  • Flag and pennant meanings are described in Pub 102 which is available here msi.nga.mil/Publications/ICOS
Generally speaking, Full Dress Ship flags are arranged in a certain order according to NTP 13B, and the order does not translate into anything particular.
Civilian vessels are not held to this standard and my arrange the flags in other order.
Regardless of Full Dress guidance, Pub 102 is a great resource for your professional library and covers single, double, and triple flag hoists, as well as a variety of other good things to know such as visual and sound signaling.

Love this channel! Full of great information we use quite often. (And yes. we use "full dress ship" on our vessel for special occasions.)

In the cased you showd, it was ship dressed overall. However thes flags are signal flags. And do have meanings. Like refueling ship, ship at achor. However some flags are diffwrent not always the same.

Very clear explanation. I'm interested in using these flags as a deer deterrent. Anyone ever try this? I know if they're really hungry, they're coming in--flag or no flag--but a string of uniquely shaped and colored flags just beyond my neighbor's fence might keep them from jumping. The videos on 3-dimensional deer fencing recommend using fishing line, but I think a visual indicator might work better. I think this because the other night our doe crashed through 7' deer netting that she didn't know was there. She's a city girl, this doe of ours. She'll eat pears with security lighting right in front of her face, with a radio blaring next to her as she finishes her meal. In other words, she's used to us, and a string of flags as a deterrent might just be wishful thinking. Still, they're pretty, and worth a try...

When "full dressing" a private vessel, it is not necessary to use the order ABC1, DEF2, GHI3 etc. However, one should make sure the flags do not make any offending messages or words in any language. (this is why the ABC1... is a always a safe option).
It is good seamanship not to include flags that look like national flags. Those are T (Tango), which looks like the French national flag, and X (Xray), which looks like the Finnish national flag.

I have no doubt that the order of flags came about after a change of command ceremony and some sailor hid a joke about the outgoing captain’s wife in the flags.
