I love reading what Ben Houge write about his approach to composing this piece.
“The first thing I was told about Arcanum was the central conflict of the game: magic versus technology. This idea was so interesting and unique that I considered carefully how to best reflect it in the music. I presented a couple of ideas to the guys at Troika, and we finally settled on a sort of musical anachronism: a score centered around the styles and textures of Renaissance, medieval, and early music, but performed by a characteristic ensemble of the Victorian era, the string quartet.”
I love how ever after almost 20 years there are still someone paying tribute to the game and its OST

It's a fantastic piece of classical music hidden in an obscure game. Not a lot of ears will have the pleasure of hearing it. It deserves a rendition like this. Thank you.
And the game title itself reflected on it, " Arcanum: of steamworks and magick Obscura" The devs know it even as they were developing the game itself.
One of the greatest game ideas of the time. It was enjoyable... Though heavily, heavily flawed like most of Troika's games.
@@Grigeralto me personally these flaws added to the game feel. Because of the game's peculiarities I remember the game even more fondly. The music, the story, the artwork. A true masterpiece in it's own niche.
@@svengotal8771 I can understand that for 'some' of them lol. A lot of Troika game's bugs though were game breaking.
A good example was Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. The game is one of the best vampire based RPG's in existence... But it's been fixed by the fans over the years and still is worked on by them (same with Arcanum iirc, with fan patches fixing the game up properly).
In Vampire I remember one bug where towards the end, the trigger to end the werewolf encounter never occurred and as a result there was no way to escape it. So you just died indefinitely. Turned out if it didn't work, there was no way to salvage the save either so you had to start over :(
Obscure? it was one of the most popular games in the year it came out in Europe
So beautifull music... I completed Arcanum many times. Every time I chosen the different path, I felt like I was writing story about the character I created. But no matter, was my character a great hero who was saving the world, the necromancer who hated every human being or just an explorer, seeking for treasures in fog-shrouded corenrs of mystical world, every adventure started with this music, and every time I played for different character, the music sounded different too... While listening to this masterpiece I could easily imagine if I was evil man who had blood of his hands, who couldn't turn back anymore, or a man who had to face all terrors of the ancient land, step by step turning to a great hero. That's why Arcanum music in masterpiece.
At 1:48 the last fiddler on the right picked a wrong note, the cellist in the middle noticed and looked at him, and he replied with an embarassed grimace :P

Love this game. I remember it like yesterday. I picked it up at Wal-Mart based on the cover. Got it home, installed it, played it for hours, enthralled. I was FREEZING at the end and didn't realize the heat was off the entire time.
This game made me want to get into stringed instruments.
I want to see this soundtrack played live. The sheet music was posted onto the internet for free by the composer and I hope that there are upcoming quartets learning this soundtrack

A tad fast-paced compared to the original from Ben Houge (which lasts roughly 20 seconds more), still awesome. Must play at 0.9 speed, then it's 100% true to the original. Subscribed, hoping to see the rest of the soundtrack someday (I checked the other few tracks you made already)!

Непонятно только зачем нужно было ускорять темп относительно оригинала. Более правильная версия получается на скорости 0.75, но тогда ухудшается качество звука (и на такой скорости всё же уже получается чуть медленнее оригинала).
@@MariaEsenina Дело в том что вероятнее всего то что мы слышали в оригинале замедленно)
@@LisichnikovSevastyan оригинал на то и оригинал, что это исходный материал. Эта композиция написана для Arcanum, более того, на концерте эти же ребята исполняют эту же композицию в верном темпе.
