    You can actually put the heat deflector directly on the charcoal basket handles. In fact that is how Dennis designed it to be used, rather than on the mid level grate. Now you can cook indirect on the mid level, the top level, and the elevated grate on top of the main grate.

    Great review Dave! You covered all the things that make a KK so great plus the use of refractory cement make it a durable lifetime smoker.I have owned my KK for about 3 years and it looks like new and is awesome.

      Ha! It was one of the main reasons I went for the bronze metallic tiles as it totally looks like a glitter ball. During the summer, it's looks great during the day 😃

    Like how they added a spot specifically for temp controllers. Not that it matters because I will never own a kk unless I win the lottery lol.

    Excellent review, mate! I have the exact model and color, and purchased around the same time (2-3 yrs ago). I agree with everything you reviewed, and love the KK! I have a Boston Butt on this morning for some pre-Thanksgiving celebration! Cheers!

    Interesting vid. I'll look at my weber with renewed contempt. BTW, wot you got there is a damper, a dampener just makes something wet.

    Great review Dave im in the UK and so wish there was an agent to directly buy from, what warranty is there and hopefully assuming its world wide, plus also spares and accessories and would love to see one in the flesh as its a lot of hard earned

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don, I'm a pommie living in Oz. My advice would be to go to the site and contact Dennis the owner. He might know where you can go and see one in the UK. I'm sure he will have Komodo's going across to the uk several times per year. The Komodo comes with a decent spares kit, all of the accessories are online. Get in contact with Dennis Linkletter he will help you out, he is a great guy.

    I was perfectly happy with my Kamado till I saw this review....now I want a KK!! Do you have recommendations for sourcing these in Australia?
    Great review, mate,

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rob, go onto the Komodo Kamado website and use the contact email. It will be answered pretty quickly by Dennis Linkletter the owner. He is based in Bali and is awesome to deal with. He regularly has deliveries to Australia, I know he had space in a container a couple of weeks ago. If you can afford it, don't hesitate, the best BBQ you will ever buy 😃

    Can you comfortably cook a 20lb brisket on that size Komodo? Thinking of getting one and trying to decide between this or the 32. The most I would ever cook is 3 racks of ribs or one huge brisket.

  • @pjwtube
    @pjwtube 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice review! You did not mention the size of this grill. I am guessing it’s the 23” not the 32”? Also how long does a full load of charcoal last at say 800*?

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is the 23" at the time of the video this was the only size. I now have a 32" and will be doing a review over the next month or two. I'd saw a full basket at 800f would last a couple of hours. At 225f I have had over 15-20 hours.

    • @pjwtube
      @pjwtube 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I do pizzas sometime so higher temp endurance is a question I had and no reviews address this. Even Dennis was vague when I spoke to him.
      I have seen a number of your reviews on various grills. All good. For just low and slow which do you prefer(capacity aside)... kamado style or your Stumpy style grill?

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter. If I had a choice of only one grill to do everything, it would still definitely be the KK. For Low and Slow only, I would probably go for my Gravity Fed. Sometimes the KK is too efficient with heat retention and struggles to get a decent airflow at 225f, I'd cook low and slow closer to 250-275f to ensure the smoke flows and doesn't become stagnant. I've cooked pizza's on the KK at 600-700 to great effect, never any issues.

    Is it difficult to add charcoal or wood to the fire when smoking for long periods of time?

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't really need to add charcoal, as this can go for 20+ hours between refueling. The grate is hinged so you can lift it and add wood, not too difficult.

      Hard to mention a price on a TH-cam video as prices change over time and people keep watching, years later. Just head to the KK website and current pricing will be on there.

  • @charlesworniv611

    Thanks for this review. Not many video reviews of the KK out there (or at least none that I could find).
    You mentioned early on in the video that you also have a KJ and Primo that you use. How do those grills compare to the KK? I know quality wise the KK is superior. I am asking more from a taste standpoint. If you were to cook the same meal on all three at the same time can you notice a difference in the taste? How often do you use the KJ and Primo now that you have a KK? The reason I ask is because I would love to one day own a KK and am trying to decide if I should get the new 21 KK to accompany my Big Joe or get two (the 21 KK and 23 KK or 23 KK and 32 KK) and sell my KJ.
    Any information you are willing to provide will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Chuck

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Charles, I only have the Primo left now and that will be going next week, so will only have the Komodo. The big difference is the depth of the KK, you have at least 5 different heights for cooking on, this makes a huge difference. It means if you are doing hot and fast you can move in or out of the flare up range. Also the very thick deflector and height differential makes a big difference. The Primo and KJ are good but both are not as well made or have the adjustments the KK has.
      I’d say both produce good food but the KK is next level but that comes with a huge price tag. If you can afford the KK get it without hesitation, if you can’t afford it then the KJ and Primo are great alternatives. Hope this helps.

    Love your review, if you are cooking and it rains, is there risk cracking it?

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do ny damage at all. I've seen them cooking in heavy snow, so I'm pretty sure rain won't hurt it. If you are thinking about buying one, contact Dennis Linklatter at Komodo Kamado and he will answer and concerns you have
