Just bought a 2020 low milage Atlas for my wife last week. We absolutely love it!!! It's the nicest vehicle I've ever owned and also since we bought it used, it didn't break the bank as we picked it up for $29k and saved a bunch of money! So far we are very pleased with it. Dealer gave us a great warranty too, covering us till it has 100k miles with the option to extend said warranty for a small monthly fee once the 100k is up. Taking it on a road trip to Chattanooga Tennessee next week and definitely going to go see the VW plant while we are there. Cheers from Brandon Mississippi!
Scotty man I want to say I enjoy al your videos , my dad is a mechanic of 25 years. Every time I hear you speak I feel like I’m hearing my dad speak to me ❤ y’all have the way of thinking when it comes to vehicles 🚗
My wife has a 2018 atlas 2w drive. 4 cylinder. 60,000 miles. We got it new. No problems at all so far. She loves it. She bought it because she likes to sit high and feel safe. I hit a huge deer with it, but I saw it in time to slow my speed from 60 to about 20. The abs worked great and it didn't bend the car at all. Of course it busted the grill and all the plastic crap and punctured the ac cooler. But hey.. that stuff is cheap. We have it full coverage so just a deductible. Shop fixed it up and all is well runs and looks like new.
I just bought 2022 a 4 cylinder as well but will arrive next week, i was afraid that it will be under power considering how heavy the vehicle is. Is it an area of concern?
Never thought I’d see the day that Scotty said a VW was good. Personally, I love them. Have just acquired a 2004 Golf TDI with only 278k miles and it drives like a dream with no major issues. Little bit of rust here and there, some rubberised plastics looking a bit scruffy, but otherwise it’s a good solid motor with a full year’s MOT.
I bought a (new) 2013 golf 2-door TDI tech package back in 2012 and today I have almost 275K miles on it. Like you mentioned, plastic pieces and such are deteriorating and many repairs $$$ but hopefully I can continue to maintain this car and make it to 500K miles. No engine or transmission issues yet; definitely fun to drive.
@@hix9306 yes we still love it! Still zero issues. It’s been very reliable so far. We’ve been through a lot of cars over the years and it’s great. Comfortable, solid, tons of space and the vr6 sounds really good. Actually we’ve never had a car that didn’t need something fixed within the first year so I’m very surprised considering the stigma around VW.
The 3.6 Atlas has actually been a very reliable SUV. The 3.6 VR6 engine is not new to VW/Audi. Even the 2.0T Atlas has been reliable. VW has come a long way in the past 10 years. I do agree with Scotty with the 2.0T being strained more pulling all that weight. It probably will have more engine issues when it gets over 150k miles. But even so, for a VW turbocharged engine to go 150k miles with little maintenance is saying a lot about how far they have come. I see tons of Tiguans with the 2.0T from all the way back in 2011 that have well over 100k miles and they’ve been reliable for people. 5k mile oil change intervals with 0W40 Castrol full synthetic oil and regular fluid drain and fills, these cars can easily last 150k miles.
Most if not all cars brand new will be reliable. If they break down no sweat, warranty covers cost. How reliable after warranty is the big question., Everyone here says how great the car is when they are new or fairly new. No real data on these cars as far as long term.
We’ve owned ours 2019 new VR6 and still hasn’t given us and issues. We almost wish we did so we can take advantage of the warranty. It’s the first car my mom has bought at the end of the lease. We lease every two years and have owned almost every brand. The Atlas has been the most reliable. Go figure😂
After 2013 VW reliability has improved a lot. Most buyers like them because they are quiet, comfortable, handle sharply, they feel planted on the road especially 4Motion models, and are very nicely built and perfect ergonomically. Volkswagen and Toyota are the biggest car makers in the world because they are the best middle-class car makers. Toyota is cheaper in quality, clumsy in design but will never break down ever, VW is more classic, and elegant, but not as reliable.
Are you a 🤡? VW is trash compared to Toyota, name one model that is on par with the legendary status of Toyota Landcruiser, 4runner , Tundra , even the Supra. VWs are for people who wants a German car but can't afford a Benz or a BMW. Nice try VW salesman 😂
@@ericchen776 I'm guessing they are cutting corners in those Mexican VW factories? Glad I'm not from US. Volkswagen is my favourite cars to drive by far and parts are fairly cheap.
So my wife and I recently bought a 2018 (I normally would never buy a first model year of any vehicle) it had 135,000km when we bought it and now is closer to 150,000km and despite its high mileage it drives exactly like a brand new one! Whereas our 2016 Chevy Equinox (also V6) was lower mileage, it's age was severely starting to show. Needless to say, we never thought we'd buy a VW, but after research and testing the other vehicles in this category it was the best option for us and we are extremely happy with it
