Denis you have some of the best tips on how to get everything to fit so nicely !!! The way you do the guard is perfect what a nice fit. Using the drill press to make that slot so perfect is great filing those out does take forever and doing it by hand can get off a bit. Love the Christmas part where we open that packages LOL. That apron is perfect with the place to add a mic what a great idea. I also do not like all the pockets on one. Too easy to get lazy and fill those pockets with tools then have to lean back against the weight !!! That is a beautiful handle material can't wait to see this one finished. Spent last week making guards for 6 knives Watching internet about making guards Life is suffering! Actually I like your channel-stamping thing, its much nicer than mine which is just a block of wood with a slot chopped in it :) The other go to for guards at least for me is carbide and diamond burrs for the dremel to do most of the removing + with your square needle files, I found making two sides 'safe' with no teeth on them helps to avoid chewing into the lateral sides of the hole with a bit of inadvertent frenzied filing.
I didn't mention the burrs because they can get away from you sooo easily. One slip and BAM, you're redoing your guard. Certainly they can be used if your super careful. Thanks for watching, Kris!
For those of you using any air hardening steel your tang will be just as hard as the blade so it may be difficult to drill with a normal bit. Amazon sells tungsten carbide bits that will cut right through the hardened steel. They're about $35 but well worth it.

I'm probably going to build along to this build series when I get some time on my next break. I've got a benchtop mill so I might have a slightly easier time slotting it but ultimately the filework still matters. Personally I'd recommend micrometers for this kind of work but tbh calipers would probably work fine since it's filework.
Micrometers would work (if you can measure the slot easily enough) but you really don't need that kind of accuracy. Calipers are just fine. Thanks for following along!
Have you ever tried draw boring the pin into the knife? Draw boring is an intentional misalignment of the hole for the pin into the Tang of the knife such that when you drive the pin in it would force the handle tight into the guard.

Hey Denis. Thanks for another great video! I have 2 unrelated questions for you. 1) Do you ever do burn fittinga (not sure if that's the right term) for handles? I've seen the technique done a lot in Forged in Fire but you and other TH-camrs that do blacksmithing/bladesmithing don't ever really do it and I'm wondering why that is. 2) How do you deal with the waste your shop produces? Saw dust from wood is pretty straightforward, but I was wondering what the appropriate or best way of getting rid of all the metal dust as well as dust from other handle materials like micarta or what not, especially that sometimes/often I see folks grind metal with a water bucket beneath the belt sander to catch the dusk or something. Thanks in advance! Keep up the great work!
Some great questions. 1) A "full" burn in is a bad idea as it makes the handle material brittle. That's where you start with barely a hole and have a red-hot tang and literally burn the wood as you push it in and it creates a ton of smoke. What I HAVE done is after its completely drilled and shaped and I'm in the mode of getting the last material out of the hole so it fits, I've heated the tang so it slides in and makes a tight fit. I do that a lot. It's not really a full "burn in" like I've seen on FiF though. I also usually scrape out the burn stuff so the epoxy is on solid wood. 2) things like sandpaper, and material that would be considered recyclable would go there. Metal dust and such goes into the green bit. It's all decomposable and can be treated like that. It'll just return to the earth and become iron for someone else some day! 😜. “Decarb” or decarburization occurs when heat applied to a piece of steel burns the carbon out of it, thus reducing its hardenability in that area. You usually have to grind through that to expose “good” steel. It’s not migrating but it’s burned out usually. There’s still other events there so it’s not pure iron, just closer to mild steel. Yup, good point. I usually just torch them to soften the tangs and drill slowly with lube so they don’t air harden again. 👍
