  • Noises are an essential part of 3D rendering. But without a way to scale and manipulate the noise, they are not very useful. This video covers how to scale noises in Karma XPU and MaterialX in Houdini 19.5

    Another very useful tipp! Thanks so much. Giving Karma XPU another shot right now, and it's actually really worth it.

    Thank you, you are always helping.
    I checked this and the effects you can achieve are good : )

    Thanks for this clear description of the noise scale and translations. Follow up question. Do you know how to animate the translation(add) parameter add an animated offset. I tried bringing in an animated attribute but it doesn't seem to respect the time dependent value at the vop level. Any thoughts?

      I'll post a follow up video to show this I suppose but you can promote the parameter and then animate the value using an edit lop.

      @@InsideTheMindSpace Great! Thanks much. I did just discover that there is a mtlxTime and mtlxFrame node that works directly in the shaders.

      Ah. Well that works too I suppose. I didnt realize those were nodes. I will include that as well then. Thank you!

    thanks for this, this sent me the right direction! houdini = easy stuff made hard, hard stuff made easy =)

      Glad it helped and to be fair this is just mtlx that is making things harder than they should be. Houdini isn't all to blame this time

      thank you, completely new here... Karma forces me to use mtlX though, correct? @@InsideTheMindSpace

    Excellent video, thank you. I am having and issue with creating a repeated ramp, using this method. the position into multiply means that only half the sphere gets the ramp. The add can offset but cannot do a loop. I am trying to get scrolling lines. So my idea was to create a color ramp with multiple entries, then use the add to offset and animate in a loop. If I put the position into input 1 and 2 I lose the scaling ability. Any ideas?

      use modulo for repeating patterns

    Regarding Karma XPU, I found that when connecting mtlxnormalmap with noise, normal cannot be recognized correctly. Have you encountered such a problem?

    • @InsideTheMindSpace
      @InsideTheMindSpace  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to connect to a height to normal and then to a mtlxnormalmap. You will also need to be using a float ramp for the input if you are connecting your noise to a ramp first

      @@InsideTheMindSpace I forgot "Height", just got in touch with karma and was stuck with this problem all day yesterday, thank you so much !

    Note sure why, but for many of your videos, I can't add them to a playlist (there's no ... button) below the video. Maybe a setting on the video?

    • @InsideTheMindSpace
      @InsideTheMindSpace  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not sure. I dont think I have any setting turned on that stops them from being added to playlists. I'll look into it though

  • @aeko

    Could you not just create an HDA with the position, etc setup?

    • @InsideTheMindSpace
      @InsideTheMindSpace  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah you probably can. Haven't tried it but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to

    Useful.. but come on, scaling noises is so common, give me a slider SideFX !

    • @InsideTheMindSpace
      @InsideTheMindSpace  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Its not really a sidefx thing with mtlx. Mtlx is its own thing that has its own approval process and such. Sidefx has just implemented it so they can only do so much. The more houdini specific mtlx nodes they make even if it makes things easier in Houdini makes it so the networks don't transfer to other apps.

      The noises in mtlx are very limited right now in Houdini. Hopefully we will get more and better noises in H20