I recently purchased a new 2020 4 motion 2.0 turbo Volkswagen Tiguan and absolutely love my new ride . Never thought I’d buy a Volkswagen but I did and am very satisfied with it 👍🏻
My son and daughter-in-law just bought one of these rigs. All I can say as a Toyota fan..this is a very nice SUV. Smooth quiet and comfortable. Very nice indeed!
Watch a VW (even a small one) on the highway. They look more stable than most other cars. I liked the driving experience in every VW I’ve ever owned. Some were even pretty reliable.
I'm from Europe and even here VW right now has a reputation for poor reliability and not being very honest with the Diesel gate and all that. They used to make very solid cars for an honest price.
@@haVVk22 If it is the 1.9 TDI ALH engine ..those are legendary for easily going up to 1.000.000 km, but they have changed all that..see how great are the TSI/TFSI engines they make nowadays and all the problems they bring along.
Sherpa I have a 2006 Seat Leon with the volkswagen 1.9 tdi engine, I have 203 000 km on it. My dad has a 2011 Passat and my grandfather a 2011 Touran, both have the same problems at the same time, It’s like they do it on purpose.
Vw is straight garbage. Scotty you should get toyota highlander or honda pilot. problem free and peace of mind for at least 15-20years.. Vw is money pit. Very poorly made and suffer from very low reliablity.
I have a 2020 Atlas Cross Sport SE with tech. The VR6 engine is very smooth and the 4motion AWD did great in all the snow we got this winter. Its listed as a mid size SUV but feels like a full size. I took it to get the windows tinted and the tiny guy said good lord that thing is wide! Didn't feel like it would fit through the garage doors. Lol.
@@jessieh.8443 The only issue we have had with it was a recall for the control links in the suspension were bad / loose and making noise so they replaced it for free with the warranty. It's been trouble free now with almost 35,000 miles.....great vehicle.
The V6 3.0TDI VW Touareg is a tank here in Europe, it reaches a high mileage (aprox. 250000) without any problems if taken care of. The same diesel engine is placed among the vag group on models like VW Phaeton, Audi A6, A8, Q7, Porsche Cayenne etc. Americans don't know how nice is the feeling you get on an automatic diesel. ;)
I had a 2009 Passat V6 made in Germany. It was a well built car and quite peppy. I bought it used with 25K miles and drove it 75k more. No engine or transmission issues but electronics started giving issues. I was then in a car accident and it was totaled. I went back with Toyota. I put 170K miles on a Camry with no major problems. This time I got an used Avalon. I miss my Fender Sound System and big brakes, but that is about all.
Hello Mr. Kilmer, I watch your videos religiously as you are the BEST and most trustworthy and most honest mechanic I have ever come across! My wife and I just leases a brand new 2023 VW Atlas SE with 2.0 Turbo 4-cylinder front drive only engine (since we live in Florida and we don’t need the AWD- my brother has (2021) one with a V6 and AWD since he lives in Minnesota with heavy snow and has a large sailboat weighing around 3k pounds to two. My point is that when we got ours a month ago and the AC in the front, middle, and rear are not cold. Only “cool”. My other car being a crappy 2015 Kia Soul blasts winter cold air without any issue. We took the Atlas to the VW dealer service dept they could not find anything wrong other than they added. Fresh Freon. That didn’t do any good. It’s still not legitimately COLD. The third row seat vents is worse off being warmer than cool. What is causing the Atlas to not produce cold enough air temperature when the AC is set at Max? Is the compressor faulty or some sort of computer programmed that’s flawed?
Oh something is definitely wrong! We bought our 19 atlas new VR6 and we absolutely love it. Our house we keep the ac 67-68 all year long so we like it cold and the atlas gets so cold we have to turn the temp up. I would take it to another dealer for a second opinion.
Almost got an Atlas when I got my Tiguan last year. Love both and would buy another Tiguan tomorrow! Super smooth and practical, and honestly exceeded the fuel economy ratings in the real world. I’m no slow poke, so that says something. It even has the 4Motion all wheel drive. For a compact SUV, it is definitely the most fun to drive of it’s competitors.
Kathleen Biederstadt Honestly, it’s no slouch. If you are used to V6 type power numbers, you may find it a bit slow. It’s a great commuter, and it really shines on the highway. I drove down to Georgia a few months after I got it, and the 1600 mile trip was great. Seats are really comfortable too. It is one of the largest in the segment, but it is still easy enough to park in the city.
OMG I've been considering buying this car for months now. Planning on buying in January. Decided to pop in here to see what Scotty had to say about it and got so excited that he not only approved it, but OWNS one. Def getting it now!!

