As with most of Peter Gabriel's lyrics, it takes several listens to fully understand his message. He likes to use metaphors and religious symbols in his music. He has a spiritual quality you can feel.

A single sentence came to me: “Why do we hurt each other so, when we know together we are elemental-is it because we are?”

I’ve seen several clips from this concert. All outstanding. I adore the melding of Western rock/pop with African rhythms. Have you heard anything from the group Afro-Celt Sound System? Both Peter Gabriel and Robert Plant have sung on their albums. Gabriel and Plant have both been fascinated by and have incorporated African rhythms and scales into their solo work.

Thank you so much for this. For me……the concert (Secret World Tour) is comparable (emotionally) to Pink Floyd’s (Pulse 1994 live) concert….. Both touch my spirit and my emotions. The excellence and the mastery of the music and vocals are at another level as compared to most other artists. The sound techs and special effects just adds so much to the stellar performances.
We all should just sit and think sometimes…..there’s nothing wrong with that.❤️🙏🎅🌲🇨🇦

Two stages on the concert. Regular stage Peter called masculine and the round was more feminine about women and love. You should react to the first two songs of concert someday consecutive. Talk to Me and Steam on masculine stage. More rock than just awesome performance like this song. Excellent So many more awesome performances from this same concert with Paula Cole. Secret World concert. Paula Cole had just joined this tour a few days prior as replacement before this filming.

This is like Don’t Give Up, Biblical Proportions. It’s about feelings of personal failure manifesting in relationship trouble, the veritable blood of Eden. It’s like he’s asking, is being granted eternal grace worth it? Are men and women just not able to handle it? But oh, the union can feel so strong. It’s hopeful but only painfully so. The studio version with Sinead O’Connor is perhaps my favorite of his.

I don’t think you mentioned it, but Peter Gabriel was the singer of Genesis (you remember from Firth of Fifth). So you;ve heard his voice before.

I saw this concert tour in Los Angeles, in 1993. It was the first time in my life that I felt, not lonely, but alone.
The concert DVD of this tour, called "Secret World Live", is one of the three greatest filmed concerts. The oldest, from 1975, was the farewll concert by The Band, the mostly Canadian outfit that recorded and toured with Bob Dylan in the 60s, when he went from pure Folk music to electric Rock. Their final concert had many famous guest musicians and was directed by a young Martin Scorsese.
Then in the early-mid 1980s, director Jonathan Demme ("Silence of the Lambs") filmed The Talking Heads at the zenith of their creativity and fame, in the brilliant concert movie, "Stop Making Sense". It feels like being there in person, and audience members of the film regularly danced in the aisles and on the stages in front of the movie screens.
1993's Peter Gabriel "Secret World Live" was staged and directed by a French-Canadian Avant Garde Theatre director, Robert Lepage. He had a role in the excellent mid-80s movie, "Jesus de Montreal", based on the Nikos Kasantzakis novel, "Christ Recrucified". Scorsese had made his "The Passion of the Christ" based on that Kasantzakis novel, and Peter Gabriel won many awards for his film score to this movie. If you watch this concert film, you will see that there was one round stage, as you noticed, but also a square stage, and they are connected by a motorized belt that transports the band members from the square, masculine stage to the round, feminine stage, like a cosmic river. Amazing creativity that reminds us why Peter Gabriel has been a legendary, almost mythological, live performer since his days singing for Genesis, from 1969 to 1975.
