    I own a RV-10 with 2 Dynon displays with dual AHRS and a GTN650. As a backup I use a GRT Mini X which is completely independent and has its own AHRS. It is a PFD, Map display and provides a 3° glide slope to any runway !!!

    Adam, thanks for doing this. YOU and your Dad are a great resource for home builder. One question, does the sample panel in this video have an IFR navigator in it somewhere?

      Thank you for watching. No, our display is VFR, since we have to purchase the items in our display we couldn’t justify an IFR navigator.

    what are the trade-offs for adding a secondary ADAHRS vs installing the G5

    • @MidwestPanels
      @MidwestPanels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In a dual-display system, there’s not a whole lot of difference in the system, other than the G5 being totally standalone if need be. In a single-display system, a second ADAHRS won’t cut it as a backup as a failure of a single display leaves you in the same boat as an AHRS failure. In that case, a G5 would be better than a second GSU 25.

    My RV-10 has a G3X PFD & MFD as well as a G5. Being IFR my aircraft is equiped with a 20amp B&C backup alternator & 6ah TCW Ibbs.
    At present with my Master switch off & the avionics running on the 6ah battery my VPX-Pro is off line.
    It leaves me with only the PFD running. No coms, no transponder, no AP, no trim or flap indication….
    Is it feasible/ reasonable to have the VPX also able to be powered off the TCW? I could then continue to use it for controlled load shedding.
    Maybe have a panel circuit breaker for the VPX so that it could be pulled as a last resort.
    However I would still have the G5 as a last last resort!

    I want to have two 10 inch displays in order to tech my kids as we go cross country. Two G3X’s would fulfill the primary and backup attitude source, correct? Is there a cheaper or better way to have two ADHRS sources AND two 10 inch displays? Thanks

    • @MidwestPanels
      @MidwestPanels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you would still need 2 AHRS sources as they are independent.

      I don't know what you'll be flying, but how about going with 7" displays or a 10" on the left and a 7" on the right?

    What IFR backup does Dynon use/recommend?

  • @LISRAREF

    Does the G5 AHRS check it’s finding vs the G3X and advise of a mismatch or are they independent unless one fails?

    • @MidwestPanels
      @MidwestPanels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it will check against the G3X, you will get an error “AHRS Miscomp’

      In all seriousness though - look at the points of failure you would have and protect yourself to a reasonable level. Just my $0.02 worth. :) And always - a good and well thought out video from Midwest. :)

    If I have dual 10" G3X displays, does, or can one monitor act as a backup without having a G5 taking up real estate?

    • @MidwestPanels

      Only if you install a second ADAHRS.

    If I get dual g3x , do I still need a g5 ?? Would a g5 be a third backup ?

    • @MidwestPanels
      @MidwestPanels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unless you install a second AHRS it would be wise to have the G5 as it becomes your backup for AHRS information.

      @@sbyoung1976 you are correct and that would be a reasonable option, we just like the stand alone nature of the G5.

      @@MidwestPanels In the 2 second AHRS scenario, would the AHRS information compared and would you be able to reassign one of the AHRS source to the PIC display? That too me seems like a better option... :-)

    • @MidwestPanels
      @MidwestPanels  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fdelacou Yes with 2 AHRS, either will feed information to the system and is an option for sure. The beauty of the G5 is that its totally independent unit with its own 4 hour battery and in the event of a PFD failure, if properly placed would be more in the pilot view and easier to fly an approach with than trying to fly with the second screen being on the other side. This is why we like to place the G5 at the top of the panel, it puts it more in the field of view. This of course is just our preference and is certainly not to only way to do it. If someone wanted to eliminate the G5 and install a second AHRS there would be adequate redundancy, I would however be sure to have backup power to the second AHRS and practice using only the right screen in the event you had to rely on it,.