I love my 2018 Honda Pilot EX-L 4WD WITH HONDA SENCE. Lots of working room, sipmple 6 speed auto currently average 24 mpg. Eco mode off its zippy enough.
Just traded mine in after 2.5 years of ownership had enough of vw problems it was in the shop 8 times for odd problems last one was a fuel pump replacement. It also started to squeak and rattle after 20k miles got a Mazda way better quality and reliability good luck if you own one of these atlas
Thank you Scotty. Ive worked at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga since 2011 and I can say that Volkswagen really does care about there products that are made here in the USA. We are starting to make the ID4 and I will tell you that the weld quality in the body shot is top Quality. Hope to see you drive one of these ID4’s in the future.
We just bought one of these - a VW atlas cross sport. We live in Canada and just had three feet of snow. My car went no where however the atlas was a beast in the snow. It’s a great car. No issues. Made in the USA and we have the 6 cylinder engine. Crappy on gas. About 12 to 13 l per 100km - 19 to 17 mpg in the city. Better on the highway. I would recommend one of these if you have a few kids and need room. Smooth ride. Definitely not a speed demon but great to take to the slopes and on longer trips. I do wish the quality was a wee bit more like the Touareg but at the present price point the atlas is a decent value. I agree with Scotty even though it’s not a Toyota. It’s sad but the only American car I would even consider is a f150. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and the big three lost genX - at least in my circle. The I’m happy VW is in Chattanooga - needed spell check for that. Thanks for your hard work Scott.
Just caught up on Scotty’s review! I have a 2018 and getting 22 mpg around suburban town and 26 mpg on highway trips. It’s the V6 SEL trim and like it so much that I purchased it at the end of the 3 year lease.
My 2019 2.0 S model averages 26.1 mpgs (VDUBER on Fuelly). I do mostly country driving and am easy on the throttle. The 2.0 front drive is faster in most scenarios than the 6 with 4wd (weight penalty). Last year of the 6 year warrantee and I got 7k off of list price. Hell of a bargain I think.
Ive owned mine since may 2019 vw atlas se v6 4motion w technology....... sway bar link issues, noise upon acceleration but goes away they also had a recall for emission issue's. Everything has been fixed except the acceleration noise from 0-30 mph which they could never fix and is an issue on all atlases. I still love this comfortable suv. Hopefully when i trade it in in 2022, these common issues will be fixed.
Your shoulder bumped the handle . The handles have sensor to open and close the door Scotty . I have a 2006 Passat and a 2016 Tiguan both very solid cars . No issues and the Passat have been with me 5 years
i like the design and simple layout of controls in the cabin. Everything makes sense. I hate some of the newer american or japanese cars with so many buttons or touchscreens that isnt easy for someone new to the car to just get in and be able to drive and control a few basic features like radio control or a/c. I think the Atlas is a great suv and id consider it when it gets a slightly better engine.

