  • Let's take a look at north east Tokyo together.
You all know how I feel about Tokyo Skytree. It is the tallest structure in Tokyo and Japan at 634m and changes colors with whipping lights dancing side to side. In the night, it's actually quite nice to see in front of a downtown Tokyo skyline. My issue is not what it is but what it represents to me.
It is the ultimate tourist attraction. I've been that person, don't get me wrong. In fact I've been to the top 3 times. This was before enlightenment. Oddly enough, there weren't any Japanese waiting in line to ride the elevator. Foreigners as far as the eye could see. ¥1500 for a ticket. Lots of cargo shorts. Yuck.
It stands for a new Tokyo. A Tokyo that is forgetting their Showa and pre economic bursting glory. Sumida city is not the place. It never will be. There are too many right angles and shiny surfaces. Still, if you look hard enough, there are still remnants of why people fall I love with Japan and why people keep coming back, year after year. By people, I guess I'm speaking personally.
