Can we all take a moment to apreciate the mastery behind this scene? The one-shot walk and talk, the set, the dialogue, characters are very organic and idiosyncratic, amazing writting and execution !
Sam: CJ! CJ: Oh, Holy Interruptus, Batman. Sam: Grant Samuels died. CJ: Really? Sam: Yes. CJ: He's really dead this time? Sam: Yeah. CJ: 'Cause last time you told me he was dead he wasn't. Sam: He's really dead this time. CJ: Somebody poked him a little to see-- Sam: He died, CJ! CJ: Well, okay, then I shouldn't have made a joke. Sam: I'm almost certain he's dead. CJ: Sam! Sam: I was making a joke too! What, you work alone?
Fact Checking Toby re: CPI- BLS started tracking CPI in 1919. '53 was considered the second comprehensive revision of CPI. But everything else discussed would make Toby and CJ's HS Econ teachers proud.
The two-set-ed stage was built in season 1, but they were rebuilt and joined into one whole complete set during the hiatus between season 1 and 2. This is in fact a one-shot scene.
@JillyX It's kind of a trademark of The West Wing. Sorkin loves the "Walk and Talk". It's more interesting than the "Stop and Chat", although that happens too. Usually at the height of an emotional scene, like when Sam is yelling at Donna about Black Water and high treason.
Totally. Reminds me of the long steadicam shot in Magnolia where Stanley Specter and his father are arriving at the What Do Kids Know studio. It takes you from the parking lot all the way to the game show set.
@JillyX Actually there's a cut at 2:17 disguised by someone passing in front of the camera, but it's really well hidden. I read somewhere the press room set was on a different stage than the main office set.
The geek in me marvels at the precision and timing of what I am going to assume is one long take. I think back to when Marlon Brando demanded the equivalent of the GDP of a small third world country to deliver a few minutes of dialogue at the opening of the first Christopher Reeve Superman movie and had to use cue cards to do it. Brando could have been in this West Wing episode. He could play Congressman Samuels.
Yes - everyone should watch that clip -very very funny and love The West Wing as I do it ( the parody) WAS spot on - love the bit where they actually knock the President over!

"Is it comprehensive?" is my single favourite West Wing line.
Man, Leo is brutal at the end. Gotta love it when friends are so close they loop back to dropping lines like that.
CJ: Somebody poked him a little to see--
Sam: He died, CJ!
CJ: Well, okay, then I shouldn't have made a joke.
Sam: I'm almost certain he's dead.
CJ: Sam!
Sam: I was making a joke too! What, you work alone?
isn't that one of the greatest walk and talk exchanges in the whole series? Scrub that - in the whole span of human existence? Just saying...
the theory of everything?is it comprehensive?
love cj!!
"I'm almost certain he's dead."
"Sam!"
"I was making a joke too! What, you work alone?"
Such a wonderfully quotable show.
Did someone poke him a little to see?
@@annemariealmond5992 "HE DIED, CJ!"
I heard that"
Yeh I understand how a speaker phone works !" Brilliant script and perfectly delivered by the two actors !
"How did that bullet not kill you?"
"Just lucky I guess."
"Yeah."
Rewatching the West Wing and am halfway through the sixth series.Watching these clips makes me depressed about how good the show was.

Holy interuptus, Batman!
LOVE THIS SHOW
lol
"Ahhh, the grand unified theory."
"Do you know anything about it?"
"No."
"Okay."
::parts ways::
There's a subtle but noticeable cut when C.J. enters the press room, which was on a seperate set. The rest of the West Wing was one set.

The walk and talk is one take but the press room is cut in, notice the blackout when CJ crosses into the briefing room and the cut between takes.

Psychics at caltech...yeah, I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be physicists...
ROTFLMFAO!!
They would be much more efficient physicists if they were also psychic.
I think Charlie knows one out in Santa Barbara
"Somebody poked him a little?" Cracks me up everytime.
Bam!!! Bam!!! Bam!!! Bam!!! Bam!!! Bam!!! Bam!!! Bam!!!

"how did that bullet not kill you"
oh please you'd cry your eyes out leo!
Gotta love the wit of this show.
I still say she did that to mess with him.
The second time, almost certainly. The first time, I'd have no problem believing was unintentional
NOOOOO! REALLY? /s
“If it were psychics I’d lead with it”
She said 'yes mam' when toby said cj?
Yes - everyone should watch that clip -very very funny and love The West Wing as I do it ( the parody) WAS spot on - love the bit where they actually knock the President over!
C.J. said 'psychics' to mess with Josh.
Yep, one shot. "Talk & walk". Indeed amazing.
@JillyX They had to do it in multiple shots. IIRC it goes over two sets.
Now that’s a walk ‘n talk!!!
This is West Wing distilled into 3 minutes.
Head banger scene. That poor bed panel. Physicists! Not psychics! Le Monde - not La Monde.
She totally did that on purpose.
The big bang theory used the same joke, confusing physicists with pyschics... or was it astrologers with astrologists.....
Does Jen have to go thru this every morning?
Probably worse with social media.
i know. it's just like this episode :P
How did that bullet not kill you?
Watch the MADTV parody of West Wing! So funny
" just lucky i guess." lol