Taking it on a road trip to Chattanooga Tennessee next week and definitely going to go see the VW plant while we are there.
Cheers from Brandon Mississippi!

He didn't buy this, he just borrowed it for a test-drive and videoreview.
I don't think he owns it. It had a manufacturer plate on the back.
Not only did he not buy it, he probably got paid to do the review...
I wish it would rain out here. Geez.

Yes! We just bought the SEL 4motion version a few weeks ago. Nicest (and biggest) car ive ever owned. Wife and I are so happy with it.
Planning to get one, how is it after 8 months now?
We love our V6 atlas! Not a single issue. Car drives and feels so luxurious. First car in 20 years I’m buying not leasing so that says a lot.
Still good ?
@@hix9306 yes we still love it! Still zero issues. It’s been very reliable so far. We’ve been through a lot of cars over the years and it’s great. Comfortable, solid, tons of space and the vr6 sounds really good. Actually we’ve never had a car that didn’t need something fixed within the first year so I’m very surprised considering the stigma around VW.
Owned a 2023 Atlas V6 SE with tech for a couple of months now. The more I drive it, the more I love it.
My son has the 21 Atlas with all the bells and whistles. It rides very nice. Very reliable so far. Thanks for sharing
Most if not all cars brand new will be reliable. If they break down no sweat, warranty covers cost. How reliable after warranty is the big question., Everyone here says how great the car is when they are new or fairly new. No real data on these cars as far as long term.
VWs are reliable and easy to work on
We’ve owned ours 2019 new VR6 and still hasn’t given us and issues.
Toyota is cheaper in quality, clumsy in design but will never break down ever, VW is more classic, and elegant, but not as reliable.
you nothing about cars if you think VW is higher quality than toyota. in the U.S. VW is trash
VW quality cannot compare to Toyota on any level, especially on quality.

2 years later, Scotty: “I was wrong about the 2021 VW Atlas. Boy was I wrong, It’s still a rolling pile of crap!”
Needless to say, we never thought we'd buy a VW, but after research and testing the other vehicles in this category it was the best option for us and we are extremely happy with it
I'm not surprised Scotty's given this VW a good review it's brand new!
I recently purchased a new 2020 4 motion 2.0 turbo Volkswagen Tiguan and absolutely love my new ride . Never thought I’d buy a Volkswagen but I did and am very satisfied with it 👍🏻

My take on the VW Tiguan 😊 It's a great car for the first 100k miles or so. After that, good luck! And frequent oil changes for a VW are a must.
VW can make cars of the future but cant perfects reliability of today !
I'm from Europe and even here VW right now has a reputation for poor reliability and not being very honest with the Diesel gate and all that. They used to make very solid cars for an honest price.

The V6 3.0TDI VW Touareg is a tank here in Europe, it reaches a high mileage (aprox. 250000) without any problems if taken care of.
I’m buying in a few weeks and Tiguan is on my short list. I’ve heard people say its under powered when things open up I’ll test drive one.
Martin da Silva the only people who don’t like Volkswagen are people who’ve never had one! Love my jetta
Gunnar Geroy so true! I don’t think I’ll ever drive anything else, unless I have a second car.
7:31 That out of nowhere horn beep is the first sign of the electrical problems you’re about to experience. 😂

Scotty secretly loves VW

One thing most people don’t know about VR6 Atlases…. They sound AMAZING with an exhaust on them!!!!
Volkswagen should have vr6 engines in more of their cars because those things not only sound nice but are more reliable than the tsi engines.
They won’t, because the VR6 is a gas guzzler.
