Those are some good dogs right there. You're so right, when I was a kid, I was out on my bike all day long and my dog ran along and followed all day, every day. He knew to stay close, and, if anything, being a kid, I didn't look after HIM as well as I should have. But, he drank from puddles and caught up and lived a long happy life. And, he'd defend me with all his little carcass had too. He almost never went on a leash, he just hung with me.

As I have always said, it's not my job to keep track of my dog,
it's my dog's job to keep track of me. And they do.

You know that’s the truth, I don’t know why here in USA , people stresses out for their dog , I remember when I was a kid also , our dog never got trained they knew how to stay close . Never had a fence or used a leash , every morning when we got ready for work they will be wagging their tales and happy we were getting ready to go work the land . And yes , they always walked with us or running around closely but they never took off . What a memory that’s for sure .

@@maxgonzalez81 What I believe it all boils down to, is this... "Govt." (of any flavor) wants to condition people to obey THEM. ANY topic at hand that they can capitalize on, they WILL/DO ! What I wanna know is, WHY is it such a big deal that dogs are on a leash and their waste is picked up... but cat owners are free to let their animals roam free and use everyone's flower beds as a toilet, and that's "ok"? I don't want a cat scratching my car's paint while getting up on and getting down off, when I don't want them on my car to begin with.

You make a valid point. People talk about leash trainng like it is the be all and end all but my thoughts on the subject is for people to ask themselves if it is really practical to keep this subspecies of the wolf under control at all times. They talk about neurotic and nervous dogs and I often wonder whether those dogs see any appreciable off leash time just to be dogs. Growing up we never tied up our dogs and they never wandered or bothered the neighbors dogs or had any behavioral issues. In their older years, they liked to accompany the one old fella, who was our neighbor, whose habit it was to walk to church about half a mile away on Sunday mornings. They went right inside with him, sat down and were not a problem in any way during the service. Now, I understand that the world has changed and it is suddenly a much smaller place......even in the small towns but dogs don't know that and I don't think that their needs have changed withe the times. I am speculating that many of the problems we see in dogs today are the result of the world having changed but they are having a hard time adapting to it.

Admittedly Stonnie, I was that “boring guy”, and not the “party guy.” My dogs would not come when called, and would bolt out the door and run away. Then my yellow Lab got sick and my black Lab got injured. That was years ago. Soon, I hope to get another chance with another dog, armed with a skill set and wisdom from years of watching your videos. Thanks!!

This is exactly the relationship I have with my favourite dog. I often loose my way in the wilderness, but he can ALWAYS find our way back to the car. He has a built in GPS, and it never fails. He doesn’t necessarily follow our own track back, he just takes the shortest, most direct way. When he notices me becoming insecure in “unknown land”, he sits down watching me fussing around. At the moment I look at him, he jumps up saying
    - Hey, follow me!
and off we go, uphills an downhills, following tracks and paths until we get back to wherever we left that car.
He is terrific, my guide dog, and we are having a great time. Couldn’t do without him. He gives me life quality, because I never fear to get lost ♥️

My pup loves a long retrieve. Drop a dummy walk a few hundred metres and then send her back. She’s so fast and loves the free run, pick up and return. You’d be amazed how much extra distance she covers at full free running speed when most dogs have to just plod along with their owner on the leash for hours.

This is what I consider a happy dog life! I'm lucky to have open fields, rivers, creeks and parks nearby where my girl can roam free and always check in make sure I'm nearby when she's living her best life. I can't imagine raising her in a busy city, I'm sure it's doable, but it would take a lot more effort.

Love your philosophy on dog freedom! I've adopted this, and my 1 year old lab prefers when I grab the e-collar over a harness because he know's he'll get to walk off leash and roam on his own. He always "checks in" after 50-100 yards of separation, and you can see how much joy he gets from the freedom.

    • @dortenielsen8253
      @dortenielsen8253 2 ปีที่แล้ว

What has an e-collar to do with this?
Our dogs should do that without an e-collar and without a harness. The only reason you need a collar, is you need some place to put the statutory dog tag

Be a fun partner to your dog
I am always coming across people who are uptight with their dogs and it’s sad to see this beautiful animal all stressed out because the owner is not doing their job and being a good partner….. I have a 11 month old black lab and he is unbelievably well behaved and people always say wow how did you get him to be so good: I always bring up Stonie and direct them to his video’s.
There ain’t no magic here folks just calm down put in some honest time with your dog and things will work themselves out.

Thanks Stonnie, great video and great reminder. I’m guilty sometimes of being a little over reactive when out with my lab at the off leash area. We have some good ones here and Saje has a blast at them with other dogs. But as I’ve mentioned before she just doesn’t have the recall down to where I’m comfortable when I need her to come. So I tend to maybe over react and just need to work on it and to trust she will be fine and will find me. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤞🏻👍🏻😎🇨🇦 I wish I knew some area farmers that would allow us to adventure on their property.

Dennis, what do you do when your dog does not come back when you call him? I have 5 year old beagle, that can not be trusted. Once she has ecollor on, even when i dont use it she behaves really good. Was constantly working with her, decided to give it a try yesterday, almost lost her when she spotted few rabbits. All i read online is that beagles can not be trusted, due to their passion and love to chase wild animals. Can you please comment on this? I see your points about being fun party organizer, also having two dogs help because one follows other (not the case with my dog) What would you do if one of the dogs will not come back if you call them, when you walk your dogs. In general she is good, but once in a while a while she looses it.

I know if you feed a horse too much oats he will kick the stall apart, so giving a dog the right type of chow can improve on temperment and behavior. LOL I have a Jack mix now and her paws got all swollen up and she was lethargic and the wife took her to the vet. they said she needed special chow cuz she was alergic to chicken! Lots of money later and antibiotics she was doing fine.

Try a licking mat that sticks to the side of the tub. Smear peanut butter on it. Put enough on that will last throughout the bath AND when you get her out to dry her off. This is another example of being “fun” with your dog. Make it a pleasant experience. Dogs love peanut butter!
