@@SulkyKarris It has been a long, long time, but after Googling old D&D novels I _think_ it was probably "Darkwell," (1989), the third book in the Moonshae Trilogy by Douglas Niles.
The displacer beasts were beautifully depicted in the Honor Amongst Thieves movie.
