  • On an around Australia trip of a life time during 1989, my wife and I met up with good friends and travelled to the top of Cape York Peninsula via the Old Telegraph track, driving across the Jardine river in some top old beasts...got a few clips, thought I'd chuck them up and share.

    I did Cape York in 1989 in my FJ 45 in 1989 as well. I took ferry heading up but crossed the Jardene heading back. The Troopy only just made it and despite removing fan belts and tarping up it swallowed a bit of water but kept running. good quality video for 1989

    Ahhh, someone that understands how harsh the old shorties are. There was one item I chose to spend all my savings on before I left and it wasn't a winch as you could see in the Gunshot vid...It was a Super Ride suspensin kit, which I was very greatful for, it worked very well in smoothing out the corrugations etc and good articulation....before the rear shackle turned inside out.

  • @onecrabbyman
    @onecrabbyman  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ex Army IIA in the other vids...Yep, 186. Didn't catch that on footage crossing the Jardine.
    Series III...My memory's fading but I THINK 186 also. They both towed decent sized caravans that they had in storage during the Cape York trip.
    The FJ40...Original 4.2 donk with extractors, 2" system, Uni filter and jetted carb.
    Cheers.

    FJ40 tough as nails but body will rust eventually. Series LR body virtually rust proof, engine and gear-train temperamental but you can keep rebuilding forever. If you want a vehicle to last you a lifetime and you are prepared to constantly maintain it get the LR.

    • @onecrabbyman
      @onecrabbyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. Yes you are correct, something that is proven today. Looking for an early model vehicle to rebuild is much easier starting with a sound body and repair the drive train.
      The LR did have a metal fire wall and the early chassis was prone to rust, unless you were lucky enough to acquire a particular ex army model with fully galvanised chassis 👍🏼

    • @78a67h
      @78a67h ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@onecrabbyman I didn't know that military spec LR had fully galvanised chassis, maybe only in Australia. True firewall, tail-gate and I think the windscreen frame (partly galvanised) are steel so they may eventually rust.

    • @onecrabbyman
      @onecrabbyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@78a67h yes but for some reason not all military specs, I just don’t know the selected ones or why. Very lucky to get hold of one of these👍🏼

    Loved my Landy's. We crossed by barge. Was unaware until today that you could cross for nix. Well done Blokes...👌

      Hey Jay, Jay was actually the name of my mate driving the ex army Landy. Yep awesome vehicle Jay, always liked the county 110. The tough old Holden 186 use to go hand in hand with the series 2 & 3, unless of course you're a fan of keeping them original. The largish hole through the chassis always intrigued me, was it not for running a drive shaft through for operating implements? Not sure you can still drive the Jardine anymore!? We came back via barge just so we could experience both ways. Thanks for the comment Jay 👍🏼

    • @vk5jajay147
      @vk5jajay147 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@onecrabbyman Yes that hole if for PTO shafts etc. goes right through out the rear. You could drive a Slasher, plough etc etc via the PTO shaft from the Transfer case. My first Landy ( all SWB) had the 186 holden donk in it, but I returned it to the factory 2.25 4 pot screamer..LoL. Main reason being that on our first trip up the cape, We done the Gunshot vertical drop (Thought I was going to die :) ) Straight down nose into the mud. That was all good, but snapped both rear axles, and had to snig home in 4x4 high driving off only the front diff from a little place up far north Qld called Yarraden to Caboolture. Just over 2000 kms. But it was a great experience. Thanks for the reply :)

    • @onecrabbyman
      @onecrabbyman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jay Johnston, would be a bit of a worry running around Cape York in only front wheel drive but all turned out ok for you and like you say, it all adds to the experience. Another mod Jay did to the ex army was a salisbury diff, real nice rig it was, maybe just not to the purist but very functional. The amount of comments you get on the gunshot about “we should have driven it”. But unless you’re there at that time, that’s exactly what we were concerned with....Smacking the bottom in the mud, doing damage and having one or more vehicles incapacitated in such a remote area. All great experience in the end.
