My mentor was a pollinator in New Jersey. He told me that the worst bee crooks are the pollinators themselves. They will steal from each other. He told me he went to one of his holding yards to prep the bees to move to a crop. To his surprise they were all strapped down and ready to be moved. Someone was ready to make off with a portion of his business. Luckily he was there and saved his investment. I had another local beekeeper stealing my queens from my colonies. I couldn't figure out why the hives were constantly superseding. He was caught by the farming going through my hives and was thrown off the farm. People need to just leave other people's stuff alone.
I may have missed a mention of it because I was reading the comments while playing the video, but these hives are now in competition for food, and I don't see how there could be enough flowering plants around there to support more than a tenth of them (just guessing because I've never noticed very many hives to land area, like that). What happened as far as the proximity to each other, and what did the bees have for a food source besides their stored honey?
Oranges were in bloom. Almost all the hives have been positively matched and returned to there owners. Beekeepers from Texas, South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota, Idaho, and California were able to recover there property. Crazy!
@@ReederBeekeeping : I'm glad they had the orange trees. So there wasn't any risk of any wars between the hives? Thank you for all of your work, and for answering my questions!
Well, the bees CAME from all over the US, but Im pretty sure he said they were all stolen at the Almond fields in Cali. Beekeepers from all over the country go there to help pollinate and get paid. Unfortunately makes it easier to steal MANY hive from MANY different people. Its becoming such a thing people are installing GPS trackers in several of their hives. Id guess this wasnt their first rodeo doin this.
Such a shame. But just a reminder that if there is money to be made. Then there is someone out there that wants to steal that money instead of working for that money… such a shame the world we live in today. SMH
In some states this is 'live stock theft" and is a hanging offence. Most people do not realize the laws that protect 'live stock' Remember that 'live stock owners' where the wealthiest people in the USA. for 100's of years so the laws protect their assests.
Wow that is disgusting stealing that many bees, that is a serious loss to the beekeeper. Beekeepers work very hard for their money and to have something like that happen, the thief has stolen a hard working guys livelihood. Luckily in this case there are ways to identify the thief so I hope he is punished to the max. Also got to wonder what he might have done in the past and gotten away with, someone probably should take a look at the rest of his hives.
From what I understand, the police got a tip and they contacted the broker and told him the bees were stolen. The broker is a third-party company that provides a service to beekeepers, but often, he doesn't know the beekeepers directly. When the police contacted him he turned the driver around and organized the situation so the police could take over. The police and the broker did a great job. 95% of the hives have been returned to their rightful owners and the remaining equipment should be identified shortly.
@@ReederBeekeeping Nice job to you, and all involved. I have had hives of my own stolen, and never recovered, I HATE beehive thieves, they are scum. Hoping you were somehow compensated for the time and effort you put into this.
Nice work ! On behalf of all beekeepers, it’s nice to know some people have your back ! That would have been a heavy lose to some hard working keepers. Hope the perps get sent to Hive Beetle jail for a spell !
Well thank you very much. I'm so glad to hear that this guy or these guys are going to get their bees back I'm a deputy sheriff and a beekeeper as well I would be crazy mad if someone stole my bees. Thank you for what you do.
In Romania we put a tracking device in a hive or two and I know a case the thieves moved the bees some 500 miles in a very remote area but the owner managed to find them
It’s amazing to see how much work the crooks did to hide the evidence of someone else’s property. I didn’t know there was a huge market for stealing bees.
Yes, it's a very expensive industry. Farmers have to pay alot of money to have beekeepers bring their bees to pollinate farms so that Farmers can produce their foods they grow. Alot of beekeepers are from all over the southeast and other areas from all over the country.
Time for us to start using RFID TAGS inside our equipment. I use hunting cameras with Cell Phone Technology to send me photos of any movement in the area as it’s captured.
Good job to the people that discovered these thefts. We need to keep our eyes out for this type of crime. I’ve got some serious cash tied up in everything bee related.
Police aren’t looking for crime. It’s up to us to report suspicious activity to police. Hive theft is a serious issue so I’m not sure why you are taking the position that you have. What is this person or broker going to gain from pointing this out?
The police have been involved and directing the process all the way through. I put the detective in a Bee suit, and we spent at least three days working together to figure out who they go to.
Great Job, beekeepers supporting beekeepers.👍 Better start camping or at least tracking your bees in pollination. 🤔In some States you can still be hung for live stock theft, 🤭gota love old laws. Blessed Days...

You’ll ALWAYS regret not buying painter’s tape.
Bee theft has been a big problem for several years now. Lots of beekeepers now install trackers into their hives.
You would think that the truck would have been held at inspection station and not just turned around. $250,000 in bees
They probably couldn't accommodate bees.

So true! It takes someone familiar with bees to steal hives to this extent.
Going to jail for trafficking a million bees. Thats at least 25 to life per bee.
That’s a lot more than a million bees. Pretty sure 100 hives are roughly 7 million bees
good job! that's horrible to lose your bees like that
They sound stolen. They sound pissed.
Wasent even aware that bees were trucked around like that.. also didnt know people stole bees lol
