non existent since I have done your exercises. I had horrible sciatica issues years ago....that is a very persistent, and depressing pain. I wonder if you could eventually feature a thoracic pain video. I am thinking that I have a disc issue, which appears off and on. Once, in my volunteer work, I was carrying some trays, and afterward, my hand literally shook, all by itself. Sometimes I have what feels like toothache pain in the left side of my upper back inside the shoulderblade area, BEHIND the bra banda that goes across the back. It also itches all the time. I refuse to have an Xray until I figure out how to relax, and stretch that area safely. After standing at the counter in the kitchen fixing meals, and doing dishes, the pain begins to creep up. I hope you can recommend some exercises. I think many will benefit from your expertise.

David if I could I would give you the biggest hug and a kiss I would. I’ve been in non stop sciatic pain from disc herneation L4L5. Tried many different moves and every time I do I irritate the nerve more knocking me down for 2 more bed rest days (specifically extension and bird dog). Yesterday I watched this video and tried butt blaster. I was scared to be honest and not sure what to expect. I rolled back and forth 10 times. Got up to see what impact it will have and I had a strange sensation like someone grabbed my spine and extended it. Felt the decompression in the thoracic area but when I walked around a bit I noticed my nerve was less irritated so now I became obsessed with this. An hour later I tried again. And an hour after that again. By the 4 th hour my leg pain was gone like a miracle. I still didn’t wanna get excited but I woke up today and for the first time no leg pain. I’ll see how the day goes but I can’t thank you enough for this relief that brought me instant hope. God bless you

I have developed sciatic nerve pain in just this last month. The severe low back pain started on my 60th Birthday.😭 Had to cancel my birthday celebration that my daughter had planned.
I also have daily chronic back pain that I've dealt with for 39 years, at 21 years old. I am on disability because of a very rare medical disorder, so I already suffer daily with my excruitiating back pain. Now this!!! I'm going to get an MRI tomorrow.
Question, when I was doing the all fours butt lifting on each area, as soon as I lifted the leg that doesnt have sciatica pain, I suddenly have bad pain in my affected leg!! Am I supposed to continue using the butt/leg lift that causes the nerve pain in the affected leg?? I just don't want to injure my left leg anymore than what it is!
    Thank you!

Hi Shawn, we are so glad you found these exercises helpful. Yes, stretching can feel good but it can also aggravate sciatica. Just in case you're interested, we have a sciatica help playlist you might find helpful.
We'd love to hear how you are doing as you progress.🙌 Please take care!

My question is : when the pian gone, is it OK to do stretching exercises? I use to be very flexible and I don't like the feeling to be stiff and "short". I'm working with children and is difficult to work if I'm are not flexible. So I'd like to have it back but now I lost... shall I still avoid stretching at all or when I feel better I can do some stretching exercises again? If yes, may you give us advice, please, or do video about what are the best of them for people who already had troubles with sciatica?

Hi David, I had inguinal hernia surgery 18 months ago leaving me with terrible groin pain. Because of my lack of activity protruding discs and some age aporopriate degeneration I have been suffering with sciatica for several months. My pubic bone
and sacrum is always out of place along with tail bone shifting.
All stretches lead to groin pain, that seems to set off sciatica pain.
Because of groin complications is there something else I should be doing??
You are great. Been doing the glute and abdomen hold for 10 seconds several times a day.

I do a lot of squats and lunges in preparation for hiking the Grand Canyon. But I've never focused on the butt as shown in this video. In the first five minutes, your message seems contradictory: "You've got to move!" and then "Nerves don't like to be stretched!"
But then it became clear with "Strengthen you butt muscles!" Got it. Will do. Thx! Note: I was gonna count how many times you said "butt muscles" but finally gave up. Clearly, it's all about the butt muscles ;) I do pool exercises (water aeorobics) three-plus times a week. But I guess I'm not giving my butt muscles enough work.

Hey Monica! The trick to getting your glutes more active is to figure out which activities you do most and substitute them into that activity. For most people, this activity is walking. If you can start to walk, or swim in your case, with your glutes, then you will be able to drastically increase their activity and utilization. Hope this helps. In case you would like to learn how to walk with your glutes, here is a link to our video for this:

I do the exercises guided by the app Home Workout and got familiar with the donkey kicks left/right and amazed you demonstrated not that far as getting femor horizontal.
So nice to know it's more important to engage the glutes than getting femor horizontal like the app pictures it in animations.
In intermediate level I'm on now it scraps the donkey kicks 2 sets of 16 each side , for fire hydrants left/right 3 sets of 12.
I just wonder if fire hydrants exercise really do replace the donkey kicks at more intermediate level?

I noticed you did not really address anterior pelvic tilt as a main problem. Seems like that is the first correction to be made to reduce the pain.
Second, I have used backward walking to correct my pelvic tilt as well as other posture issues. While I did not have a severe sciatica problem it was leaving with issues every morning. Now I have good base for doing some of you strengthening exercises.
Last, would doing hip flexor exercises be helpful in your opinion?
