I lived through these times and hearing Jerry sing this live for the next few years was chilling , dark and a desperate plea for love and reason. That's how I felt it then and over 50 years later, still so sadly true as then. Never give up, keep shining your love light & leave it on.⚡️🖖🏽⚡️🎸⚡️
Wow, I didn't know this was written about Altamont. I believe my dad was there. I was born a month later. No wonder I had the sticker with these words on my truck windo for so many years. Close to home, still..... One way or another this darkness IS giving. So much love, thats how.
There was a show where Dead and Co opened with this song and after they play it Bob asks the crowd, “how are y’all feeling tonight?” Then after the crowd screams he responds with, “us too.” I’ve been looking for that version for a while.
I just heard another G.D. "cover band" somewhere on youtube just prior to hearing this. Those guys were excellent musicians and played the song great just like all the "cover bands". And I hated them just like all the others. Then I stumbled on these guys. I had not much hope yet again. I saw Weir was in it which was a good sign but I really didn't hold out much hope. 5 seconds into it and I'm on high alert. WAIT A MINUTE! What's going on here? These guys sound great! They are noodling around a slow beginning just easing into it. Actually, more like letting it evolve! I am watching and listening in literal disbelief. These guys don't suck! They're not just doing a great rendition of this song. Everybody does that and they all miss the mark. Hence, for me, they all suck. But these guys sounds real. In touch. Connected. Coordinated. I listen to each guy on his instrument which is hard for me because, believe me, I know nothing about music. But I know I like each of these guys and the way they play IMMENSELY! This is unheard of for me. It is NOW OFFICIAL! I am bowled over! Best Grateful Dead song I've eve heard by a Non-Grateful band. Yes, I know Bobby is in there. I am sure Bobby is the leading vibe/spirit but those other guys also seem like they are sincerely in that same space. I love the fact that I love the guy on lead guitar. Normally I hate the lead because they always seem to be trying to hard to be "amazing". He wasn't trying to be or play Jerry Garcia but he seemed to have his own Garcia-esque-ness. I neve say that!!!! I loved him! I loved all the others! Hey Bobby, if you put this band together you deserve to be immensely proud because you did a great job! Best ever! Thank you!
The drummers were also with GD. Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. Maybe their older selves made you not recognize them? The lead is John Mayer, with Oteil Burbridge on bass and Jeff Chimenti on keys.
this is one of their best songs, it always sounds great when they play it, mayer just kills it on the guitar, love it.................................................
2016, 2017, 2018 Dead and Company were AMAZING! 2019 was the beginning of the end. Bob lost too many steps to keep up with Mayer. NEVER forget Jerry's Music is super complicated at times. TIME waits for NO ONE>
rjcote45 Came to love Dead and co JM heard Althea fell in love with grateful dead, had Bobby on late show and they got together JM management team did the practical and Dead and co was born 2016 We are all now blessed with this wonderful music Thanks grateful dead members And new members What a band Going 6 yrs later mega tour this yr Thanks for your nice comments
Question for guitar players: when John is just jamming to the intro… is he playing just one scale the entire time? Or is he kinda jumping between scales that fit in the melody?
Sounds like he’s playing both E pentatonic minor and E pentatonic major depending on the phrase. He might be playing the E blues scale as well. I haven’t sat down to try and transcribe it note for note but all those scales would fit depending on what kind of mood you want to put across.
I agree. Jack would be dope as a frontman for gd, he’s not really a fan though. I read an interview where he talked about being into a lot of source material of songs the dead covered, but isn’t really into them. He respects them though
In the original arrangement the "one way or another" doesn't come in until after the three verses. Ever since they brought it back in 91 they've been singing that part between the verses as well. Not sure why, I think the song works much better structured the original way.
Really miss Jerry on this song . His vocals just had more passion. I miss Jerry n general. I’m glad these guys are playing and it’s good just not the same which of course is understandable 🙏👌☮️😊

I always wondered what that box Oteil was standing on while he’s barefoot, but apparently its so he can feel the Bass vibrations. Pretty awesome!

Hugh Snyder I miss Jerry on EVERY SONG!
One of the Dead's more heartfelt, and meaningful songs. Turn it up.....
Excellent! See you in George, Washington! 🎶
They weren't ugly they just were just nearly spoiled. Very little of my box lasted beyond two or three days.
Bob started looking like Jerry
If it ain’t broke, Don’t fix it!
I dig the Cold Weather boots lol

Patience

Those pants!
So a blues in E.
Sou o único brazuka aqui?
Bob's still hanging on to that bluesy voice I see
Your hair lookin crazy Bobbi...
Is better tha the original: great bass guitar: not better the original, seriously, but very good version...3/5 of original deads..has it weight...
M
His guitar leads had almost nothing to do with the lyric content. This version had little to do with the origins of this song.
Why are they playing slow!?
They're not for this song, but perhaps your thought process is?! One way or another...
Another awful performance from this guy
What guy are you referring to?
Totally agree. How did he get the gig?
