Great tutorial, thank you! I've got all the music theory background, and I've composed and arranged pieces (mostly hymn arrangements), but sometimes all that can get in the way. I tend to overthink and overcomplicate things, and that quickly leads to a writer's block. What I got out of this video was that I should take a step back and simplify. The bit on Motifs reminded me of the Sonata I wrote years ago. Sonata form is all about motifs and variations. I bet the Sonata form could be easily carried over into Ambient music, at a much slower pace. Lots of ideas to think about. Thank you!
Thanks for your super comment 👍 between composing and improvising , I think we each have our own method. Yes, motifs are very useful in all types of music. An ambient piece in sonata form - that would be interesting 😊
Thank you! This tutorial hit me at just the right time. As a novice, I appreciate your patience in explaining the technique while still calling out the appropriate theory behind it. I am learning theory, so any grounding of technique in theory is like mortar between the bricks.
Glad you liked it. Before I knew what music was 😢 I realised I could get sort of tunes just by playing the black notes but it took a while to put it all together 😊
Wery good video, thank you! Pentatonic is pure magic! :) One thing about dissonance - I'm not properly educated myself, but if i remember correctly, they never was considered a bad thing. Even more, in "classical" music, counterpoint specifically, clearly stated - you SHOULD prefer more dissonant intervals if possible to create resonance, and there are whole system on wich beat you can play consinent intervals and in wich you actually need to choose dissonant. Again i can be wrong, but if your music piece lack dissonant intervals it would be extremely bland and sound bad, coz perfectly continent intervals doesn't have any movement or individuality. At least this is how i remember this 😂
Hi - you're probably right although I don't have any formal classical composition training. I do like dissonance as long as it makes sense 😊 This kind of Ambient can certainly have a little dissonance but not too much I'd suggest 😄
Awesome stuff. Please keep making these tutorial videos Ian. ❤👍🙏

Glad you found it useful. Many people shy away from theory but it opens many possibilities 👍
